We almost lost Koda last week due to acute pancreatitis.

He's back home since Sunday and as active as always!

But he's taking a lot of medications, and he has to soon remove his spleen (w/ a golf ball sized tumour), and with his age the surgery is very risky, but needed 😢.

He's turning 15 this September.

I never posted this publically: I take a photo per day with Koda. I have more than 5000 daily Koda photos :D

Left: 1st day with Koda, 15/11/2009.

Right: 24/04/2024.

Photo of a man wearing glasses smiling close to a senior dachshund dog that is lying on a big gray bed. The dog is belly up, looking at the man. It's me and my dog Koda in 2024.

Unfortunately, worrying about money is necessary for dog longevity. Because then you can always pay for the best food and treatment.

For example, for the 4 days that he spent in intensive care, it cost me only €289 here in Portugal's countryside.

In Denmark these same 4 days would have cost me approximately 72000 DKK ~ €9653 and the treatment would be much worse (there's a vet culture there of saying "if the dog is already too old, it's better to euthanize").

I moved out at the perfect time.

alfredbaudisch,
@alfredbaudisch@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@tanepiper very sorry to hear about that. She looked like a very good girl ❤️.

And I agree with you, every second that we can make them more comfortable, it's worth everything.

alfredbaudisch,
@alfredbaudisch@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@tanepiper they are irreplaceable, but having other dogs indeed help.

When I lost my female Dachshund, Mahi, in December, the vet said "you still have Koda, he will help you go through Mahi's loss" and at first I got a bit angry with the vet - "one cannot replace another!", but she was actually right.

I think I can finally talk about this, as after 5 years, the risk of lawsuit is gone: BE CAREFUL WHEN USING IMAGES YOU FIND ONLINE EVEN IF THEY COME FROM SUPPOSEDLY PERMISSIVE LICENSES.

There's a well-structured, sophisticated worldwide network of copyright trolls that use web crawling and archiving in order to find images you post, then charge and sue you for horrendous amounts for the use of images. They have legal entities in most of Europe, South and North America. There's no escaping them.

New blog post: Demystifying multiple importance sampling

It is a simple thing that turns out to be confusing to a lot of us rendering engineers. I try to explain it in detail here with path-tracing examples!

alfredbaudisch,

@lisyarus nice surprise seeing a new post from you popping up in my RSS reader.

The math fried my brain. 🙈 Rendering math is really not for me. But nice read, as always!

Clean way to open #Twitter / #X to cross post links, without having to stumble upon any Tweet or without seeing the timeline:

  • #uBlock Origin
  • Element Picker: highlight and click the border between side menu and timeline
  • Click Create
  • Now when you open Twitter it will always be plain white
  • You can open the Compose URL (/compose/post), cross post and begone.

Empty, no timeline in sight.

If the Timeline appears again someday, just repeat the process to pick up the new CSS classes.

A screenshot of Twitter / X showing the timeline highlighted in red and a green circle in the border between the side menus and the timeline.
A screenshot of uBlock Origin dialog showing some cryptic CSS class names and a green arrow pointing to a "Create" blue button
A screenshot of Twitter / X showing the compose Tweet window and in the background it's just white, no Twitter timeline content.

alfredbaudisch,
@alfredbaudisch@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

It's possible to go further and hide the menu as well, thus hiding Notification numbers, having a completely white screen when posting.

But then the only way to access the compose modal is via the direct URL: /compose/post

Beautiful!

Now my / #X account is just a link dump account - for those like me who still want to show their followers from there with their content (4k followers for me) but do not want to interact at all with the toxic timeline/baits/bots/w.e.

A screenshot of Twitter / X "Compose" modal with a fully white screen on the background The address bar URL reads https://twitter.com/compose/post

alfredbaudisch,
@alfredbaudisch@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

How come most social-media "content" now comes down to things like this?

"THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING! IT IS GOING TO DISRUPT SOCIAL MEDIA FOREVER! 🚨🤯 Open the thread to have your mind blown with these new changes 👇🧵"

🤮 🤢 This is the kind of engagement bait that I want to erase forever from my life.

