All these years later (27 years since its creation?) I’ve now got a fully UNLOCKED copy of NewtHack. This means I no longer am forced to stop after beating LVL 1.

To the Amulet of Yendor! Let's go!!!

The Lost Vikings, originally released on SNES in 1993, was quickly ported to Amiga where it looks and sounds fantastic.

Silicon & Synapse, the company that produced this game in southern California, would go on to become Blizzard soon after its release.

About a week ago I posted about NewtHack, a Roguelike for Apple Newton that only lets you play level 1 unless you buy a key. I was complaining how so many of these old games/softwares were soft-locked now by asking for codes we can no longer provide.

Someone here sent me a code for an earlier version to try. But now that reply is GONE, apparently deleted. Are you still here, anonymous kind soul? Can you send it to me again?

@vga256 Mine is version 1.1, yeah. There's even a separate sound package that hooks into it, which is pretty cool.

@vga256
What’s crazy is back in 2021 I went down this rabbit hole before. I even located the original software dev. He responded to me and told me he was unable to recover the Zip disk that had the original source for the project, but he appreciated the flashback.

He mentioned at the time that he was totally fine with someone hacking the game if anybody wanted to give that a shot to bypass the registration code . He even asked me to let him know if anyone was ever successful. 😕

amigalove,
@amigalove@mastodon.social avatar

@falken @vga256 @newtontalk I tried multiple times and it keeps rejecting the email, which is really weird because I’ve been a member for a long time and I’ve sent to it before. It’s still just sitting in my outbox.

amigalove,
@amigalove@mastodon.social avatar

@vga256 Are you looking for 1.0 since that version has a known S/N to try?

amigalove,
@amigalove@mastodon.social avatar

@vga256 It's almost as if 1.0 has been surgically erased from our timeline.

Last week I posted an article on the symbolism and artistic intents found within the iconic painting for Ultima IV, Quest of the Avatar (there's a lot).

On a whim I decided to send the article directly to the artist, Denis Loubet, who lives in Austin, Texas. I didn't expect a response.

HE WROTE ME BACK
Here is the article, and his detailed response posted below:

I found this amazing artwork on the cover of Amazing Computing from 1989. Titled “Screen” by DeWayne Stauffer, it had won 2nd place in that year’s New York AmiEXPO Art and Video Contest in the 2D category.

As far as I can tell, this image does not exist digitally in any Amiga disk format. (if it does, I’ll gladly stop doing what I’m doing…)

I’m attempting to re-create it in DPaint III in 32 colors. I still have a long way to go but I’m making progress.

Rather than walk away with just a superficial 'toot' about this amazing box art, I decided to write down ALL of my thoughts on why I believe this painting is a high watermark for game art. Most everyone recognizes the image instantly, but once you really LOOK at it, and analyze it, it's amazing.

One of the most intriguing and clever box art paintings ever created filled with symbolism and cross-cultural inspiration.

Our character is seen from the back, hair covering any facial features. This allows you to assume the role of the character more directly.

The colors and angles force your eyes to repeatedly look at the glowing ankh at the top of the staff. An Egyptian symbol? In a D&D-inspired adventure?

Ankhs depict life, air, water. Look at the cover one more time.

Arrrrr, don’t tell Adobe, laddie, but their “old” software does 95% of all the things you’ll ever need or want to do. More or less.

An’ no one’s pillaging or plundering, matey. These goods were found floating on the high seas, fair and square. 🏴‍☠️

You have to be careful with hand scanners. Go too fast and you might exaggerate certain features your subject.

Slow hand. Easy touch.

Also in 1983, Lucasfilm (later Pixar) made the first high-resolution computer-generated image that was supposed to be near-photorealistic and "a single-frame movie".

"The Road to Point Reyes" took a month to render.

amigalove,
@amigalove@mastodon.social avatar

@thomasfuchs Side note, I used to LOVE going to "The Marshall Store" in Point Reyes and having barbequed oysters there overlooking the water and beautiful natural scenery. One of the best chill things to do in that neck of the woods. Once did an epic bike ride with one of my best friends over there and we ended at The Marshall Store as a reward. Gorgeous place.
