The electricity and water use required by data centres is becoming cause for concern. Iowa and Ireland are calling for moratoriums on new development projects. Microsoft’s global water consumption grew 34% from 2021 to 2022. And estimates say that around 80% of content in data centres could be stuff we never use again, stored by default to consume energy in perpetuity for no purpose at all.

Generative video: Hold my beer.

dave_rogers,

@axbom @pattykimura People were afraid of AI destroying the world making paper clips. Turns out, it’s gonna be cute cat videos.

Had to get out of the house this morning. Down by the Tolomato River. These are all SOOC because I’m lazy like that. Well, contrast adjustment on the three in the tree. #photography #birds #EM1X #Olympus #OMD #Nocatee #Tolomato

dave_rogers,

@fahrni Thanks! There’s probably a meteorological term for what we’re looking at, but I don’t don’t know what it is. "Neat" works for me though! 😜

Saw and heard the Woz at the Florida Forum tonight. Great guy. Enjoyed every minute. Astronaut David Scott was also in the audience, Gemini 8, Apollo 9 and Apollo 15.

ISS track in the lower left quadrant. Crescent moon in the upper left. My ugly mug at the top of the frame. Playing with the MEIKE circular fisheye. About a stop slower than the mZuiko 8mm/f1.8. Should’ve used the remote to trip the shutter. #photography #ISS #startrails #LIveComposite #Olympus #OMD #EM1.3

I think I need one of these. I wonder if one of my 20 oz tumbler would fit under this? 🤔

Fallout analysis of the Confederate monument removal in Jacksonville. I would differ with A.G. in only one respect. While the removal can be viewed, and will be by some, as an act of defiance directed against more than a generation of increasingly radical, right-wing rule by the Republican Party, that was not the intent.

The intention of the mayor was to keep a promise, and remove a hateful, hurtful relic of White Supremacy from a public space.

Job well done.

Nailed it.

My lying, spineless, anti-democratic, morally bankrupt representative, John Rutherford.

But he’ll be reelected.

Took the Pentax MX-1 along with me. Still learning the camera. Hadn’t set it to capture RAW+ JPEG, so had to work from JPEGs. And it was after dinner, waiting for the car at Valley Smoke Grill. Hands weren’t steady. So these have been flogged by Topaz DeNoiseAI and SharpenAI and are unremarkable save for an indication of what I might have been going for.

A little experiment this morning. Found a folder with some XZ-1 images from August ’21. Apparently, I planned to create a "Dramatic Tone" panorama. So, this morning I did. Then I used the RAW files to recreated it in Affinity 2, then used the tone mapping persona to try to re-create "dramatic tone"from the Olympus filter, then ran that through Topaz DeNoiseAI.

Not art. #XZ1 #Olympus

Batteries: Cost Savings and Carbon Savings

Friends, the other day I was chatting with a fellow member of the radical wing of the Teddington Carbonista Faction (TFC). They had recently bought an expensive domestic battery but had just lately realised that the carbon dioxide emission savings from using the battery to time-shift their grid consumption were not very large. And, being on the bright-green wing of our faction, their distress was not relieved when I asked…

https://protonsforbreakfast.wordpress.com/2023/11/10/batteries-cost-savings-and-carbon-savings/

dave_rogers,

@davep @jgkoomey @Protons4B Speaking of factors "ignored," any cost benefit analysis with regard to battery use is flawed because the costs of utility power are subsidized directly and indirectly by government and by the externalities that have been ignored and led us into this crisis.
We installed our system with no thought of "breaking even" financially. We installed what we could afford, and it’s been just about right.

dave_rogers,

@davep @jgkoomey @Protons4B We’ve added load since we installed the system. A mini-split to cool the garage to hopefully help prolong the life of the batteries. It could get up to 130°F in there. And a PHEV RAV4 Prime, which we recharge after every use. I limit the batteries’ discharge to 80% of capacity, partly as a whole-house backup for grid outages, and partly to maintain battery life. I think if we had about 1KW more on the roof, we’d be >90%

dave_rogers,

@davep @jgkoomey @Protons4B To be clear, we switch to grid power when the batteries reach 20% of capacity. We’ve had a few episodes of loss of grid power, and for the most part, they’re invisible. We did have one episode where my wife’s iMac rebooted, but mine didn’t. I’m very pleased with the system overall.

dave_rogers,

@jgkoomey @davep @Protons4B The Powerwalls are connected to the internet and "phone home" to the mothership. That may bother some people, but I’m ok with it. The Stormwatch feature is an example, where Tesla will command the batteries to stop discharging and switch over to grid power if necessary to recharge them if we’re in a "watch" or "warning" situation for a weather event. You can opt out if you want.
