I can totally get behind featuring The Secret of Monkey Island on the cover of the May 1991 issue of Italian K Magazine, but man that is not an attractive cover at all.
Also Sim Earth is ready for my nightmares

@damianogerli Was it normal for this magazine to use in-game graphics for its cover? Most used other artwork at the time.

I played through the opening act of Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis (until finding the Lost Dialogue).

What I liked:

  • Playable credits
  • The irony of the book having been in Barnett College all along after travelling through half the world
  • Really evil nazi antagonists

I wonder if anyone has ever completed #Antheads , aka #ItCameFromTheDesert II. I for sure never did, although I love the original game and although I have Antheads standing on my shelf.

#Humongous games finished (several times), my daughter asked for more games like this. I picked a couple of adventure games not too hard. Based on box, she picked #MonkeyIsland. Playing on family TV with @scummvm . I read all the text to her, she's not yet fast enough herself. When shopkeeper said he won't lead us the way, she said: "Let's just follow the guy" Swordfighting, no problem either. Need to push her to talk to people, she doesn't like that much. @grumpygamer

We got ourselves the for Christmas, European edition. Recommendation is 8+. Was fine for our six-year-old, she loved it. "Junior" variant exists which is 6+. I don't understand the purpose. In spite of longer route planning required, in spite of extra rules for tunnels, ferries, stations, the regular one can easily be played at younger age. Unless the kids have no patience for 60-90 minutes.

One of the most beloved games on the #C64, #Wizball 's specialty was cooperative multiplayer. Something not all that often found in games of the time. Or even today, for that matter. Which is too bad, isn't it? Why always this focus on competition?

Beginning of the year, I asked here: can I use a #RaspberryPi 5 as my primary desktop machine? After encouraging responses, I went for it. Here are my experiences after three months of usage. It will be a thread, but goes a bit beyond the usual "how do the initial installation and setup".

The new decade, the 1990s, brought along a huge shift in computer gaming. #Supremacy illustrates how everything suddenly tried to open up to the emerging mass market, to appeal to audiences which would not have touched a strategic wargame with a ten-foot pole in the previous decade.

#Stronghold, unfortunately not a big commercial success, marked #DonDaglow's return to the god genre which he single-handedly created back on the Intellivision. Just that nobody noticed at the time. The 1990s sucked. Really nice game, though!

#PsychicDetective - a #FMV game I truly like! Not in a "so bad it's good" way. The plot is a strong dime novel. The acting is fine. The core gameplay is much more interactive than it appears at first. There are subtle, but significant ways to influence the plot, not just watch different scenes. Proof that this medium could work if done right.

It was time to face one of my childhood traumas. No, not my horrible school days, but rather a lie I've carried with me since then. Everyone said, at the time, that #TeacherBusters was the greatest thing invented since ice cream. But I didn't even know the game! Though how could I admit that without being stamped a total loser by my nerd friends? Well, here I am, just 35 years later, making amends.

This picture left a strong impression on me as a child. It all seemed to be there. The impressive guard figure, looming above us due to the choice of perspective. And then, in the background, a sketchy, but alluring promise of what would await us if we managed to get past that guy. It all seemed perfect. But, of course, memories may be misleading. So let us enter the #CityOfThieves together.

You know what I dislike just as strongly as people dismissing anything "old" as automatically bad? Elitist retro-ists treating all kinds of later developments the same way. For instance, there are tons of people claiming "all #FMV games are crap". The presentation of things does not make or break a game. In each format, gems can be found. "Gem" probably doesn't describe #TheDameWasLoaded, but it is quite a decent game nevertheless.

Bought the . It is essentially a monster & loot simulator like classic (simplified) D&D. Seems fun, though of course highly dependent on luck. A good roll early on gives you a +3 axe, and you'll breeze through the rest of the game. Also, the Seer character has significant advantages as far as I can see so far. Well, no big deal. It's adventurous, highly replayable and kid-approved.

@mr_creosote Hey, I thought I was on the Good Old Days Discord, but I can't find it anymore in my server list.

I'd rejoin, but maybe I'd rather join the IRC channel actually. Where can I find that one?

mr_creosote,
@mr_creosote@dosgame.club avatar

@Tijn Closed it some years ago. The thing with IRC was that it requires constant presence. The former moderator left us, and I didn't really want to start setting up bots again like in the 90s. Nobody was using it anymore, so I let it go. Now, it's just this Discord and a Matrix channel, both of which are bridged to work together. Not used by anyone, either, but they require no maintenance, so I keep them there.

Stuffy old men in suits taking decisions about our world's future from their ivory tower. #EarthCommand is painfully realistic, dealing with all those alarming issues of today's world. Just that it is from… 1993. Wait a minute, does this mean all this has been known for decades? Wouldn't this imply we could have done something to prevent where we are now? Unheard of! [sarcasm off]

Having just escaped from Deathtrap Dungeon, a well-deserved rest with our good friend Mungo seemed in order. Only that said Mungo immediately sends us on another seemingly hopeless adventure: defeating the Lizard King and freeing the enslaved humanoids from his grasp. At least he's coming along as well. Jeanne d'Arc, or Joan of Arc in English speaking countries, is my favourite title from the fairly obscure developer Chip. Clearly inspired by Defender of the Crown (minus being completely broken), I love how it opens up its options only after being crowned king of France. This is great design, not overwhelming newcomers at first and providing a motivational boost about one third in.

Time flies. #AGoldenWake is almost ten years old by now. For me, it's a recent acquisition. Being decoupled from any pressure to get something new "urgently" has its advantages. It takes a lot of pressure out of life. And it enables to simply buy on a whim when prices are down. Of course, this also leads to the infamous "piles of shame" these days. And a number of games in one's collection which honestly aren't very good.

The secret lab in Ace of Spades castle of #TheRiddleOfMasterLu . The place where 99.9% of all players of the game failed. I know I did in the 90s. It's a pity, because the rest of the game is actually really good! I was genuinly touched by the interaction with the travel agent collecting penguins for his son. I wonder why they put such an obviously completely unsolvable showstopper in there.

In the mid-1990s, the website of #SiliconCommanderGames was one of the first I visited. I adored their three games, all shareware. Of those, #proliferation was my favourite then, and it remained at that spot. Even though the other two seemed to receive more attention from the main developer himself. The old website is gone. All the more reason to make sure those games are not forgotten.
