The worst part about repairing a dryer over several days is that by the time you're finally able to put it back together, you have no idea where the SCSI cable went.
Gotta check all the DIY repair YouTube videos to see where this came from.

watching the latest Deviant Ollam talk, they mentioned wondering if you can just trigger carbon monoxide sensors with some chemistry.

Turns out you can just buy tester canisters! They're just spray cans of Carbon Monoxide! That sounds... somewhat dangerous.

@NireBryce yeah! it's implied that this contains CO, sure, but I had to check the rest of the page to confirm that this is really just CO, not some chemical that the sensors are also sensitive too

Part of me wonders if WD Red Plus 3TB drives are in fact 4TB drives with different firmware, seeing that the product brief doesn't list 3TB drives:

https://documents.westerndigital.com/content/dam/doc-library/en_us/assets/public/western-digital/product/internal-drives/wd-red-plus-hdd/product-brief-western-digital-wd-red-plus-hdd.pdf

@cr1901 like how processors get binned based on how well that perform at different speeds?
maybe 3tb drives are 4tb drives that failed some QA?

@cr1901 This is the sort of stuff to look at the Backblaze hard drive stats:
https://www.backblaze.com/cloud-storage/resources/hard-drive-test-data

If these drives are less reliable than others, they'd show up in the stats.

Silly Doom trivia question for anyone who ISN'T following my tumblr:

So someone implied Doom (1993) rendered triangles. I pointed out that it does not, it's solely rendering line strips for walls and sprites, and weird horizontal strips for floors.
HOWEVER: I was wrong. Doom DOES render triangles. But where does it render them? Because it's only one specific place.

(Outside of level designers making triangular rooms. That doesn't count)

That is, anyone who doesn't follow my tumblr and also isn't @fabinou or John Carmack

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

@kemayo close! But it's an arrow, not a triangle

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

@razze close! But normally there are no triangles in the map view: just sectors and the player arrow (which isn't a triangle)

I should be able to charge my phone over PoE from my laptop. I don't know why it would have this feature, but it should

it looks like the max current from an expresscard is 1.3 amps at 3.3v, or a miserable 4.3 watts.

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

I'm from the past so I'm offended by 3.3v interfaces.

I'm sure it's only a matter of time before we end up moving to USB 5 which ironically has no 5v

SAVE 5V INTERFACES!

I wonder how hard it is to make a fake USB printer.
Like, a printer that takes any printout and goes "yep, that printed just fine" but nothing ever comes out anywhere

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

@Pyxaron hah! nice. And it doesn't throw any errors when you print to it?

You're never gonna believe this, but it turns out I'm gonna need to build a new keyboard

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

several people have suggested complicated ways to encode the 6 commands onto 3 pedals, but the main problem is that this is a keyboard designed to be used by a distracted idiot, ie me.

so I can't make it super complicated or I won't be able to remember how to operate it

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

@moira I thought about that too!
the annoying thing is that 4 of the commands are clearly grouped together, so it'd be weird to have 3 on one foot and 1 on the other

I finally figured out what's wrong with my dryer!
There's no drum to put the clothes in. This is a rookie mistake, Samsung.

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

@ifixcoinops oh, that!

well, every single part was broken, if that explains it

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

@Farbs @ifixcoinops I love that there's always a guy. for any X, there's an X guy

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

It's all back together and currently supposedly drying some towels. Hopefully it's working, I won't know until they come out

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

The final tally, btw:

This dryer has the following items that are the main failure points that will need to be replaced if any of them break:
4 barrel wheels
1 tensioning wheel
1 belt
4 sensors
2 felt drum belts.

Of those, how many were broken?
Well, it's easier to list which weren't:
1 felt drum belt
0-4 sensors (replaced anyway as they be bad)

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

So if one more felt belt had died, this dryer would have had basically every major breakable part replaced. This isn't even the same dryer anymore, really.

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

It is the dryer of theseus!

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

@kboyd good question! If I hacked in it more, maybe. But if I make this repair project take any longer just for Foone reasons, I risk my roommates murdering me

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

and it works! better than before it "broke", because it was probably at least partially broken before we even moved into this house