It's the kind of thing that my uBlock hack/filter allows hiding.

INDIE GAME DEV: INDIE ARCHETYPES https://www.derekyu.com/makegames/archetypes.html

"The Inventor loves building nice-looking prototypes because they're enamored with the thrill of new ideas, but they quickly lose interest once they have to expand on the idea by creating content.

They front-load projects and start polishing very early on. Most likely they have a lot of very nice-looking prototypes, first levels, test arenas laying around"

In terms of gamedev, I have 10s upon 10s of nice-looking prototypes, nice-looking mechanics and mostly important test arenas of all kinds and sizes.

That's where I have fun, and end up not finishing games. Crazy how Derek Yu nails the description perfectly.

@alfredbaudisch@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

I don't know much about Brackeys, but it seems to be a big deal that he is now covering Godot, considering the global excitement about it. It's a huge deal for the community to have a creator with such big numbers covering the engine. 🚀

The only Brackeys content that I consumed was actually indirect: it was Sebastian Lague's RPG Character modeling tutorial series: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aAO4C_8y0w8&list=PLFt_AvWsXl0f4c56CbvYi038zmCmoZ4CQ&index=2

But can Brackeys do something that @gdquest hasn't already done for the past 6 years?

alfredbaudisch,
@alfredbaudisch@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

I think I can see it: Brackeys was THE main Unity instructor. So people looking for Unity content will now drive their attention to Godot thanks to Brackeys.

GDQuest is tailored mostly to those ALREADY in Godot, and occasionally the ones looking to start gamedev.

But the reach of Brackeys is much higher to grab the ones starting out due to channel size and Unity is mainstream so people who search "how to make games with Unity" will watch Godot's content now via Brackeys.

@alienmelon great article!

As an addendum to your 1st paragraph, I also would like to see Ludum Dare also separating works between solo and teams.

The sad "enshittify everything" era we live 😢 :
"Sometimes I think I’m looking at a reality where experimentation on computers will all be a thing of the past, because the decisions driving tech are made by millionaires and wealthy CEO’s who will nickle and dime tech to death with cloud subscriptions and forcing devs into expensive storefronts."

Postman, the bloated cURL wrapper is going to have a rapper and a comedian in a conference about its bloated cURL wrapper, where the ticket costs $1195 and is already supposedly sold out.

https://www.postman.com/postcon/conference/

I mean... considering how crazy Silicon Valley went with NFTs and generative AI, this is not the worst thing to come from there.

But still... WHY do they need:

  • 2000+ employees?
  • A conference?
  • Multi-billion dollar valuation?

@yora curl is an open-source library being developed and maintained since 1998 to make only requests (like HTTP and FTP requests): https://curl.se/

If a program makes a HTTP requests there's almost a 100% chance that it uses curl under the hood. Also most programming languages that have a HTTP library also use curl under the hood.

Postman is an interface on top of curl. Nothing wrong with that, the problem is the stupid valuation for a "curl wrapper", while curl itself needs the $.

alfredbaudisch,
@alfredbaudisch@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@yora meanwhile curl struggles for funding, while postman, a bloated and slow piece of software that relies 100% on curl has a crazy valuation of like $12billion and they raised around $400M or so.

It's been just two days since I deactivated my main 14 years old Twitter account.

I decided to check my other account to find a link from an older tweet, from my indie game and the very first thing that pops up in my TL was a tweet about the bots taking over replies.

And this tweet about bots itself had bots replying to it, including a crypto scam one that pays for the corporate golden verification.

Suddenly, any regrets I had of deactivating my account are just gone.

    @psychicparrot42 people use it as a "cool kids club" tag nowadays, in order to justify irresponsible acts and inaction, but the truth it's not cool to have ADHD or be autistic. It's a fucking curse. It's a fucking nightmare to grow up autistic, it's life in hell be autistic adult (even if you grow with a good support network and mentorship like I had). It's not a cool kids free pass card. It's terrible actually. If I could I would want to be born without this shit (autism).
