I want to find people who are into the intersection of Interface Design, Information Design, Graphic Design, Science Communication and Philosophy of Science, Philosophy of math, Philosophy of Education.

Basically designers and developers who are into creating visualizations, infographic of the scientific thinking process, theories for pedagogical purposes.

Collaborating with public housing developers to incorporate makerspaces into new affordable public/social or shared housing projects

Incorporating makerspaces into apartment buildings, bringing makerspaces to public housing development

"Makerhoods combines affordable living, shared spaces for light manufacturing, and business support to help people start and grow profitable businesses that create prosperity, secure their futures and create inter-generational wealth"

https://www.makerhoods.com/about-makerhoods

The Makerhoods model addresses these issues in a holistic way by providing housing, commercial space, and business development services in a supportive community all at one monthly cost. Housing The need for affordable housing continues to increase. By including mixed-income housing into the Makerhoods model: - The daily commute is eliminated. - Child care logistics are simplified. - Business owners and residents develop a sense of ownership and participation in the community. - Business owners have access to new and expanded social networks.

"In the twenty-first century, realizing that economics is totally fucked is a rite of passage for every serious intellectual. It’s more or less a precondition for doing anything actually interesting in the social sciences"

"When you really start digging on the web about this stuff, it will quickly become clear that—rather confusingly—some of the most violent critics of the economic profession are… other economists"

Constructing Embodied Algebra by Sketching by Nazmus Saquib, Rubaiat Habib Kazi, Li-yi Wei, Gloria Mark, Deb Roy

Basically ms paint for algebra

I came across this paper googling "feynman" "kill math" "bret victor"😅

Their innovation isn't really the drawing, illustrating part but rather the linking, dragging and dropping of each illustration which creates an algebraic expression

Nazmus Saquib - Embodied Math
https://nsaquib.org/blog/embodied-math

"My PhD dissertation creates a novel framework for Computer Algebra in which sketching & embodied interactions are main activities to generate & work with symbolic abstractions"

"My usual aim is to find the minimum number of primitives, brushes, and metaphors that capture different fields of mathematics. I assume sketching is the main activity by which embodied math can be done on top of the world (in mixed reality)"

Think if 3blue1Brown's Manim is used for making those explorable explanations for the textbook

@smallcircles

I love the open source ones yes but I also don't mind indie devs trying to make a living :D

For me anything other than FAANG-ish companies is fine

impactology,
@impactology@mastodon.social avatar

@smallcircles Agreed!

That's why I love the initiative of https://opencollective.com/

impactology,
@impactology@mastodon.social avatar

@smallcircles >but the making of it is.. umm, in need of reform.

Yes! What do you think about worker cooperatives (basically a model of an organization where employees are member owners, partners sharing profit apart from income and having equal say over decisions)

There's some tech coops https://tech-coops.xyz/

impactology,
@impactology@mastodon.social avatar

@smallcircles >. Imho this fragmentation is inhibiting to large extent the empowerment of these innovative approaches.

Oh how so?

impactology,
@impactology@mastodon.social avatar

@smallcircles

Maybe we need something like this

https://mastodon.social/@impactology/111975198560728175

A federation of Worker Cooperatives

There is an example of that in tech https://www.enspiral.com/

@impactology@mastodon.social avatar

@smallcircles Ah

Have you come across Cecosesola?

Cecosesola is a federation of 60 different worker-consumer cooperatives in Venezuela all run via horizontal management, not only are each of the cooperatives horizontal but even the federation is horizontal

There's a video on it by
my fav anarchist youtuber

Manifesto on the Teaching of Mathematics – Intellectual Mathematics by Viktor Blåsjö @viktorblasjo
https://intellectualmathematics.com/manifesto/

Intellectual Mathematics is written for the intellectual fulfilment of the reader.

Gosh this was the most relatable rant of math education, specifically math textbooks I've come across

He maintains a blog, has a podcast and also has written free textbook on calculus (that follows his unique pedagogy) and history of math

@hipsterelectron this community seems to be totally your jam Danny, check them out

Danny is a dear friend who was talking to me recently about modularity in software, I think he would really also love these principles of your community

impactology,
@impactology@mastodon.social avatar

@smallcircles @stephenpa @uclab_potsdam @khinsen

OMG Khinsen is a genius

This can be so useful for pedagogical purpose as well.

Imagine an open source project that uses these tools to create interactive documentation, exercises which guide you to recreate the whole project from scratch for design, dev students.

Every part of it serving as a pedagogical tool for people to deconstruct, tweak and reconstruct it

@smallcircles @stephenpa @uclab_potsdam @khinsen

So entire process right from research to conceptualisation & making of UI metaphors, widgets, affordances, patterns, taxonomies, navigation schemas and establishing their connection with social practices done completely in the open with documentation that’s also very modular.

So that anyone is able to recreate the application from scratch on their own and also be able to analyse and write their reflections on it.

impactology,

@smallcircles @stephenpa @uclab_potsdam @khinsen @tastapod

I will check that out, thanks!

I think every integrated development environment or scientific visualization, CAD, CAE engineering simulation software (for example ansys and comsol multiphysics) can actually serve as interactive textbooks.

Like they can serve as a model for teaching concepts instead of linear lectures and dry textbooks

This is going back to Bret's ideas :D https://worrydream.com/KillMath/
