I have chicks!!! The plan was to get 2. Yadda, yadda, yadda… Now I have 4 baby chicks!!! Originally they were just going to be added to my roommate’s flock and they’d move out in a few weeks with her. Well, the chickens have given me so much joy I decided to get some for me to keep. The breeder had 4 left when we got there. I kind of wanted 3 but then I didn’t want that last little peep to be left alone so it came home with us too. I’m such a sucker. The new plan is for me to keep 3 and the other one can go with my roommate. We’ll see. I don’t think anyone will be surprised if I decide to keep all of them because again, sucker. Anyway, we have them set up in a plastic container with bedding, food and water and a heat lamp so they don’t get cold. They’re already about 2 weeks old so they’ll stay in the house for a couple weeks. I had 2 names ready to go but now I need a couple more. So far there’s Nugget and Noodle. I’m leaning toward sticking to the food theme. Dumpling? Drumstick? Taco? Waffles? So many choices. I’m holding off on naming them until they are a little more distinctive and I can tell them apart. Right now, they are all adorable little fluffy balls of joy and they all feel and sound the same to me. We also need to get past the point where we know with confidence that they are all females. If we do end up with a rooster, the breeder will take him back and give him a good home.

For ages now I've wanted to try using an Optacon. It's an ancient device that somehow displays tactile images on a matrix of vibrating pins using a camera.
I don't know if people used it here in the UK. It seems like most people I know of that did are from the US.
To me it seems like it could be an interesting thing to play with and that it could still have some practical uses. I've never seen one though, and there's probably a very good reason why it disappeared.

jaybird110127,

@KaraLG84 My mom has one, and yes, she still occasionally uses it, even though she has an OCR solution.

jaybird110127,

@KaraLG84 Nope. I couldn't read print to save my life.

@radio In the book Final Jeopardy, about the Watson match, Ken apparently said he thought he could have challenged it, but decided not to because he was so far ahead.

@radio If she were blind I'd say Talking Time 1.

@radio I don't want to listen to music through a speaker the size of a manual toothbrush, but neither do I want to have bass delivered by a woofer the size of a -ESS.

Do I need a ChatGPT plus subscription in order to generate and use API keys? I just canceled mine because the Internet bill is going up, and I was told that I could either get rid of something, or we could downgrade the Internet. I don’t want to downgrade the Internet.

jaybird110127,

@technocounselor Sorry for being so late in responding, but no you don't.

What are people using to read books on PC? Needing something that can at least read txt files and add bookmarks.

jaybird110127,

@spaciath QRead? Not sure if it's still purchaseable though.

I use a Python Markdown module that supports various extensions. The two I regularly use are nl2br (turns single line breaks into <br> tags, for use in poetry) and toc (creates a table of contents). Does anyone know of any other Markdown to HTML converters that support these extensions, or ones that do the same thing? Please boost for reach. Thanks.

Really disappointed to discover that Linode's control panel has undergone a pretty significant revamp, making the deploy page largely inaccessible to screen readers. The particular problem here is the selection dropdowns for region, operating system, and size. Linode once had the most accessible web control panel by far; now it's easily the least accessible. DigitalOcean and Vultr both have their issues, but they're at least usable, whereas I can't even get through the region selection on the new Linode. Stay away if you use a screen reader.

jaybird110127,

@munchkinbear @simon @quanin I'd just like to add that I deployed a Linode within the past thirty days with no problem. Didn't even last fifteen minutes, but it did get deployed.

@munchkinbear @simon @quanin Windows 10, Firefox, NVDA.

SURPRISE!

Don't expect anything spectacular or prepared, but @nick and Bob will be on air at 7 PM EDT, simply to talk, test things, and BS. Join them to see what that sounds like!

For those of you following the Nuked-SC55 emulation project, someone just managed to get Roland JV880 emulation going at least well enough to play built-in demo songs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wIe98lCJ5w8 @FluidEscence @x0 @BorrisInABox @datajake1999 @arfy

Mastodon quibble: Is it just me, or when someone completely changes their screen name and username, or migrates to a new instance along with changing screen/usernames, does anyone else wish there was some way to ask some service, "Who was this person before they changed things around?" Ficticious example: A user named "John Doe" with username johndoe@some.instance changes his screen name to "The Magnificent Piggywiggy" with username magpiggy@some.other.instance. In cases like this, I'd love a way to quickly be able to find out who this seemingly new person is. Presumably I'm already following them and am suddenly seeing posts with their new name in my home timeline.

