Built a custom drafting experience and it's wonderful. No more writing in the publishers' word docs.

@sarah filamentphp + a bunch of custom code for language analysis.

In 2 minds about adding LLM re-phrasing suggestions to a custom filament field; because there are many good reasons not to use them. I agree with those reasons. Especially when generative stuff is used as a crutch.

assertchris,
@assertchris@mastodon.social avatar

Thing is: I want to explore how I could build something useful that is difficult to use without actual creative input from a writer. With output that is in the style of the current body of work.

assertchris,
@assertchris@mastodon.social avatar

Anything generative I add Will absolutely be opt in; but I’m also wondering just how much warning I’m going to add before showing folks how to enable it. 🤔

Had somebody ask me to keep politics off the platform for a post I made today.

They're blocked.

If you ask people not to post political stuff, it means "don't post political stuff I don't agree with." And that's BS.

@mwop debates about nonsense code things still on the table?

This article uses as it's main example, but it applies to , , even just a much. I say that as a recovering Drupal dev who used to use the standardization argument.

Greedy management is the reason we can't have nice things.

assertchris,
@assertchris@mastodon.social avatar

@Crell Do you sincerely believe the libraries/frameworks you have mentioned are "actively worse than the alternative by any objective measure"? I think the article is good, but I don't agree with that classification the non-React things (and, even then, RN is actually enabling good stuff that the alternatives aren't).

    @AlSweigart I enable Touch ID for opening the vault, and for sudo, to avoid tying passwords in front of cameras. It asks for password entry every couple weeks though.

    Life of the Staff Software Engineer — 6 hours over two days of step-debugging a failed test, and going over ALL the tests, and checking my test factories, to discover deep in the code I was using a datetime library wrong.

    assertchris,
    @assertchris@mastodon.social avatar

    @Crell @maccath @grmpyprogrammer @derickr Carbon wasn’t made by Laravel, it was adopted before the DateTime improvements and stays for legacy reasons. Adopted because it was popular across the [whole PHP] community.

    assertchris,
    @assertchris@mastodon.social avatar

    @maccath I think the native stuff would be a good replacement, but I don’t see it happening anytime soon with how deeply it’s embedded in the ORM.

    Still crazy to me that a credit card is basically your money password written on a card in your wallet. Want to pay over the phone? Just tell us your money password!

    assertchris,
    @assertchris@mastodon.social avatar

    @andrewfeeney and it works anywhere in the world, often with only a subset of the data. It’s half-factor authentication.

    I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how the capitalist idea of wealth (as opposed to abundance) is built on the assumption of wealth disparity. Being “wealthy” is having power to avoid unpleasant tasks or responsibilities by delegating them to those who are powerless to avoid the same. Everybody can’t have this kind of “wealth”, or it doesn’t work. The rich are only rich if there are many more poor folks. It makes me increasingly uncomfortable with my own privilege.

    assertchris,
    @assertchris@mastodon.social avatar

    @tappenden @andrewfeeney “capitalism improvise the lives of poors” is the same argument as “McDonalds is healthcare because at least people eat”.

    I was at a store that had a sign up saying "Order by December 15th for The Holidays".

    And I just think it's idiotic?

    Like "Happy Holidays" is a great statement that acknowledges that there's a bunch of holidays around now, and the person you're speaking to could be celebrating any of them (or none).

    But... Those different holidays have different dates. Hanukkah ended on the 14th this year, so the store can't make that delivery in time.

    That deadline can only apply to one "Holiday".

    Everyone is only temporarily abled. It takes one accident or genetic irregularity to put you in the same boat as those you’re not considering in your applications. Even if it’s selfishness, maybe think about how you’d struggle to use your own software and adjust accordingly.

    I had shared this in FB but not here — mini-me had a seizure on Friday when I got back from my 2nd hospital visit to get pain meds for my bruised ribs (ironically she kicked me in the same ribs while I was getting her on her side). CT scan showed nothing but she’s at a different hospital emerg room right now as her family doctor is concerned about really high white blood cell counts and memory loss. Good thoughts for her please.

    Me: “Code coverage and static analysis are two different things”

    Them: “Well, beginners are looking at types and I did say ‘perhaps’”

    Blocking and moving on because that is horseshit.

    Discoverability sucks here. The only time I follow someone new is because they follow me first. Perhaps it’s because I tend to be cautious about how many people I follow, so I don’t have a critical mass of people who are boosting; but I just don’t seem to see new posters on here nearly as often as elsewhere.
