@msh@puzzled maybe. I did hear that after the main under McKnight burst in 2004 that there was a big push and Calgary was fairly pro-active in monitoring.
No one wants to pay for maintenance - you spend money and don't get to cut any ribbons or fundraise off those projects.
But as those old Fram oil filter commercials said: you can pay now, or you can pay later.
So the main plot was a bunch of scientists made it snow on a tropical island and oh there were some kaiju fighting too I guess then the scientists effed off into the sea
WTF I dunno
THE END
At least #Smolzilla and Rako and her reporter sidekick who may or may not be a man were cute
So this year marks the 25th anniversary of my first email server going online, and I have been running it continuously ever since (seriously I still have "Happy new year the world didn't implode" emails from 2000 in my email folders)
Nonetheless I still get this mildly dreadful feeling I have been doing it wrong this whole time. As such I have decided to go to https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/mwlucas/run-your-own-mail-server and make a modest pledge in exchange for Sage Advice and instruction from @mwl on running your own email server in the form of a DRM free e-book.
I have always been bemused by the irrational fear many Very Smart People have regarding self hosted email. By no means is it easy to set up but maintaining it isn't THAT hard. I have also hosted a Mastodon/Hometown instance for 7 years and I out more work into that, and that same crowd hasn't developed a phobia towards elephants. The propaganda against self hosted email is very strong!
I encourage all efforts to wrest control of email back from Google and Microsoft!
@msh@mwl Nice! I've self-hosted Exchange server for many years and started self-hosting a much cheaper Postfix/Dovecot server last year (which is a completely different animal!) There are so many different ways to make your own mail server! Still learning lots and probably doing something wrong, but here are my notes in the context of the cheap one I made for DeltaChat use: https://bookofadamz.com/how-to-make-your-own-whatsapp-signal-telegram-competitor/
#YYC has very long very well lit runways which makes for difficult #aurora viewing from my back yard so it is pretty strong to be viewable in these conditions
#RexMurphy always heavily spiced his takes, and especially in the last 5 years of his life veered off into the ideological weeds. That said even his strongest detractors must admit that his way with words and manner of speech were mesmerizing. #RIP
The shitmongers running Google and Big Tech in general are the actors directly responsible for the decline of the internet in the name of growth and profit, as well as the side effects this has had on society in general, but the root cause is that these psychopaths are rewarded handsomely by investors for their toxic behaviour.
This is why I would never work for a publicly traded company again. I did once and realised that even if I wanted to that I would eventually be laid off in a round of job cuts (again) or fired due to being unmanageable or some such thing.
@newt the irony is not lost on me. Opening this link on my #PinePhone quickly turned the poor old fondleslab into a hand warmer and drained like 10% of the battery in the time it took to read it.
Google did this. Google did all of this, and yes the linked website is complicit in it.
And if you follow the stock price of #Alphabet lately you can see investors continue to reward them more than ever.
