The issue with #FediBlockMeta is not Facebook accessing what is public data FFS 🤦‍♂️

Why #fosstodon''s admins focus on that leaves me very confused.

The issue is that #Meta are who they are and there is no way we should wait to see their play before shutting them out.

This is why I believe...

So long as we let people, even smart ones with good intentions, have power over us, they will screw up.

So, here's an interesting problem to nerd-snipe y'all.

Let's say you have a distributed p2p network, akin to IPFS, used for storing files.

Everything is content-addressed (i.e: you hash some data and that's now its 'ID' that you use to look it up in the network).

Most files are too big to upload as single pieces of data, so you split them up into chunks, upload reach chunk, and then upload some sort of 'index' file that just lists the IDs of each of the chunks.

@jsbarretto might be interesting to compare with SN 'self encryption '. Different goals maybe but interesting to critique each against the other.

Maybe not before you've explored your own ideas though.

See links at the end of S6. Much of the primer needs updating as the design has since changed (eg no longer use sections or node age) but anything on self encryption and chunks should be up to date.

@jsbarretto I think it's a balanced approach and there will still be enormous deduplication affects in a global storage system (no file, video, mp3, gif, PDF etc stored more than once).

Compression before encryption also saves space.

And encrypting all chunks, even public data makes it hard to know what data is stored in a node (to target the owner) or is flowing across the network. That's is good for privacy and anti-surveillance/censorship.

As I said, different goals.

@internetuserguy technically I don't know it. My impression is that it is lacking in some areas, an economic model for example. I'm not really the person to ask about projects other than Safe Network.

Yes, fedi admins have been in secret talks with Meta. Now confirmed, but don't worry, they aren't selling out we are told. 🤷‍♂️

The ease with which humans are intoxicated by power is a recurring theme, and one of our greatest weaknesses.

They think they can resist, that they can go into the dragon's lair and not be deceived or corrupted because they are the heroes of ancient legend. 🤦‍♂️

Humans are the weak point, the base vulnerability. So we must build #p2p tech like #SafeNetwork.

    @1br0wn it is absurd but not for that reason. If it is going to happen there be anything we can do about it.

    We didn't stop people building nuclear weapons, they don't unleash them because everyone is on the same page that they are a form of insurance rather than a sane tactical option. Hence Russia's threats have been regarded as empty except in certain media.

    If AGI happens it will eventually get out of its box, so worrying about it is pointless.

    Then Microsoft bought it and I warned again but most were.. no, this is great, look at the cookies and free stuff. 🤦‍♂️

    This has happened so many times and people don't learn.

    Sure, use github but expect it to try and extort you, slowly maybe, or all of a sudden but it will happen so be ready and help build alternatives like #p2pgit
