How cool is that?!

@natsume_shokogami @atomicpoet @fediversenews Putting aside the “read-only” mode for @threads.net accounts, fediverse integration is opt-in, so they kinda did something to have their content available for us in the fediverse. I say is a good start.

I’ve personally never used Uber, Lyft, or other so-called “ridesharing” services, and I never would. IMO they’re just glorified hitchhiking.

Likewise, I’ve never used or would use Airbnb.

I understand that a lot of people do use them and consider these crowdsourced services to be “normal”, but from my perspective it’s baffling why people put so much trust in totally unvetted, unaccountable randos.

@krzyzanowskim @lapcatsoftware @amyworrall Not to mention, in a good chunk of the world, taxi drivers are not hired by any cab company; rather, individuals can obtain a license from their government to operate their own cabs

Apple's new clutch at malicious compliance is its requirement to “Be a member of good standing […] for two continuous years or more, and have an app that had more than one million first annual installs on iOS in the EU in the prior calendar year.”, which it has applied to web-based sideloading.

I'm sorry Apple, but my rights under the DMA don't disappear if I have less than a million EU users on the App Store, or if I have an ‘individual’ developer account. This restriction simply won’t work

eliaschao,
@eliaschao@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith Is no surprise to anyone that Apple is being as malicious compliant as possible, I wonder what’s your opinion on how those requirements would actually help fight bad actors from taking advantage of users.

Aside from the web distribution guidelines, I would argue that having some financial capacity is actually a good requirement, specially after stuff like Twitter/Reddit removing their API access from third parties, thus making the devs having to refund subs.

WhatsApp is the ugliest most popular product ever. Function trumps form. Don't get too hung up on making things pretty - focus on solving a real problem for users or making something that works. Ugly can win big if it’s good.

eliaschao,
@eliaschao@mastodon.social avatar

@Daojoan It also helps to be (one of?) the first doing something.

I believe BBM had the chance to become the biggest IM app of its kind, but they probably thought that it would make people keep buying their phones.

Had they made BBM cross-platform before WhatsApp gained popularity, RIM may still be around.

I’ve preached about this at various times. I can’t believe I wrote this is 2012 and it’s just as relevant today.

This particular post is about folks using Facebook to drive their business, but it applies elsewhere. It’s your brand or content, you own it, so protect it.

eliaschao,

@fahrni It becomes tricky with tactics like zero rating, though. I know this varies from country to country, but a good number of people don’t have the freedom to navigate to websites freely; however, they do have 'free' access to Facebook.

This is the first time since probably 2008 (for iPod touch 2nd gen, the good one) that I haven’t been a day one new Apple device person but you know what, I’m fine waiting. It isn’t even the money. I could buy it with cash no problem. But it’s the principle of not having a way to test it in advance and no clear use case that has me concerned. A friend did get one and I’ll try hers out on the 2nd and I might have FOMO, but like, I gotta be honest, I haven’t been sold on it yet.

eliaschao,

@fahrni Twitter and Reddit used to be The places I spent most of my time on the internet, but now I don’t feel like supporting either visiting their sites.

Mastodon replaced the need for Twitter for me, but Lemmy is still not there in terms of replacing Reddit, which really sucks tbh.

eliaschao,
@eliaschao@mastodon.social avatar

@fahrni Unlike what a lotta people seems to think, I do believe that Threads adding support to ActivityPub would benefit us here on Mastodon.

Regular users are way more likely to signup for Threads than Mastodon, and that would grow the network for us as well, so maybe interacting with friends & family would be easier without switching platforms.

eliaschao,
@eliaschao@mastodon.social avatar

@dimillian A bit misleading since you had to go to the “News” section to make your point.

Twitter used to rank well in the All Apps section, and it does not anymore—although it’s probably because most of its users have it downloaded already. 🤷🏻‍♂️

That being said, Twitter is far from dead. No matter how much we keep saying it here and over at Threads. It’s becoming a bit of a echo chamber in here ngl.

I’d imagine Paul could get away with an 8GB machine given, last I heard, all of his code is written in Objective-C. That means really fast compile times!

Also, I bet I could easily get away with using an 8GB MacBook Air for my dev work.

Like I say all the time, it’s not like I’m building Photoshop, Word, or Excel. I’m just building tiny iOS apps. https://tapbots.social/@paul/111375467028302157

eliaschao,
@eliaschao@mastodon.social avatar

@fahrni I’ve seen the argument about longevity and electronic waste.

Most people are not upgrading their computers every 1-3 years, and 8GB isn’t enough if you’re planning to keep your Mac mid/long term.

In the past you could upgrade the RAM and squeeze a few extra years out of the machine, this isn’t the case anymore.

Also, MacBooks are not cheap computers, it would go a long way to upgrade the base models to have at least 12GB; the cost difference for Apple would be negligible.

eliaschao,
@eliaschao@mastodon.social avatar

@fahrni I would argue that 16GB is the bare minimum for a “Pro” labeled machine.

But then for Apple “pro” only means more expensive something, so what gives.
