Seriously don't understand the folks persisting in participating in the de facto InfoWars group chat that is Twitter these days. Like, what is the rationale at this point?

jcn,

@jkottke People spent a lot of time building communities there that don't translate off-property as well as something like kottke.com does?

I can NOT get my ergonomics right. Standing desk, etc, but my neck is still totally janked.

I don’t get why Mastodon still makes it so hard to discover interesting people.

It should have an algorithm by default (but also make it easy to customize or turn off completely), that shows you stuff you might find interesting.

This would make it so much better especially for new users.

I like Bluesky’s approach with custom algorithms (everyone can publish them, e.g. I made astrophotography and retrocomputing ones).

Please do not reply with “use hashtags”, that is completely unrelated.

jcn,

@thomasfuchs @FinchHaven @extremelyuncanny Isn't that what relays are for?

Good morning from the world of "my importmaps weren't working in Firefox only so I moved them above another innocuous JS call and now they all mysteriously work."

This week was so exhausting. Now strategizing my weekend matzo brei plans.

jcn,

It’s happening.

@MagicLike You got the data you need mate? :blobcatgiggle:

I wanna put down the Stuxnet server 😮 perhaps use the domain for something else

jcn,

@stux you mostly use hetzner, right? I also have something hosted on the ARM instances at cloud.Oracle.com as an experiment and it seems pretty reasonable.

jcn,

@stux sure thing. Their intel instances are expensive but their ARM offerings in the free tier are generous.

I’ll probably regret asking, but what are people’s preferred gems these days?

I’ve used but hated . Have no opinions on . Really enjoyed but it seems like there’s a v1 rewrite happening which I am always suspicious of. I have been reading up on but since this is going to be a app I’m hesitant to jam into it. And does the answer change for an api-only app?

The answer is to suck it up and use devise isn’t it?

I have found that having a pothos plant is a great way to feel successful and accomplished with very little actual effort. They are almost impossible to kill, grow like crazy, and you can prune them to feel like you’re actually getting something done in your life. Thank you, little plant, for helping me through my day.

I just realized that #metatext doesn't have "trending" posts (only hashtags), which is unfortunate because it's so far been my favorite client.

Recently used a subselect as a join table and have found that writing complicated SQL still gives me a thrill to this day.

Anyone have an opinion about #photoshop replacements for MacOS? I don't use it enough to justify another annual subscription. Looking at #pixelmatorpro and #acorn and #affinityphoto but haven't actually tried any of them out yet. Will hopefully be checking out some of the trials this weekend.

Made #chaffles today. That is all.

jcn, to nyc

Putting on my #philanthropy hat, the #nyc chapter of the #AwesomeFoundation just funded Bronx Bound Books, a bookstore on wheels.

Did you know that the Bronx (population 1.5M people) only had one single #bookstore? This is ridiculous, so this month’s grantee is doing something about it by converting an old bus into a mobile bookstore. https://www.awesomefoundation.org/en/projects/205422-bronx-bound-books

jcn,

Also, if you like the idea of giving out $1,000 (or local equivalent) every month to an awesome project, talk to me about the #AwesomeFoundation. I’ve been doing this for over 10 years and we’ve collectively given out over $6M around the world in that time, $1,000 at a time.

Need to stop buying domains.

jcn, to random

@benbrown since you’ve been digging into this and since I’m lazy, does ActivityPub have the notion of “publish only” accounts that don’t have the option to respond to them?

jcn, to mastodon

Adventures in #mastodon admin: small instance with 3 users following no more than 100 users were consuming > 500MB of disk cache after running for a few hours. It’ll be interesting to see how this grows.

jcn,

Update: up to 1.1GB now.

jcn, to fediverse

Thus far the easiest service I’ve installed has been , followed by , and I wasn’t actually able to get (or any forks) to build properly. I’m really rooting for the @gotosocial team and am looking forward to seeing how it progresses.

jcn,

I think the issue with was just not really understanding the resources needed to build vs run, so it might be worth revisiting that or maybe, to experiment.

The weirdness of course being that you can’t really swap out backends easily since the federation basically locks other instances to this particular instance running -this particular software- which still confounds me.

jcn, to fediverse

I think an interesting byproduct of all this renewed interest in the #fediverse / #mastodon will be many more people realizing how much of the internet is just held together with duct tape, volunteer sysadmins, and crappy software running on un-backed up VPSes.

jcn, to fediverse

One thing I haven’t seen in the #fediverse is the ability to point webfinger on my own domain to a totally different host running the actual #mastodon or whatever server. It’d be nice to own my identity without having to run my own entire instance (i.e. like hosted gmail domains or how openid allowed delegation. Is this theoretically possible, even if not technically possible with today’s implementations?

jcn,

Following up on this, there appears to be interest, though not a lot of movement, in making something like this happen. https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/2668
