What are the recommended ways to install Python on Windows, macOS, and Linux? Is it downloading from python.org for all of them? Or is it Microsoft Store, Homebrew, and apt-get?

diji,
@diji@mastodon.social avatar

@AlSweigart For Windows, download the official installer or install via winget.

For Mac, I'd recommend Homebrew.

For Linux, use your distro's packager?

Pyenv is nice for switching environments. I keep watching Rye, as it would hopefully make this all obsolete.

    @AlSweigart Well...

    Pros:

    • Been around for a long while.
    • Integrates PySafety for CVE checking
    • Some useful commands like pipenv shell and pipenv update simplify workflows.

    Cons:

    • Very slow resolver.
    • Error messages in some cases can be cryptic and difficult to resolve.
    • By default, puts virtual environments in a completely separate location (you can change this behavior in a few ways)

    Source: Used Pipenv for 4 years in my previous job.

    Update: Everyone is okay. Sounds like my oldest’s high school sustained some damage (good thing school ended last week). Local kids and friends accounted for. Creeks are high, so flooding is a concern.

    Now checking in on friends further east.

    Aaaand I’m coming down with a cold, which is always “fun” right before travel. I haven’t had a cold since 2022 so I was due for one, I suppose.

    Survived the trip home from #PyConUS , got hugs from my kids, setup my new computer, and then collapsed in my bed.

    Today is all about recovery, errands, and self care. Laundry, grocery shopping, and rotting on the couch.

    So, to kick all of that off, I’m watching Top Secret!, as one does.

    @AlSweigart After talking to so many people, I’ve decided to start playing with LLMs. I’m still highly skeptical, but tribal pressure has convinced me to give it a shot.

    @simon has just explained at #pyconus a rule that I have, that can be summed up as:

    “Do not do magic that you do not understand.”

    diji,
    @diji@mastodon.social avatar

    @dabeaz @simon Hah! At the end of the day, none of it is magic, but I suppose both lines still work.

    That’s to @mariatta and the rest of the staff for making my first #PyConUS so damned magical. Now I’m gonna have to come every year, aren’t I?!?

    We don't say "congratulations" when someone becomes an open source maintainer.

    Instead we say, "Congratulations, thank you, and sorry"

    @mariatta At least you get “thank you” and “sorry”. In corporate, you just get “are you done yet”.

    This got bigger than I expected on LinkedIn, so I figured I'd repost it here.

    Well, since it’s now public knowledge, my time at my current gig is ending soon. More details on my next challenge will be coming soon.

    In the meantime, I have a lot of people to say “thank you” and “so long” to. Who knew that in 9 years, I’d make so many good friends? Here’s a few things I learned in my first 9 years of software and test automation development:
