I strongly advise those who hold Anti-Capitalist principles to think deeply about how they participate in manufactured divisive discourse. So much of this is content crafted to advance the goal of colonizing your mind and time. The more you become entrenched the more revenue they generate off your outrage and participation. Exercise good discernment.

Someone asked me recently about the ability to "Read the Room" and whether or not this was a skill that can be developed. I certainly believe it is a skill and can be cultivated. Perhaps the most impactful maxim which can guide us in this regard was taught to me by a Jedi Knight who went by the name Zenchi from the Temple of the Jedi Order. He told me, "Learn to Observe without needing to React."

The Internet, particularly the social media algorithm demon, has created an incentive not just to React to everything, but to Observe specifically to React. In this way we often bias our interpretation of that which we observe with a skew towards the least charitable interpretation so that our reaction can be as extreme as possible.

To counteract this and hone this skill of reading the room, we can practice several behaviors that will improve our lives.

First, be the last person to speak in an interaction. When you allow everyone else to have their say, it gives you a chance to examine their perspectives and gauge their intentions.

Second, questions are better than statements. The cultivation of curiosity leads to more robust conversations. A statement can often be viewed as dismissive or ultimate in nature, sometimes leaving a conversation partner feeling as though there's nothing left to say. Curiosity, by contrast, is almost always viewed as an invitation to continue discourse.

Third, speak in a way that is pleasant. We've been taught to rely on flippancy and sarcasm in modern discourse as we assume the intentions of others or deliberately misconstrue them to make ourselves look superior. By engaging with someone in a pleasant way, we can disarm hostility. Even if others fail to uphold this standard, we will still maintain our own peace which is of a value beyond measure.

A morning cup of tea. Early Grey, hot, for those who want to know. Forgive the nail polish on the table, I have two young daughters and also a friend who was transitioning while staying with me for a couple months who were experimenting with it.

Has anyone heard anything from Kthoniaa the Orphic witch lately?

I miss interacting with them. They always had something interesting on their mind.

@Malleus I thought I was the only one feeling this way! I noticed fae hadn't posted anything lately and saw that neither the Pagan+ account of the reported main account had seen any activity for a while.

@Crazypedia well, it was fun while it lasted, but sounds like I'll be catching a ban if that's the case.

@Crazypedia well if you're looking at a situation that requires transparency in labelling, then that's not an issue because I have always tagged such shared content as being created in collaboration with an AI Tool.

Seeing all these arguments on til tok about what "the gods" think about personal relationships, politics, etc. and I'm just thinking: there's more than one god! The point of polytheism is that there are more than one of them. If they all felt the same way about everything what would be the point of polytheism?

Julian_Invictus,
@Julian_Invictus@pagan.plus avatar

@tierfreund the whole rejection of a personal relationship with the divine in some parts of Western Polytheism is a notion that I don't comprehend.

Reminder that US adult literacy is at 79%.

The threshold for literacy is a 4th grade reading level, which means that they passed the 3rd grade. (9-10 years old)
So arguing with, or trying to correct some people who have fallen for disinformation will not help, because they can’t understand you, or they can't check the sources.

The first step in combatting disinformation is teaching people how to read. How? Well, most free adult literacy programs are run by libraries, so donate to your local library!

@Cat_LeFey weird it's almost like this was some kind of deliberate long-term plan or something, but you know THAT'S CRAZY TALK.

First day back in my usual routine and I am so glad to be at it again. Winter Break was a full relaxation of discipline, and towards the end I was starting to feel a bit miserable about it. I have to keep telling myself it was okay.

    Also, I promise playing Pokemon isn't ALL I'm doing. The Flowering Wand is setting some other thoughts up to percolate and so the walnut thing is competing for brain time.

    Julian_Invictus,
    @Julian_Invictus@pagan.plus avatar

    @ravensong92 I am SO here for all the Pokemon playing, though. I sorta wish I had recorded my playthrough of Scarlet here on Mastodon. I bought the wrong DLC bundle earlier in the year, so my wife and I traded carts over the Winter Break and beat the Main Story just yesterday. I kept all the pictures, though.

    @ravensong92 you're lucky because in Gold Version there's no Flamethrower Move Tutor who can teach it to Arcanine, as Growlithe doesn't learn it naturally until L50.

    I've enjoyed this Winter Break where my discipline was allowed to fully relax and my routine was replaced with long days of gaming with my family playing Pokemon Scarlet, Halo, and Palia. We celebrated my late brother's birthday on the 4th. The day is evolving rather spectacularly into the Feast Day of Uncle Ryan. Despite being a heavy reminder of our loss as a family, the day was spent rather joyously engaging in things he loved while alive.

    All that being said, I am so eager to return to my regular schedule and routine come Monday. Last week I began reeling myself back into nutritional discipline, and my body is ready to start walking every day.

    Julian_Invictus,
    @Julian_Invictus@pagan.plus avatar

    It's a really strange, almost out of body, feeling to see how the rest of my family and brother's friends spent his birthday mourning his loss and feeling deep sorrow. The whole thing was so opposite to the vibe of my household. Certainly we all miss him, but it really feels like we're also the only ones who celebrate him. We were cuddled up watching a Sonic Movie Double Feature, playing Chess on his old chess board, and reading his Calvin & Hobbes comics aloud for an hour. I made his signature dish for dinner and we had a Reese's Ice Cream Cake for desert. The first piece was left upon our home shrine to him.

    Currently making some pretty great strides in my reading goal: I'm already 60-ish pages into The Flowering Wand, which is an excellent read so far.

    Recently started up a Pokemon Crystal playthrough since I hit a wall in the Emerald game at the 5th gym. That Slaking with Facade is ludicrous.

    Julian_Invictus,
    @Julian_Invictus@pagan.plus avatar

    @ravensong92 I actually never got the chance to play Crystal proper, as I bought Gold Version and my mother wouldn't deign to purchase Crystal like she had Yellow Version in Gen 1 following my copy of Red. That said, I do have a copy on my 3DS which I have been meaning to pick up.

    I've played a role in the spiritual journey of several people in my life, and I always treat my time in that role with a lot of solemnity and patience. Other people, including at least one I was involved with helping grow, just sort of make it about themselves and push people at a pace that isn't what they're ready for. That's always very difficult to see happen.
