I'm really surprised that the PhET simulations (https://phet.colorado.edu/) seem to be completely inaccessible with the keyboard. Am I just looking at ones that haven't been updated yet? I tried the "springs and masses" one, which looks like it's had some attention in the last few weeks.

Isn't this kind of accessibility a basic requirement under US law?

christianp,
@christianp@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@aadmaa they seem to be a mixed bag. I tried one of those before my first toot, and it wasn't keyboard accessible. I've tried a couple more now and they are, but for example https://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulations/number-line-integers doesn't seem to be, even though it's in the "access & inclusion" list

On https://open.umn.edu/opentextbooks/subjects, there's a list of subject headings, each with a collapsed sublist. The lists expand as soon as you move your cursor over a subject heading, so as you move your cursor down to the one you want, the preceding subjects expand.

I can't think who this is good for. Why not just have them all expanded at the start?

Help me do my work today please!

I'm making an extension for @numbas to add a spreadsheet input type, so now I need examples.

I'm looking for examples of forms, tables or spreadsheets that you might have to fill in, where the entries are determined by some external information like measurements.

The motivating example I have is the form our surveyors use to record levelling measurements. There must be other examples from professions such as pharmacy or the sciences.

No example is too simple: I think this will be really valuable for the mathematically unsophisticated stuff that comes under "basic numeracy" in vocational courses.

You have pieces labelled 1 to N.
You arrange them in a line N times, so that at turn k the piece labelled k is in position k. (so on the first turn piece 1 is at the start, on turn 2 piece 2 is next to that, and so on)
No piece can be in the same position for two consecutive turns.

How many ways of doing this are there?

For N=3, there's only one:
On turn 1, it must be 1xx
On turn 2, it must be x2x and 2 can't be where it was before, so turn 1 was 132 and turn 2 is 321.
On turn 3 it must be 213.

For N=2, it can't be done.

For N=4, there are loads of ways.

I've written some code, and the sequence you get for N=1 to 5 is not in the #OEIS yet.

After reading @Edent's blog post about street view, I went to look at my own house. I was disappointed to see the last photo on my street is from 11 years ago, but then I clicked 10m down the road and found they've driven down the next street THIS MONTH! My street must just be really boring...

I think I need some #UX help.

When people book a meeting with me using cal.com, they have to fill in this screen.

About 50% of people enter my name in the "Who are you" field.

I want them to enter their name.

What wording should I use to make this more obvious?

christianp,
@christianp@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@Edent "I'm Terence Eden. Who are you?"

If I'm not wrong, the possibility to click on a button on a toot image in order to see the alt-text has disappeared (at least on my server). Now we have to move the mouse over the image and wait. I'm not convinced by this UI choice. I feel like I might be less motivated to complete the alt-texts in details (e.g. sometimes I would include light puns) if less people are tempted to read them. Is there already a discussion happening about this? #mastodon #alttext

christianp,
@christianp@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@yrochat I can't remember that ever being in the standard web interface. Have you used any other clients?

manlius, to random Italian

I have a figure made with the R package 'maps'.

The paper with that figure got accepted by a journal requiring a CCBy4 license.

What's the license of figures that we produce by using that R package? The code of the package is released under GPL3, but not clear to me if that applies also to the figures produced by me with that package.

#RStat #datascience #license #copyright

Ideas? @franco_vazza @tiago

christianp,
@christianp@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@manlius the licence of the software doesn't apply to things made with that software. That's why you can make CC-licensed documents with Microsoft Word, for example

christianp,
@christianp@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@manlius @tiago that shape file will have come from somewhere, so should have licensing information attached. If it doesn't, you need to talk to the person you got it from

christianp,
@christianp@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@manlius @tiago ahh, I've looked at the repo for the maps package (https://github.com/adeckmyn/maps) and there are indeed lots of shape files with no attribution. Tricky!

I've updated my "Can I Also Use?" tool to load in a file of selected features, so you can document which browser features you use in a web project: https://somethingorotherwhatever.com/can-i-also-use/

I've added a settings file to the @numbas repository so we can keep track of which features we're using: https://github.com/numbas/Numbas/blob/master/can-i-also-use-settings.json

christianp,
@christianp@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@jix those are good suggestions! Can I get away with saying I had already thought of them? 😉

I think I need to find a way of making it run faster, before doing even more computation. There are thousands of features, and it's already quite slow to respond to clicks. I might be using Vue wrong; it feels like it's doing a lot of work for stuff that's hidden

A decade later and this #Google bug remains firmly in the WONTFIX category.

If you teach maths in higher-ed, it's a good (free, entirely online) conference to learn about e-assessment: https://eams.ncl.ac.uk/register/

The two hardest problems in mathematics are establishing equivalence, and deciding when things are the same

@Scmbradley ah yes, I know the one! (or one equivalent to it)
