Blog: A few quick thoughts on the announced Netflix redesign.

It’s like the old saying goes, “There are only two ways to redesign streaming interfaces: moving top row navigation to side bars, and side bar navigation to top rows.”

EDIT: Thanks for the feedback. I'm trying out Plausible. No more feedback needed for now. Thanks!

I posted last year about getting off of Google Analytics for something simple, and not creepy. I got that but now I’m looking for another alternative again. $5/mo-ish. Let me know what you use.

The fun thing about the Menubar fiasco is it gives you an opportunity to go through and inventory all the permissions. Which is an absolute pain in the ass in Settings, but whatever.

Like I have software named after a person’s first and last name for Karabiner Elements, and networked storage. I’ve got software from Artel Software Corporation, which after some googling is apparently the company that made the BorisFX software that handles Mocha. None of it is doing something bad. OR IS IT

Bartender 5 was on the old version from December 5.0.49. It was last used March 8, and now its permissions are revoked and it's in the trash. I'm not really going to rush to install anything else at the moment. This MacBook Pro is so old it doesn't have a notch, so what a "win" for me.

People don’t tell you this writing trick, but the best way to catch grammatical errors and typos BEFORE you publish is AFTER you publish.

Disappointed The Verge, and Sean Hollister are platforming Palmer Luckey. Maybe the CEO of Raytheon will have a Game Gear emulator they’d like to hawk, or maybe another fascist weirdo will have a sick titanium Atari Lynx.

Blog Post: I'm bored with all the AI stuff so it's time for fan fiction. I try to make the case for an Apple Camera (and Apple Camera Pro).

What a curiously dispassionate post on The Verge about their parent company signing a deal with OpenAI. It’s interesting that they posted about it in a way that lumps it together with the other deals and there’s no statement from The Verge’s famously opinionated leadership about what this deal means for publishing, journalism, and the open web.

Blog post: YouTube Stops Screen Stealing On Apple TV

It's been more than 24 hours so no take-backs. Thanks to @glennf, again, for noticing the change.

I heard this from @glennf and just tested on an Apple TV with tvOS 17.4 and a 10 minute screensaver interval and no YouTube screensaver kicked in before Aerial at the 10 min mark. The YouTube app version is 4.22.01 so it doesn’t appear to have recently updated. Something server side, maybe? Can anyone else report back if they’re still seeing the YouTube screeensaver (reference: https://joe-steel.com/2024-04-12-YouTubes-Screen-Stealer.html)

My Eero seems to be kicking random devices off my network. Sometimes it’s only for a few seconds, and other times the affected device needs to be power cycled. Jason called me down from the office because it happened to the Apple TV. Had to restart it to get it back on the network. I know people like Eero because of how Apple-like it is but the most Apple-like thing about it is that it silently fails and doesn’t explain why.

People famously love to post to Instagram without reviewing the photos or videos or attaching mentions or stickers. Finally, the crushing burden of using Instagram with a smartphone has been lifted.

If you ever get the chance to have your Mac run out of disk space and RAM, but say it didn't run out of disk space and RAM, I highly recommend it. You see, the files are managed for you, so you don't have to worry, except when your desktop wallpaper breaks, and you can't quit or launch apps, but under the hood it definitely is taking care of things.

Yeah, one person at a desk with an AI slot machine to “create brand-aligned images”, video, as well as process all the conversions and analytics. What a dream, what a treat.

I tried to search through my old posts for how I format YouTube embeds for my blog, and it returned 0 results in Spotlight... which was weird. The top of the column view showed the files were online... but that's because's sorted by date modified, and everything below the fold was removed from disk by Dropbox+File Provider, and Spotlight doesn't keep an index of offline files, or warn you that it can't check offline files. It took longer to figure that out than it took to download the files.
