"The common thread, though, is merchandise. ... Merch has become an integral part of the casual running club scene, with every club offering something, ranging from baseball caps to technical running jackets." 🤮

fragmad,

@PaulGrahamRaven It's utterly insidious though when it affects spaces which shouldn't have "economic circumstances" and it's accepted unquestioningly as a good thing. It shows how rotten with neo-liberalism our society has become.

fragmad,

@PaulGrahamRaven That second paragraph is a more optimistic one than I can utter and all the better for it. Kudos!

@SFRuminations @dantescanline Ah, The Killing Ground is my favourite Ballard short.

Admittedly, I've felt this way for half a dozen years, but the more I read about on going Worldcon & Hugo matters, and fan culture in general, the more I wonder why folks are still so heavily invested in "fixing" it. Let it go. Be free.

fragmad,

@PaulGrahamRaven Aye, it does. I'm still puckish enough to want to occasionally suggest there are other ways to find meaning, and, for me, that's in finding that the enjoyment of, and motivation from, doing the thing, not attachment to the community around it.

fragmad,

@PaulGrahamRaven It didn't. No apologies necessary. :)

fragmad,

@PaulGrahamRaven Also, per one of your blog posts a few weeks ago, I owe you an email.

Watched The Wicker Man for the first time last night. Liked it, but don't love it.

I’ve often wondered if doctors ever get any follow up on how patients are doing. Like the GP that saw my son last night looked really worried! And I wanted to let her know that the antibiotics are working! (I’m so relieved!) But there’s no way to register that. Wonder if it would help at all?

fragmad,

@CatherineFlick I suspect given the current urgencies of the NHS that they do not, but after reading about the benefit of the ICU diaries that nurses write for patents last night suspect it would be a good thing for GP wellbeing.

fragmad,

@PaulGrahamRaven Huh, I finally found a legitimate time to write, "I wish to subscribe to your newsletter."

Yes, I'm interested.

I'm trying to psych myself up to head outside. The weather isn't bad, but it is dark, and, because it's November, only getting darker. Genuinely hate this time of year.

fragmad,

@PaulGrahamRaven Not April?

Some people find it weird or funny (or both) that I actually schedule blocks of time for writing emails -- as in "a block of time for one particular email" rather than "a block of time for writing multiple emails".

These are invariably people who have never received an email from me before.

fragmad,

@PaulGrahamRaven I wish more people did this. Slack has ruined thinking.

@PaulGrahamRaven I should start cycling towards Sweden for one of these, but the season is against me.

fragmad,

@PaulGrahamRaven Even though I lament how everything is digital these days I I can very much live without more small pieces of designer cellulose.

Scrubbing out a very cluttered inbox, and here's an email-to-self, date 6 June 2021, no body text, just the subject line "Oxytocin Jones".

I have no idea what this was about. Character name idea? Prospective poem title? Something I was supposed to look up or contact someone about?

I dunno. Put it this way: if you are Oxytocin Jones, or they are someone you know, ah, get in touch? Maybe I've owed you an email for two plus years?

fragmad,

@PaulGrahamRaven Inbox 3,123 on my personal account. Integer overflow on my work account.

Well, UK and Spain, looks like you're getting the North American smoke now.

It's only May and it's already smoke season.

fragmad,

@ethanschoonover Thanks, I hate it. :(