It would be interesting to build an RVC model of a Braille 'n speak, but I don't have one that works anymore. It doesn't take much data to get a reasonable model, but if you want one that's actually small, I've ffound you need a few hours.

jaybird110127,

@Derek @bryansmart Wow I recognize DECtalk and the Speak 'n Spell, but who are the other two?

jaybird110127, to random

Question for Zoom H4 Essential users. So they say it does four tracks. Does that mean only that you can record from four sources at the same time, or can you do like you'd do in a traditional multi-track recorder program and, say, have a music track on the card, then add a vocal track to it, then put on another vocal track, etc. and end up with separate files per track? Also, is each track a mono file or a stereo file? Thanks for any info.

@jmd2000 One time when I was faced with that challenge, I found a loophole. There are a few links on that page to things like their privacy policy, terms of service, etc. Click on one of those. Then from there you should be able to hit the Sign in link.

I used Deemix GUI, and recently found that my copy isn't working anymore. I did about two minutes of research on this before deciding it wasn't worth the bother, and now I just use deemix from the terminal. You can pip install it, and then do something like
deemix -p music/deemix https://www.deezer.com/en/track/13111714

jaybird110127,

@simon Is the problem that you're not able to log in? If so, that is a known problem, and it apparently means Deezer changed something about their API or something. You now have to log in using your ARL, which is an access credential Deezer gives you when you log in using a browser, as a cookie. You have to log in with a browser, then use the development tools to find the ARL cookie from either deezer.com or www.deezer.com (forget which at the moment) then copy that value and put it into the ARL box in Deemix and log in that way.

does anyone know if there is a newer site for the NVDA comunity than the one I have? the NVDA addon store is a good thing, but I like to keep the file around for addons in case I need to reinstall NVDA. I don't want to have to search the store for the ones I want to use. I just want to install them, and go about my day. sadly the site I am using mothing is up to date at all. for example, I know unigram has been updated, however if I go to https://addons.nvda-project.org/addons/unigramPlus.en.html
this is the version I see.
UnigramPlus
• Author: Kostya Gladkiy (Ukrain)
• Download stable version (Compatible with NVDA 2021.2 to 2023.1).
if someone could help me out that would be greatly appreciated.

jaybird110127,

@JamminJerry @Bri @Jonathan Might be the wrong thread to ask this but…NAO keeps saying there's an update, and do I want to install it. I say Yes, it says it's downloading, then I never hear any more. Also, Addon Updater can be used to update addons…except when I try, it tells me it failed to download each available update, with no explanation as to why. Any thoughts?

jaybird110127,

@JamminJerry @Bri @Jonathan The IBMTTS I have will work in 2024.1 if you force enable it.

jaybird110127,

@Jonathan @JamminJerry Well! I just installed that addon, and tried to use it to update some addons, and got the following quite unhelpful error message: Something went wrong.
Check that you have an internet connection and try again.
You can now close this window.

jaybird110127,

@Jonathan @JamminJerry @Bri Yeah that works, but there are some that aren't in there, but are in the NVDA.es store.

It is a total shame that windows gives you an option to use safe mode with networking, but not safe mode with sound. In the cases of those of us who need it, safe mode should have a totally different title. That title is useless mode.

I have a report that Eloquence no longer works on the S24 running Android 14. I don't know whether Android 14 or the S24 is to blame. Whenever other phones get the update, it would be good to know whether it still runs on them. That's either really sad or just another strike against Samsung.

jaybird110127,

@simon @evilcookies98 Example attached. The first is at 240 words per minute, the second is at 480 words per minute and mumbles. The third is at 240 words per minute, but with samples per frame set to half of normal, for an effective speed of 480.

If you had a .me personal domain and a .net domain, and your primary domain was the .me, but people occasionally got confused because many still don't know .me is a thing in 2024, would you switch your email and blog-that-probably-will-never-happen over to the .net, or just keep the .me? Obviously this assumes the .me email can stay around and receive mail, and the domain can have a redirect. I don't have strong feelings on this either way, but I figured out the .net was available last year sometime, and have never been sure what I should do with it. I will probably make an email forwarder just in case, and then if I'm having a five minute argument with a Rogers representative I can just fall back to .net to shut them up.

jaybird110127,

@simon @JEkis Man I wish I'd known about that page a few weeks ago. I just got a $49 per year small plan.
