Hey, ; Swanye depends Elixir and MariaDB but mix requires =make= and =gcc-toolchain= and also uses =inotify-tools= and one of the dep.s needs =openssl=.

I can install all of these and run but, naturally, it'd be nicer to box these off. I'd imagine this is a use-case for Guix Shell, right?

But, if I do that, I imagine I'll run into trouble when trying to work out of Emacs since it (using packages in my home profile) won't be aware of any packages in the shell; is this accurate?

I think there's a real advantage in software written by people, rather than corporations, and I love that so many Fediverse projects are that.

The downside, however, is that corporations can, naturally, work faster and /all the features I wanted to implement because Tumblr didn't have them are getting implemented by Tumblr/!

(notifications, now, mark if they're by a mutual and I'd been thinking of maybe implementing something like that; not the biggest deal but, still…)

Whatever happened to #tumblr implementing #ActivityPub? I know these things take time but have they said anything since last November?

@squizzleflip

As far as I'm aware, https://www.tumblr.com/labs/719662169866829824/labs-is-back is the only thing I've seen (recently).

They mention, "We’re going to be prototyping ideas, some that may feel very familiar and natural if you use Tumblr and other similar platforms every day, and some that feel totally alien and weird to us as heavy Tumblr users," which – presumably – may include federation.

@squizzleflip

Heh, certainly possible. The whole thing super smacked of jumping on the hype-train (I thought), like when a bunch of companies announced they were looking into Blockchain when crypto. was at its popularity height (and then none of them did it or shuttered what they'd worked on, later).

The only thing that gave any credence was Automatic and there was a dev. on here who worked for Tumblr who was giving her fellow dev.s' thoughts on ActivityPub and their implementing it.

What ever happened to the #Tumblr #ActivityPub integration?

Whatever happened to #Tumblr 's #ActivityPub integration plans?
Has Tumblr commented on it recently? #Fediverse #Mastodon

On the one hand – local's all setup, again.

One of the advantages of taking a break, though, is that everything's sort of new so I can get an idea of what it might be like for someone running the project for the first time.

Also, you catch really silly bugs you missed, the first time. For example, – like many webbed sites – Swanye requires users to verify their E-mail.

Except…login never checked whether that verification had happened, by the user. Fixed that…

After switching to Calckey, I realize how much I missed one nice feature of Tumblr that is absent on Mastodon: a dedicated section for hashtags at the bottom of a post without worrying about whether they eat up characters and without the hashtags making the post harder to read.

Swanye,
@Swanye@fosstodon.org avatar

@183231bcb

Yeah; I may be biased (Xanga was the height of social media, for me) but I've always preferred a designated section, for tags.

In case it's helpful any, I'm planning for the federated Tumblr alternative I'm working on to have its own tag section and allow you to do tags in the post itself (for those used to it from Masto/Twitter); that way either system could work.

free-market, just like openweb, without any communal regulation or federating governance, welcomes colonial and capitalist incursions into communal safe spaces.

this is also the difference, i suppose, between FOSS and OSS.

While I've been quiet on here for half a year (so maybe it hasn't seemed like that long of a silence but it /feels/ like it's been a year), just wanted to reassure everyone this project is still in motion.

Regardless of how long it takes me to work on this, I (naturally) am very attached to this project (and, even if I wasn't, we deserve to have social media we own…) and want to see it continue developing.

Unfortunately, more health issues at home arose and my ability and the time I

Swanye,
@Swanye@fosstodon.org avatar

I had to focus on this evaporated.

Future development, going forward, may be slow but, as I mentioned, I really love this project and want to keep developing it.

So I mostly wanted to give a heads up so people knew what was going on; I may try to just post more of passing thoughts here, rather than limit things strictly to development updates, just so this account is easier for people to engage with.

Swanye,
@Swanye@fosstodon.org avatar

I always was disappointed when the accounts of projects I was excited about went dark so I'll try to keep that from happening, even with a lack of updates.

I had to reinstall my computer, yet again, so I'm going to be trying to get my dev. setup up and running once more, in the next few days. Hopefully, I should be able to get some further progress done, soon.

Swanye,
@Swanye@fosstodon.org avatar

@edendestroyer

I am! At least, as much as I'm able to with my current situation. Like I mentioned, development might be a tad slower but I've missed working on it and I think I can make good progress when I have lulls in the week.

Hoping to get the dev. environment resetup, this weekend.

@Swanye this is gonna sound weird but, I wanna use swanye as a sandbox for me to practice programming, is there a more comprehensive/beginner friendly way to set up swanye, having a hard time setting up the phoenix/elixr network

Swanye,
@Swanye@fosstodon.org avatar

@Philmore98

Not at all weird; it's how many get further into programming, messing around with some tech.

Where are you getting stuck? I will say that setting up something locally is far easier as you don't have to mess around with hosting, any, but it does have the limit that you can't interface with other servers as your server needs to be discoverable for messages to be sent to it.

Swanye, especially being still in alpha, may not be the best for practicing but there's plenty that can be

Swanye,
@Swanye@fosstodon.org avatar

@Philmore98

learned, still (especially if you're only setting up locally).

Just let me know and I'll try to fill in as best as I can where the README failed.

Swanye,
@Swanye@fosstodon.org avatar

@Philmore98

Sorry about the late reply.

I dunno if you were still interested in this but I largely exclusively use Jami these days, if that works alright for you. I've used Skype and Google's Duo (I think) before, as well. I just don't have a Discord (or account) any, I'm afraid.

Swanye,
@Swanye@fosstodon.org avatar

@Philmore98

The account's just "swanye"; I think you should be able to just search for that. Lemme know if that doesn't work.

Swanye, to tumblr
@Swanye@fosstodon.org avatar

I've tried avoiding talking about directly (though there was far less reason to do so, before recently).

Making any project a foil to another existing work will always define it in terms of that other work and, I think, comes off as a waste of everyone else's time.

But I've been seeing a lot of excitement around Tumblr adding and it has me…Concerned™.

Not due to the size of an instance this would add to the network (though it's a fair concern) nor due to possibly making

Swanye,
@Swanye@fosstodon.org avatar

federated posts able to, possibly, never die the way Tumblr reblogs cannot (another /very/ valid concern) nor even that I'm currently working on a federated clone, already (like, c'mon; rude).

If we stop and think about what is (in the context of Twitter collapsing, recently; this applies to other Fediverse projects, as well), it's…incredible, right?

Like, it's not just a microblogging platform with no ad.s and no algorithms that has managed to transplant a good chunk of

Swanye,
@Swanye@fosstodon.org avatar

's userbase, recently.

It's software you can run yourself, that requires that – if you want to use or modify it – you have to give it back and make it available for others to be able to use or modify it: even if you never distribute it and only ever run it on your own servers.

Again: that is /incredible/.

Don't like, entirely, how the software works? and can relate; so they modified things and run their own versions.

It's not even that 's owned by a

Swanye,
@Swanye@fosstodon.org avatar

corporation (though that /is/ relevant) but we've started developing federated software that we, collectively, can own with no binding need for corporate reliance and…we're already discussing trading that away?

Like, – unless #Tumblr open-sources, /first/ (and I mean #AGPL or equivalent; not even just #GPL), and I'm able to run it on my own server – going to #Tumblr or recommending people to them is just losing the ownership you would otherwise have with a #PeerTube, #GoToSocial, or #BookWyrm.
