To improve accessibility, Android 15 is adding a new method to enable screen magnification: tapping the screen twice with two fingers.

More details plus a demo can be found in this article I wrote: https://www.androidauthority.com/android-15-screen-magnification-3440805/

The first Android 15 beta is HERE! Android 15 Beta 1 is rolling out today to users enrolled in the Android beta program. Supported devices include the Pixel 6 and newer, as well as the Pixel Tablet and Pixel Fold.

Here’s what’s new in Android 15 Beta 1, according to Google:

Newest #Pachli Current makes it easier to manage tabs.

1.A timeline not in a tab has a new "Add to tab" menu / toolbar button
2. A timeline in a tab has a new "Remove tab" menu
3. Viewing tabs shows a new "Manage tabs" menu, a shortcut to Account preferences > Tabs

"Trending" tabs (hashtags, links, posts) have new icons instead of sharing an icon.

When you connect a physical keyboard to your device in Android 14 QPR3 Beta 2, you can now enable two new accessibility options: "sticky keys" and "bounce keys".

Sticky keys make it easier to enter keyboard shortcuts in quick succession. When you press a modifier key like Ctrl or Alt with sticky keys enabled, it'll stay pressed so you don't have to hold it down while pressing other keys.

Bounce keys lets the system ignore rapid, repeated presses of the same key.

MishaalRahman,
@MishaalRahman@androiddev.social avatar

These two accessibility options will soon be joined by a third "slow keys" option in a future release.

Google is upgrading TTS (text-to-speech) on smartwatches running Wear OS 4 to be faster and more reliable. This can be helpful for things like accessibility services, coaching cues in exercise apps, navigation cues, and reading aloud alerts through the speaker or connected headphones.

Google's new TTS engine for Wear OS 4 uses "decreased prosody ML models" to enable faster synthesis on smartwatches.

MishaalRahman,
@MishaalRahman@androiddev.social avatar

By default, the Wear OS TTS supports English, Spanish, French, Italian, German, Japanese, and Mandarin Chinese, but OEMs can preload a different set of languages.

For developers, the TTS APIs remain the same, though it's worth noting that it takes about 10 seconds for the synthesis engine to be ready after the user interacts with it for the first time following a device boot. If you want it to be ready immediately, you can pre-warm the TTS engine before any synthesis requests come in.

New article on Accessible Android: Sorry Google, but Geo-Restricting TalkBack’s Beta Testing Is Not the Right Decision https://accessibleandroid.com/sorry-google-but-geo-restricting-talkbacks-beta-testing-is-not-the-right-decision/

simon,

@accessibleandroid I saw some email threads on the eyes-free group. It's hard not to wonder if that group is the reason we can't have nice things.
Not that anything really excuses Google at this point. But I've said my piece on that.

nikosdemetriou,

@accessibleandroid Couldn't agree more. This is one of the reasons I switched to ios.

@accessibleandroid I hate that. I cannot see any reason for it.
TalkBack should not be a product as such, it should be a system service.

New article on Accessible Android: The Trials and Tribulations of Setting Up Android Phones for Non-English Speakers in 2024: Google and Samsung are the Typical Culprits https://accessibleandroid.com/the-trials-and-tribulations-of-setting-up-android-phones-for-non-english-speakers-in-2024-google-and-samsung-are-the-typical-culprits/ #Android #Google #Samsung #a11y

simon,

@accessibleandroid I was in the Philippines recently, and gave away a Nokia phone that was purchased in Canada. When I reset it, it somehow remembered my region and changed the language. I had to call Aira, figure out how to close the Talkback tutorial (with non-english text), figure out how to change the language back to English and then set up the phone. It is so discouraging that Google has allowed such a showstopper of a bug to persist for this long. Even having Talkback default to an English voice when it can't speak the language would be better than having no Tts at all. Yes, people would still complain and for good reason, but at least they'd be able to navigate their phone. I did not try putting a SIM card with mobile data in the phone; I wasn't aware that was a solution. This article touches on a lot of good points—particularly, the lack of testing outside the US is a very big problem. Android is much more popular in other countries, so I imagine Google is only hearing from a tiny fraction of blind Android users, and at least 90% of them are probably native English speakers. At this point, it feels like there is a lot of good work happening with Google accessibility—talkback itself is nothing to sneeze at—but some really significant areas feel very neglected. I would love to be able to pick up an Android phone and say "Yes, this is perfect, I'm going to switch to this full time. Screw Apple." And I'd love to be able to recommend Android to everyone I know, as a friend or as a tech trainer/advisor. But I can't do that yet, and things like this are a really good example of why. I hope this gets better and I sincerely hope my country of residence won't stop me from being able to provide valuable feedback for much longer. Google has a history of regional gatekeeping for no apparent reason. If this is present in the accessibility space, I feel like I have no choice but to see that as a major strike against them.

TalkBack 14.1 comes with image descriptions (which are actually surprisingly accurate from my limited testing), spell check while using the Braille keyboard, automatic scrolling for Braille displays (with a customizable speed), and (most surprisingly to me), new haptics! I'm not convinced I like them yet, just because text elements don't appear to have a vibration, but it actually feels like Voice Assistant or VoiceOver now!
