  • Steve98052,

There's a reason I use Paint Shop Pro instead of Photoshop.

Sometimes I even use Inkscape, even though it's meant for vector drawings rather than raster image editing.

It's funny how recognizing AI art today is so much like rules in folklore for recognizing the fae:

    • Count fingers, toes, knuckles, teeth.
    • Look at the shadows.
    • And under no circumstances should you ever make deals with their kind.

Harlan Ellison: listen up you chucklefucks
Ellison: it only happens once in a lifetime that an author emerges fully formed like athena from the forehead of zeus
Ellison: tonight you are going to hear from such an author
Ellison: a bold new truth teller who will put you all to shame
    Ellison: a man named
    Ellison: piers anthony

    Steve98052,

@bitterkarella I did a bunch of web searching to figure out the context.

My results, for others wondering about this:

    1. Piers Anthony did in fact write a short story along these lines.

    2. Harlan Ellison was the editor of the anthology that first published the story.

    3. Anthony apparently wrote it to denounce factory farming.

    4. I was not a fan of Anthony, and now I am less a fan.

The Andressen manifesto is the gift that keeps giving because it inspires writing like this.

"The techno-optimist tribe gives off the distinct impression of people who have been so ridiculously rich for so long that they’ve just completely lost the plot about how the real world works. To be fair, this is an apt description of most of Silicon Valley."

    https://gizmodo.com/marc-andreessen-is-wrong-about-everything-1850934367

    Steve98052,

    @fraying
    As the article says:
"The techno-optimists are morons that don’t know dick about how the real world works"

Andreessen, it seems, is peak techno-moron.☆

At least Bezos is too busy selling us stuff for so cheap that we don't need to shop anywhere else$ to write delusional manifestos like this article describes.

☆ Not really. Musk is peak techno-moron.
$ And then raising prices when we can't buy it anywhere else.

  • Steve98052,

@robindlaws On-line the choices are simple: Georgia for headers and Verdana for body text.

For print it's more complicated. I'm partial to Sitka, but it seems a bit too formal for a lot of things.

For science fiction gaming, one obvious choice is Optima for headings and Univers for body text, or more likely, free look-alike fonts. Science fiction gamers who are also #font nerds will understand.

For other writing, it's a deep dive into font browsing.

@robindlaws I hope this leads to security advances -- in particular, businesses taking their security seriously. But I'd still be inclined to bet on complacency.

For 23 years, Russians haven't had a taste of any conceivable alternative to Putin. They got one today. (They seem to love Prigozhin in Rostov.) Incidentally, analysts have warned for as long that the person who eventually replaces Putin might be worse. Well well.

    Steve98052,

@kevinrothrock Prigozhin is almost certainly worse. But maybe if he overthrows Putin he'll have enough trouble with the rich people affected by sanctions that he'll call off the war.

No, he seems to want the war. Maybe he'll overthrow Putin and then be overthrown by someone who is only interested in exploiting Russia, not continuing the war.
