I’m at a point where when I see “I asked ChatGPT…” just immediately move on.

I really don’t care what bullshit generator spouted to anyone.

I get that there’s a a pretty strong anti-capitalist undercurrent on here, but it’s still pretty messed up seeing people damn near celebrating the likely demise of people solely because of their wealth.

aleck,
@aleck@mastodon.social avatar

@jeff the level of hate towards capitalism and excessive wealth as source of all societal evil I see with Americans is hard to comprehend. Especially when looked from Eastern Europe.
It has nothing to do with capitalism per-se, just plain old corruption.

Currently I'm of the opinion that all of the Vision Pro product shots look better without the badly-3D-rendered face on the front. I think this instance of Apple's attempt to humanize the device does the opposite — an uncanny valley face is so much worse than no face at all. I don't know if they will be able to bridge that gap before launch w/ their Persona tech, but you're talking about an M2 and a hasty 3D facial scan; there's only so much better you can make this w/ the horsepower you've got

@stroughtonsmith those stupid-ass fakes look nothing like renders Apple showed at the event. They did not look strange to me at all.

Is there a way to somehow export all the Q&A from #WWDC23 slack channels..?

aleck,
@aleck@mastodon.social avatar

@phranck did you do it manually..?

SwiftData handles Swift-only types like structs and enums through Codable encode/decode. This sounds rather brute-force method which I don't see allowing query flexibility. Say write a fetch-request predicate for values equal to particular enum case.

Although I don't know what NSCompositeAttributeDescription is, could be a new thing since it isn’t mentioned anywhere here

https://developer.apple.com/documentation/coredata/nspropertydescription

Which new API or change to an existing API has you the most excited this year?

aleck,
@aleck@mastodon.social avatar

@jeff @simonbs if this works as promised, I might actually start using SwiftUI.

aleck, to random
@aleck@mastodon.social avatar

It seems SwiftData is entirely built on top of Core Data including objects being non-thread-safe. So it's not simply build on top of Core Data persistence layer; it's built on top of Core Data full hierarchy, including ManagedObjectContexts.

I might not have properly understood this particular Q&A. data-frameworks activity in the Slack is super interesting.

Can you watch the WWDC videos in the Developer app at 2x? I can't seem to figure out how to speed them up (I managed to do so on the web and on iOS, but not on the Mac).

aleck,
@aleck@mastodon.social avatar

@simonbs @chris @_inside or you download all the videos using a script and use a proper video player ;)

Swift Macros seem amazing and really speak to me as a programming nerd. But if I empathize with beginning programmers even for a second, I'm horrified. Swift has spiraled inexorably into impossible to understand territory. I used to defend it as a beginner's language but it's harder and harder to do so.

aleck,
@aleck@mastodon.social avatar

@danielpunkass Apple is on mission to hide as much boilerplate as possible. It’s been that way since SwiftUI took over, with view builders and property wrappers and observing and now macros.

When you know what the thing does, you love it. When you are just trying to learn, it’s a bottomless pit.

I am somewhat scared to dive into @model

Easily my number one issue with SwiftUI.

I can handle the lack of flexibility for certain tasks and holes in functionality. That is slowly being addressed with each release and, in time, should be a non-issue.

But I still get weird, esoteric compiler errors far away from where actual problems exist with descriptions that provide no clue as to the cause.

The only fix is frequently commenting out tons of view code and re-adding it until I see what line breaks things. https://mastodon.social/@nicklockwood/110428085462767067

aleck,
@aleck@mastodon.social avatar

@jeff the feature set of both Swift and SwiftUI has grown way beyond Xcode/LLVM/LLDB capabilities. I don’t use SwiftUI anywhere and still get completely bogus error messages, code completion stops working etc.
I fear they now need to pull the break for a year and just work on tooling. I see zero indication that will ever happen.

Apple App Store review is still a shit show. It will likely be forever.

But hey, they don’t care. They continue paying for research and survey how indie dev market is healthier than ever. It’s all great. https://mjtsai.com/blog/2023/05/09/app-store-rules-regarding-trials/

This morning, 14yo kid entered his primary school in #Belgrade and killed the guard at the entrance and then proceeded to shoot at kids and his history teacher. 8 kids died, several more severely injured. In just 5 mins. All done in cold blood, after apparently a month of preparation to do just that.

It’s unspeakable tragedy that I don’t remember happening here, despite the wars in the 90s.

I’m confused a bit by all the derision towards what Humane is doing, product unseen. Maybe my following group is too jaded but with rare exceptions it feels like most people are cheering for their failure. Not sure product/company warrants that.

aleck,
@aleck@mastodon.social avatar

@jeff I feel it’s more the people than the product (of which we have not seen much, I believe).

That’s why I used word “jaded” — I often wonder how would people today react to the kind of grandiose statements Jobs made back in 80s. Reading the Archive and imagining things like that said today is rather fun exercise.
