With Slave Knight Gael dead, I guess this is the end of the second #DarkSouls3 DLC, it's time to check out that final boss!

Gael has been a challenging boss, but not as much as Nameless King or Sister Friede. The extremely open space of the battle arena makes it very easy to get away from the most punishing attacks, each movement is very clearly telegraphed and have enough reaction time, so it was very easy to read (not so much to dodge!) and super fun to play

I'm glad techbro trends only happen one by one, with new stuff only picking up once the previous bullshit has died.

Otherwise the internet would be full of guys trying to sell us NFTs of AI-generated images.

YES! I GOT HIM!!

I started Dark Souls 3, but it didn't feel fun to me for some reason. I switched to Yakuza: Like a Dragon instead, a game I've played earlier but abandoned half way through. I don't know why I did that. The game really seems like a blast this time around too. Also the cinematic bits at the beginning are loooonng.

hk,
@hk@mstdn.games avatar

@Sobtanian @riikka I was thinking about how would I rank the three DS games and, honestly, I'm not too sure. DS1 is awesome, but the second half is rough. DS2 is very cool too, but the bosses are a letdown. And DS3 doesn't feel as unique as the other two, for some reason I can't put my finger on.

But I wouldn't go as far as to say that it sucks!

@mforester @COMPU73E @riikka @Sobtanian Bloodborne > Dark Souls, regardless of the number.

@riikka @Sobtanian @scribblemacher @mforester @COMPU73E Deflect that BLOCKED!! 😁😁

Isshin is the best boss in any FromSoft game 🥰

@hk@mstdn.games avatar

@riikka @Sobtanian @scribblemacher @mforester @COMPU73E I'm more the opposite, boss battles are one of the things I always look forward too. I love exploration (I'm a huge metroidvania fan, after all!) but what really makes me tick is that rush of adrenaline of having a boss before me and being able to kick its ass 😅

I would also have loved fighting Malenia in Sekiro fashion!

Ok, I've thrown fists with the Nameless King a couple of times and it hasn't ended well for me. I'm getting the hang of the first phase, but I'm still getting pounded in the second one.

But the guy doesn't seem completely unmanageable. I just need to be patient and time my actions carefully. I've dealt with worse.

Yet another boss bites the dust in ! This time it's been the Twin Brothers.

All I can say is... I don't know how I managed to beat them. I did play poorly, I got too greedy too often, and received a lot of hits that could have been avoided. But I was careless. Still, I managed to inflict enough damage to get me to the end of the fight, and with that the last Lord of Cinder!

Next, time for optional areas and the two DLCs.

hk,
@hk@mstdn.games avatar

Looks like I've picked up quite a nice pace... The next two bosses from optional areas, Oceiros and Gundyr, are also beaten (first try for Oceiros, second for Gundyr).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ll3qw1eMhaU

Visiting what was beyond Gundry was... Interesting. And, at the same time, unsettling!

Considering everything I've read, I think this quick pace of killing bosse will probably grind down to a halt as I'm now headed towards Archdragon Peak.

@hk@mstdn.games avatar

@kaylee 😅😅😅

There were several "Could this be a secret?", "Try attacking", "Try rolling" messages behind the chest after Oceiros, it's the same way I found the Great Hollow in my DS1 playthrough

hk,
@hk@mstdn.games avatar

@kaylee I'm around level 90 in that fight, I'm going for a STR build that allows me to hit like a truck 🤣

And of course I'm wearing Havel's Ring so I can still roll decently while I wear a ton of armour

There is something incredibly beautiful in the world of gaming, and it's the community effort. As in, I downloaded Arx Fatalis the other day for my Steam Deck, and it works like shit. Transparencies don't work, textures and models look horrible and don't align properly, configuration options are limited.
But it turns out there is a fan effort called Arx Libertatis that reworks so much of the technical side of the game that, once installed, allows you to play without problems.

The emulation, modding, and homebrew scenes extend the lifespan of games and consoles so everyone can enjoy the games across generations, or get more out of the games they love.
Even while the companies leave the games to rot in a sewer, the community is there to keep it alive. It's just amazing.

And this is something that basically no other entertainment medium has. The closest I can think of is the fanfic scene.

@hk@mstdn.games avatar

When I was a teenager even I took part in a community effort to fan translate Planescape: Torment and Fallout 2 to Spanish, because the publishers hadn't even bothered to make an official localisation, and so many people had that as an absolute barrier to enjoying the game!

Just came back from watching Ghost in the Shell in IMAX. I still love the movie after all these years, and being able to watch it on the big screen (originally I watched it more then a dozen times from the VHS tape we had at home) has been such a treat 🥰

All right, Aldrich, Devourer of Gods is dead! As with many other FromSoft bosses, once you figure out the "trick", it's reasonably manageable.

For Aldrich the key turned out to be going full Leeroy Jenkins on it, dashing like mad towards the boss, maybe dodge one or two close-range hits, tank some damage, and punish before it teleports to the furthest corner of the room. Rinse and repeat... and here it is:

Blow me, kobo have announced colour e-readers, finally.

BUT! I tried one from a different company earlier this year and it sucked. So I’m not sure how this will be different.

BUT! I love kobo and their devices are amazing so maybe this will be different.

hk,
@hk@mstdn.games avatar

@Sobtanian I was just telling my wife today that I'll eventually buy a new ereader. Mine broke a few years ago, and since then I've been using an old Kindle of hers. The thing is, in my brain it is a borrowed device and I feel like I have to return it, so I don't feel like using it all the time as I would with an ereader that was "mine". It's absurd, but sometimes my brain brains weirdly.

Can you load your own epubs in a Kobo? How open are they?

hk,
@hk@mstdn.games avatar

@Sobtanian awesome!! I'll take that into account then when deciding which one to buy next... Thank you!!

People: "Elden Ring's bosses are badly designed because they are way too aggressive and leave very little time for the player to counter-attack"

Me: I've just reached Pontiff Sulyvahn in #DarkSouls3 and... WHAT THE FUCK?? ER bosses are piece of cake in comparison to this!

hk,
@hk@mstdn.games avatar

Oh shit, I just beat that beast of a boss and my hands are still shaking... I didn't play it particularly well, but the Pontiff is dead, so there it is!

hk,
@hk@mstdn.games avatar

Here's the video of my fight against Pontiff Sulyvahn.

The big realisation, the turning tide in this combat, was finding out that the Pontiff's attacks could be parried. Which I didn't do particularly well, but enough to get me through the other end of the fight, so I'll take the win!

That's it, I give up on #Souldiers. I haven't beaten the final boss, and it's not a skill issue. The boss design is just bad, and it saddens me. Despite its flaws, I have been having fun with this game, and the pixel art is one of the best I've seen.

But this boss design leaves me with a very bitter sensation.

Anyway, credits rolling for Souldiers (on a YouTube video I'm watching), and on to the next adventure!

hk, to random
@hk@mstdn.games avatar

#Souldiers does several things right. The combat is good, the affinities and weaknesses system is fun...

But it does one thing terribly wrong, and it is too overstay its welcome. Each of the biomes is massive, but there's only a few ideas explored in each of them. You could cut back 30% of each biome and the game would work so much better.

By the time I complete an area, the feeling is relief at finally being done with that and being able to move on. Which is not a cool feeling to have.

@hk@mstdn.games avatar

Also, when you die in the second boss you have two options:

  • Restart the second fight, still with your consumables spent, or
  • Reload the last save and then having to traverse a final area (~15 minutes) with some uninteresting but forced combat, and several dialogue scenes, to get back to the first boss and try your luck from the beginning again.
