I did my time on the vanguard left and had my share of conversations trying to tie the things people were feeling right now to revolutionary politics. So I'm giving this one on Red Lobster a B+.

Maybe "only through socialism can you have endless shrimp" can succeed where "Medicare for all" has failed. 🚩🍤 🦞☭

The War on the Woke Trumps the Truth for Many Heterodox Thinkers

@spacewizard It has been something to witness. A few of those folks have always been rightoid hacks, a few still honestly harbor progressive politics, and a bunch don't understand that they're just canaries in the reactionary turn coal mine. Oh, plus the portion that are just grifters. Always the grifters.

No idea what meat temperature has to do with staying away from Twitter and YouTube, but okay.

Al has been hitting a creative slump with her drawing. I've got this X-Pro3 that I've never been able to part with. We talked through her ideal "creative kickstart" setup:

  • Acros w/red filter
  • Max shadow/highlight tone
  • low sharp
  • low NR
  • manual focus mode (we'll get to that)

... and put the Funleader 18mm/f8, fixed focus pancake on it.

The Funleader is really fun. It just doesn't allow you to care.

Triaging AI tool requests before passing along to security/compliance.

Beginning to think the best way to handle this work will be to have each request roll to save against “IT guy is feeling arbitrarily oppositional."

Fail the roll, I'll just have a bot generate a gibberish decline reason.

Someone in a "non-technical" role once told me that developers were the most special “renaissance man" she could imagine existing, and I told her “they'll surprise you sometimes" and left it at that. https://cyberplace.social/@GossiTheDog/112489484020095267

Interesting, lengthy discussion of phones-vs-real-cameras/iPhone vs. Ricoh GR, raw vs. ProRaw vs. jpeg.

Maybe one of the few times I've seen someone unironically say "real camera" and not instantly feel my hackles go up, because he takes the time to outline what he thinks a camera is.

Probably still something in there to offend, because he also unironically talks about "reality" and capturing it, but there's a point in there worth considering.

Another review from the same person on the Olympus PEN-F, which I covet for no healthy reason.

(This person's crabbiness conforms to my crabbiness in a number of ways, and please do stick it out through the lengthy, crabby preamble for what I'd consider a model of how to review a camera.)

@cimmanon They're surprisingly nice cameras. Very impressive what they managed to fit in that little form factor. I think the resulting tradeoff is in the battery life, because it uses tiny batteries to fit in the tiny body.

There's an optional optical viewfinder you can put in the hotshoe. Combined with the Snap Focus feature, it's a great street camera.

@lkanies Yeah, he does sort of allude to HDR a few times but doesn't dive in, does he?

Felt the same way about how much he was able to articulate of what I just sense now and then.

@tuban_muzuru I like his writing, too. "Unabashed" is a good way to put it.

Hey look it's another youtuber whom I never have to pay attention to again because of a take so dumb it broke my brain.

Take: "Firefox is dead! Its market share is low! Nobody uses it! For example, look at me -- I use Brave"

my brother in Christ, if you think its market share means Firefox is dead, I have bad news for you about Brave

which is, after all, just Chrome with an adblocker and cryptocurrency

@spacewizard There just is not that much to say, but apparently a bottomless supply of people who want to hear it.

It's the perverse and depressing realization of XKCD's Ten Thousand.

I decided to "mix it up" and change what distro and DE were on one of my machines, and everything I installed made me angry such that I ripped it out and installed something else that made me angrier. Tried to go back to the original arch but a glitch and a fuckup with the arch installer filled me with rage anew.

Right now it has Debian + XFCE, which I think is good, and I'm gonna leave it alone for now.

What a shitty Linux day. Should have left well enough alone.

@amerpie Thanks, Lou! I was pretty happy with the gas station one, just dialing my adjustments back and letting the colors be a little muted.

🩸 Went for my periodic checkup and learned my A1C dropped a good amount. Still not quite where I want it, but it validated my CGM readings over the past quarter and told me I'm on the right track with how I've been handling my diet.

@mph I'm looking at silverbullet.md, just out of curiosity. It seems kinda neat, in its own way. Looks like if there were no Tiddlywiki, here's something that could do a lot of the same things. I don't know that I'm thrilled about the interface? Like, TW is a web page. You know what a web page is and how to interact with it. Links, textareas, buttons. You know what's editable and what isn't. Silverbullet is a markdown editor running in your browser.

Sometimes, the by far best action is to force someone to quit.

Some of my favorite days as a manager were when people resigned. Not good. But still true.

@lkanies Whatever I was afraid of happening wasn't as bad as watching decent people resign themselves to the idea they were working somewhere it was okay to be that stunted (and that I personally might be okay with that).

Those of us who missed out on the first batch of X100VIs are probably in for a long wait. Maybe I should've waited a minute before selling the Q2.

@jbaty Any idea where the cutline is? Did you need to be "finger poised over preorder button" the day of the announcement? (Pre-ordered one, but maybe took a day or two to get around to it.)

    mph,
    @mph@social.lol avatar

@alans @jbaty 😭 I was resigned to probably having a wait in front of me because I dithered. I'd probably be more chill if every single Fujifilm supply chain story didn't involve "... because they look super cute." Oh well. Not like I'm stuck unable to take a picture, but with IBIS those things are Ultimate Travel Machines now.

It seems #Obsidian is not meant for files with long (see Denote) filename date prefixes so I should probably stop trying to shoehorn them in. They just get in the way. Darn.

@jbaty Front Matter Title will let you use the title: property to display file names. You can choose the context that happens in from a long list. Great for cleaning up the explorer in the sidebar and making your tabs more readable for day-to-day use, but sets you up for portability (or even dipping in and out from Emacs) for the long haul.
