I never got a Micro Four Thirds camera: My first mirrorless was a Fujifilm X100S, and my first mirrorless ILC was an X-T2. Before those it was Nikon and Pentax dSLRs.

Lately YouTube has been serving me up a lot of stuff around bargain digital cameras from 6-10 years ago and the whole M43 ecosystem looks fascinating. The little street rigs people make seem pretty cool.

@spacewizard I keep seeing Panasonic Lumixes and then some Olympus PENs (but "inexpensive" isn't quite right, there).

@spacewizard Nice! I've been thinking about classes, myself.

@lkanies No, I get it. I had a side hustle getting text out of databases. I know what I'm choosing here.

@lkanies Struggling with the idea it's "cynical." Maybe pessimistic? I've got no issue with people pushing back. I understand why they're disappointed.

I also don't think Gruber's inventing something when he says “Pro" is a semantically slippery designation in Apple parlance & I buy his “think what you want, but this is what they are" line of reasoning.

Even Gruber stripped of his raging brand identification might say the same thing. You see a lot less clever AppleScript from him these days.

@lkanies .... better than the worst way.

@lkanies I see. I thought you were characterizing my position, which is not "stop asking for more," "you're wrong," "you don't need it," &c.

My position is more like “I'd love Apple to loosen up a little here. Come get me when that changes. Meanwhile, the most useful consumer review will consider the device as inseparable from the OS it can actually run when you buy it."

While updating my subscriptions spreadsheet (a sorry state, needing one of those), I realized that I have several listed as "current", for which I'd paid for a year in advance, but don't intend to renew. Would you consider those "current" or paid for and done? I'm thinking the latter, because it moves my totals lower :).

mph,

@jbaty I do a quarterly steering committee on IT portfolio governance. My CFO loves me. AMA :-)

Overview: Columns for the trailing quarter + next 4
Green: Renewing/renewed
Yellow: Under consideration for termination or replacement
Red: Terminating
Strikeout: Terminated

No status: Unacceptable within 90 days of renewal

The Oregonian runs an article about a new Covid variant urging you to "stock up on masks."

It includes a few decontextualized data points, copies and pastes a few words from the CDC website about viruses, then urges you to set up a Prime account (twice) so it can push affiliate link mask-buying options.

The linked text “Now, some are considering whether masking up may be a safe option,” which you'd presume is at least information about masking, is an affiliate link, too.

lol omg. The "journalist" who wrote this piece for the O is the proud winner of the “2023 Commerce Award for Publishers."

What's wrong with a commerce awards, Mike?

It's “the sole industry awards program dedicated to celebrating excellence in commerce content," awarded by a company that makes affiliate marketing easier.

@spacewizard It is very annoying to me on so many levels. Just ... a disservice to people who are trying to weigh risk, a disservice to people who struggle to weigh risk, a disservice to, like, society. Because opinions are all over the fucking place and this just ... wow it is not helpful. Of all the things. I don't care if they want to hire a fake journalist to fake report about the best streaming service or ear wax removers. Fine. This is just dereliction of duty.

Solid review of the many shortcomings of ipadOS. I am not as heavy an iPad user as @viticci, but it’s been my favorite computer since it came out.

At this point, Apple needs to either dramatically increase the pace of change, or start knocking down walls and letting people do what they want without Apple’s help. The constraints of the system are becoming too burdensome.

@mihobu Thanks, Michael. I'm glad there's something there for you. It's rekindling my interest a little by adding some dimension that was missing for me by having all that flexibility.
