I think you’re overselling Perfect Memory a fair bit here. Just because you can perfectly recall something you’ve seen, doesn’t necessarily mean you know how to use it. E.g. just because you’ve memorised a manual on working a forklift, doesn’t mean you’re suddenly qualified to work as a forklift operator.

Languages, especially non-Latin based languages, require a whole different way of thinking about things that you won’t get from pure memory.

How Pirates Thwarted America’s Plan to Go Metric (psnaudus.medium.com)

In the late 1700s, Thomas Jefferson wanted the United States to adopt a unified system of measurement and saw the metric system as the best solution. However, a pirate attack in the Caribbean disrupted these plans. Joseph Dombey, a French scientist carrying a kilogram and meter stick to demonstrate the metric system, was...

One thing I find humourous is the term ‘US Customary’ - I’ve only come across it recently; to most of the world they’re Imperial units, which is ironic given the nature of how the USA came about.

The way the whole proposition has been framed (rightly or wrongly) is it’s a pet-project for Albo, and comes across again as white folks telling Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander peoples "this’ll be good for you, and it’ll work this time ;) "

At the moment I don’t see how the voice proposal is any different to the plethora of government agencies and outreach groups that have ultimately failed to make a difference over the years. If the referendum was actually two questions - constitutional recognition for Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander people, and a second one on the voice, there would probably be less resistance; I would hazard a guess that most people in the ‘No’ camp (except the actual racists) don’t have issues with constitutional recognition per se, but with the lack of detail around the Voice itself.

What do you mean by your ‘vote is worth twice that of someone who it is supposed to be benefiting’?

Is that in reference to the ‘double-majority’, where NT and ACT don’t count for the ‘majority of States’ count (because a large number of Aboriginal and Torrest Strait islander people live in the NT)?

Added core support for deep links like liftoff://lemmy.world/c/liftoff (shocklateboy92)

I find this idea really cool (and intriguing) - though can’t help but feel it’s a bit limited - it’d be cool if all the lemmy app developers could come up with a common scheme for lemmy links as an unofficial ‘standard’ so the same ‘deep’ link could be used across all apps (where compatible)

One thing that’s I find a bit frustrating (speaking as a lemming browsing from another instance) is that a lot of the posted Kbin links posted just send me to a login page instead. Given the federated nature of the platforms, it feels a bit off to get login-walled, but I’m not sure if there’s anything that can be done given the differences between lemmy and kbin.

If it helps, this post displays fine, however this other one throws me to a login screen - not sure if there’s a difference in the URL structure, or the magazines themselves are more restricted in some manner.

That actually looked pretty neat - in Winter I tend to just hunker down and stop looking out for events, which is a shame since this looked right up my alley - will have to try and remember it for next year!

The problem that the government faces is that the link to Woden was largely done as a way to mollify southsiders critical of the plan. If they about-faced and extended to Belco first, there’d probably be riots.

I heard someone approached Christian with that idea already, but he is wasn’t really interested.

Setting up the whole ecosystem is hard - most of the app developers are very good with front-end and user experience, but setting up a robust, scalable backed is a completely different skill set.

I'm in a similar vein, and as of yet I've still yet to hear a convincing argument as to why this body is different from the multitude of other advisory bodies the government has, and will continue to soundly ignore, or why a well-funded statutory body can't achieve the same role.

Racists will claim anything other than a 100% yes vote as a 'win' so don't let their backwardsness stake a claim in your mind.

In the case of Blizzard, this already happened when it got bought out by Activision. Microsoft could hardly do worse.

Paradoxvoid,
@Paradoxvoid@aussie.zone avatar

Except Microsoft is in a distant third place in the gaming market - Sony has had the crown for that for years, and has actually used its market position in the past to make things worse for competitors and for gamers in general.

One cool thing (that not everyone immediately groks) is that each lightroot corresponds to a shrine on the surface (and vice versa) - really useful if you're looking for some out-of-the-way shrines, and you've done some mapping of the area in the depths already.

I don't think the fairy fountains correspond to anything, but the 'Spring of Courage/Power/Wisdom' and the Great Mother Goddess Statue in the forgotten temple all correspond to Bargainer statue locations.

Why would reddit want to charge the app developers instead of the users?

This is something I can’t seem to figure out. Let’s just assume that 3rd party apps are the reason reddit is losing money. So, it would make sense that reddit wants to start charging for their API access. But why is the burden on the apps and not the users?

Paradoxvoid,
@Paradoxvoid@aussie.zone avatar

Because it was never actually about the ‘cost’ of the API. The plethora of tracking data they get if they convince people to use the official app is worth far more than a small recurring fee to users.

To me, the best approach for base game, has always been to tackle it similar to Zelda BOTW/TOTK - you should just wander around until you find something interesting and then hang around and see what events might pop up. It's not a very quest-driven experience similar to other MMOs and requires a bit of a different mindset.
