I haven’t heard anything controversial about Garrity. She seems like she’s doing a good job signing checks and watching the books.

Fairbuds are Fairphone’s proof that we really could make better tiny gadgets (arstechnica.com)

But of course we all know that the big manufacturers don’t do this not because they can’t but because they don’t want to. Planned obsolescence is still very much the name of the game, despite all the bullshit they spout about sustainability.

When I shopped for wireless earbuds, I spent a half hour comparing the top brands (most expensive), so I ended up asking the clerk what he used (saw one in his ear). The ones he recommended were $20 and they’re great, sound decent, and last all day.

Sometimes cheap is just as good.

Anyone else find this annoying? (sh.itjust.works)

That the labels for the apps get truncated so you can only read “Proton” plus the first letter of the app. I’m only able to distinguish based on the icons which isn’t great because Pass and Drive are similar colors, and Pass and VPN, and Drive and Calendar are similar shapes.

Can you link to LW’s definition of disposable addresses?

Wikipedia is gauging interest for an extension that uses AI to see if any claim is cited on Wikipedia (meta.wikimedia.org)

A prototype is available, though it's Chrome-only and English-only at the moment. How this'll work is you select some text and then click on the extension, which will try to "return the relevant quote and inference for the user, along with links to article and quality signals"....

dukethorion,
@dukethorion@lemmy.world avatar

It says the user has to highlight then click the extension.

I can currently right-click and then click “Search on Wikipedia” in the context menu. I believe this works in both FF and chromium browsers.

Fuck AI.

I feel like I remember seeing somewhere that the entirety of Wikipedia can be downloaded? (Use offline)

You’d have to update periodically for newer articles.

The government should never be in control of a means of free speech. You know who has Government-controlled internet?

Russia Iran China N Korea India Some EU countries Turkey Etc.

I imagine a bad actor could buy a custom domain, connect it to proton, and then spam millions of people from thousands of addresses, using Proton’s infrastructure?

What is the # limit on a custom domain?

Interoperability law that only applies to one company. Neat.

This tells me a few things.

  1. One man has no reaction to that type of vaccine. So, either it works perfectly, or is perfectly worthless.
  2. Nobody is really tracking these vaccines.
  3. 216 other people might not have gotten a needed shot because this dipshit likes needle pricks, and it was cheaper than acupuncture.

It really makes Lemmy suck as much as Reddit did.

Linux market share passes 4% for first time (arstechnica.com)

We see the nearly 33-year-old OS’s market share growing 31.3 percent from June 2023, when we last reported on Linux market share, to February. Since June, Linux usage has mostly increased gradually. Overall, there’s been a big leap in usage compared to five years ago. In February 2019, Linux was reportedly on 1.58 percent of...

And probably most Linux users, generally.

Can the older data be compressed somehow? Instead of being removed?

dukethorion,
@dukethorion@lemmy.world avatar

I think every node needs the same dataset for the blockchain to be valid.

Maybe a rolling dataset, with the earliest transactions falling off after their data is somehow archived (but accessible to the current nodes)?

OR

The current nodes could do a hardfork (NewNodes), with the ability to reference the legacy chain snapshot for the next X years.

Wallet1 created in 2015. Contains 1 XMR. Hardfork in 2025 to truncate the entire DB which becomes a balance reference copy. After the snapshot, they would have a balance on the “new” chain. In order to transact, they’d have to use a New Node which knows their previous balance from the legacy chain.

Is that possible?

dukethorion,
@dukethorion@lemmy.world avatar

Because there is always some dipshit who would pay for it.

Guess I have to go delete those blogs with personal works on them.

I can’t help but feel that everything in the flashbacks were daydreams of Fry. After all, he did go back in time and live out that timeline, eventually becoming Lars (when Bender shoots through the window, burning Fry and flash-fossilizing Seymour.

It isn’t as upsetting that way.

dukethorion,

Thanks. What a ridiculous restriction. Is LW defederated from lemmy.one? I can’t see my other replies from the other account. Is that because dot One allows VPNs?

dukethorion,
@dukethorion@lemmy.world avatar

Yup, found that and both are federated. Maybe there’s a disconnect somewhere because of CF.

It's never been a better time to switch to Firefox (www.androidpolice.com)
