I am totally blind, and I am interested in archiving rare software such as old screen readers and speech synthesizers. I am also an audio and mythology nerd.

I had a weird dream where John Rye released the Orpheus source code, and that it got ported to IOS. I know @FreakyFwoof would really like if that were a reality.

Considering DECtalk 4.62 hasn't been worked on in a little over 20 years, I thought I would start a project to continue development. I am calling this DECtalk 4.621, and the repository can be found at https://github.com/datajake1999/dt4621

I was having a conversation with @BTyson , and we were discussing how eSpeak has been going down hill ever since NG came along. I am curious how wide spread this opinion is, and would especially value input from native speakers of languages other than English. Considering eSpeak is open source, there is nothing stopping someone such as myself from forking the original eSpeak and backporting features that users actually want. The NV Access Klatt fixes come to mind, as well as the variants that were included in NVDA before NG was implemented.

DECtalk 4.60 R11 has an interesting voice parameter called glottal speed. Here is a little demo.

These are the kinds of things that me and @MutedTrampet get up to while we are on TT.

Would anyone be interested in a SAPI5 driver that sends text to a serial port?

I got my DECtalk PC2 yesterday, and I ran the demo application with the NWS version of DECtalk that I built for this hardware.

Why am I listening to DECtalk adaptations of Red Dwarf through a floating point UK English version of DECtalk Access32 4.60 R8?

I was bored, so I built the DECtalk 5.0 Beta code that we got back in 2015 against the new SAPI5 interface. Enjoy, or not! https://datajake.braillescreen.net/tts/sapi_voices/DECtalk%205.0%20SAPI5%20New.exe

It is possible this is the first time this has happened in DECtalk history.

I just uploaded some Artic Technologies audio tutorials that are on the Wayback Machine to my collection. https://datajake.braillescreen.net/manual%20and%20tutorial%20tapes/artictech.com

This article about screen readers is extremely misleading. https://fixthephoto.com/best-screen-readers-for-the-blind.html

Do you ever find yourself enjoying something that is objectively bad, but deep down you somehow think it is amazing?

I have noticed that several old MIDI files have duplicate tracks such as drums on both channels 10 and 16. If I am understanding this correctly, the last few MIDI channels were sometimes reserved for playback on FM sound cards, and most MIDI players don't take this into account.

The Neural voices NVDA addon was updated. The default language is now English, and audio device fixes were implemented. The link is the same as before.

I just wrote a Win32 application that simulates time announcements as heard on CRS. by default, it announces the time every quarter hour. https://datajake.braillescreen.net/tts/dectalk%20software%20and%20manual/nwsclock.zip

For what it's worth, DECtalk 4.621 Windows builds are now available. I don't intend on updating this version any further, unless I find a fix for the UK English rising pitch bug. As such, all installers are in a single zip file, which can be found at https://datajake.braillescreen.net/tts/dectalk%20software%20and%20manual/DECtalk%204.621.zip

I would like to apologize to all of my UK followers for unleashing these sapi5 DECtalk builds onto the internet.
Fixed point version: https://datajake.braillescreen.net/tts/sapi_voices/DECtalk%204.60%20UK%20SAPI5.exe
Floating point version: https://datajake.braillescreen.net/tts/sapi_voices/DECtalk%204.60%20UK%20FP%20SAPI5.exe
Enjoy, or not!

I was one of possibly a few random people who were disappointed to find the Remote Synthesizer not included on the BrailleNote Apex. I understand why it was removed, however a hardware speech synthesizer is a useful thing to have around, especially if you don't have a working sound card or a Braille display.

Apparently, the company that last owned the Orpheus TTS engine (Meridian One) was dissolved in October of 2022, which means Orpheus is effectively an orphan work at this point. Interestingly, the Meridian One site is still somewhat functional, and I managed to download an open directory that contains the latest Orpheus release among other things. I also discovered another open directory, which contained Orpheus API documentation that was Hiding in plain sight for a little over 10 years. Funnily enough, this documentation is for Dolphin's version of Orpheus, and not the version that was soled by Meridian.

For those who don't know, Inform is a language that is used to write ZMachine compatible interactive fiction games.
Apparently, the Inform 6.21 command line compiler was ported to Windows CE, and compiled for ARM. Anyone who knows me probably knows where this is going.
