After weeks of planning, waiting, scouring, four-step protein mordanting, and dye extraction, the first batches of our kid’s summer market project are in production. Want to guess the (botanical) dye source?

The first ever Apple Store in Malaysia is quite a unique design. Like someone took one of those shadow and gradient design exercises and made it come to life.

That roof will be a vibe when it rains and monsoons in Malaysia. I’m curious whether it was designed with that in mind: the rain will just pour down from each layer like a fountain?

nazhamid,
@nazhamid@mastodon.social avatar

That roof is definitely a cool feature, and the branding with the layers is very different than what I've seen Apple do. They even have wallpapers for your iPhone, and Mac to go with it.

Corporate greed looks like:

There’s a wonderful co-op grocery in SF called Rainbow (even if you don’t geek out over food, especially quality food, it’s worth a visit - the bulk section alone is impressive).

We shop there a lot. They sell items for less (and sometimes by a large amount) than Whole Foods or other chain places do that you would assume have scale and purchasing power.

Rainbow is a single business and again, a worker-owned co-op.

Now why is that? $$$$$

In mid-April, I did my first trail race in Moab, Utah. The Amasa 25K (15.5 miles) with 2,400 feet elevation gain and loss, and with a section that isn't even a trail.

I wrote about it:

The startup I lead all design for is looking for near-term engineering help, and/or a founding engineer/Head of Engineering.

Ping if you have questions!

It’s funny? remarkable? strange? at how much design and strategy work I’ve done in the past 8 or so years that I can’t show publicly because of the confidential or early-stage nature of my work now.

Granted there was a lot of work when Weightshift was a practicing studio that we couldn’t show either, but it’s something I’ve observed.

There seems to be more gained knowledge to share somehow but I’m weighing how I might do that.

Wait, is this a LinkedIn post?

A number of overlanding creators will be launching exclusive series on the XOverland Network, which is a Netflix-like play. Curious how much they’ll be paid and whether it’ll be worth it versus “owning” (YT tho’) their own content. If XOverland Network was a proven platform like Netflix, it’d make sense, but I feel as if some of the creators have followings that won’t make the jump.

I.e. Do I need another subscription? I would rather support directly via Patreon (which I do).

@alabut These creators all have Patreons for the most part (the ones I already support and enjoy). I’m just curious whether belonging to this network brings them more cash flow to make series, or stability, because they have large followings already so I don’t think being part of the network for exposure is the reason.

Maybe the Patreons aren’t enough either, so I’m curious how much of a $8.99/month split between some 20 creators (so far) will go. Dead curious about the revenue share.

Ugh, rest in sound, Steve Albini. What a legend, a person with real ethic and principles.

Proof of how lazy humans truly are: the turn signals in your vehicle are literally at your fingertips but drivers rarely use them. I find myself applauding when someone actually does it.

95% of drivers would probably fail their tests if taken today.

Hot take: I ran a 25K (and most of my runs, and before that, some rides [cycling]) in a cotton top.

This trip has had some super highs and some lows, and really, @jenschuetz and I haven’t been able to find time to devote to Weightshifting. I feel bad, but at the same time, giving myself to feeling and experiencing all of the things.

I know artists and creators of all kinds love documenting, but at this inflection point, and maybe because 40s, I feel there are very few moments that I want to document. Moments that are truly special, perhaps, and maybe only for those that were there.

Not apologizing for the Ai Pin, but reading a take with a comparison that puts it into the same company as Juicero (a ridiculous start-up and device that literally just squeezed bags of already pureed fruit and vegetables) is a stretch. Nothing should be compared to Juicero unless it’s your own hands (which probably can do a better job).

With newsletter software issues, and realizing that you should own your stack anyway, here’s S3E1 of the delayed Weightshifting on my site.

Having a heck of a time with Buttondown working and the editor completely flaking out. Thus a delay on Weightshifting — I’d have published this to my site in minutes compared to the hours I’ve been trying to get Buttondown to work or send a properly formatted email.

Just another reason to own your stack, and begs the question: do I bother with the email/newsletter? Just publish to the site and maybe have Buttondown pick it up from an RSS feed (which seems like a more reasonable direction)?

nazhamid,
@nazhamid@mastodon.social avatar

@Luke I am leaning towards or rather, have come to the opinion that the content should be canonized first on my site then published outwards in a variety of forms. RSS-to-mailing list sounds like the way I want to go.

Season 3 of Weightshifting, the newsletter @jenschuetz and I publish will begin this weekend as we embark on a 2-3 week trip living out of our rig en route to Moab, Utah.

There, we’re both running our first trail races in the backcountry.

@nazhamid question about your blog: I could’ve sworn I saw at least one post with an auto-playing silent video that didn’t have the usual embedded crap, but I can’t seem to find it. Am I imagining things? I went through your archives hoping to peek under the hood at the html and try to emulate it.

I haven’t read the books yet, nor watched the Chinese adaptation, but Netflix’s 3-Body Problem (after episode 4) feels surprisingly low-budget, with caricatured characters, and a general blandness.

I found out that it was made for $160M and had to ask where all the money was used. Looks cheaper than The Mandalorian which doesn’t even use real sets.

nazhamid,
@nazhamid@mastodon.social avatar

@alabut I'd read about the similarity of it being "unfilmable" a la Dune, so I'm curious how much it's deviated (I know the cast of characters in the UK don't exist outside of Da Shi, etc.) and that some of the book relies on Chinese Culture to convey aspects.

📖 I’ve been reading an amazing science fantasy series called The Steerswoman by @rkirstein and I absolutely love it.

It has it all: a rich and well-drawn world, science debating magic, dense and fallible characters, and a slowburn mystery that keeps zooming in only to pull back and reveal some new wider layer.

Seriously stunned that I hadn’t heard of these books and want to get the word out to more readers. They deserve a huge audience!

(thanks for the rec @beep!)

@jasonsantamaria @rkirstein @beep On book two now and it just keeps on going in the best way. I know a book is great when I’m sneaking time in to read at any opportunity.
