Looking for a CLI tool to snapshot a directory (tree)… and then compare current state of that tree to a snapshot.

(Can't use git. Diffing ls -laR is too noisy…)

This has to be a pre-existing thing surely.

GeekAndDad,
@GeekAndDad@mastodon.social avatar

@schwa interesting that this isn’t something simple. Tried ls with more parameters piped though awk to strip stuff I don’t care about that ls -l always puts in there (perms, user, etc) but yah, diffing that is still too noisy. Was thinking of bbdiff of ls + awk output, but I can see that’s not what you’re looking for either.

mtree is kind of interesting, but not quite it.

@schwa Last modified time being different/newer wasn’t a sufficient flag for the-file-was-modified ?

GeekAndDad,
@GeekAndDad@mastodon.social avatar

@schwa Makes sense. Thanks.

For my simple tests they seemed adequate but I guess it’s not hard to think up cases where it wouldn’t be sufficient (your xattrs being a great one).

@schwa Or track moved files according to that post someone shared in answer to your query (which was good).

Cool stuff!

Weird that Numbers wont open a 300MB CSV file.

@schwa Did you crash it?! Or did it just say “too big! Sorry Charlie!”?

Little Snitch had a big UI upgrade somewhat recently and I'm running it again after many years of being away…

And holy fuck running VS Code with Little Snitch on and oh boy I probably need to put some tape on my webcams.

I wish my robot vacuum was half as good at sucking up dirt as it was stray USB cords. 🧐

GeekAndDad,
@GeekAndDad@mastodon.social avatar

@gedeonm 😂 A friend recently got an iRobot one from a friend of his for parts with the comment, “it’s broken. Doesn’t suck up anything any more.” Turns out it was just super clogged up and badly needed to be cleaned. Works fine once that was done (took a lot of disassembly). Might be worth checking yours?

GeekAndDad,
@GeekAndDad@mastodon.social avatar

@gedeonm :) In this case it was pet hair jammed all in the wheels and up in the mechanism. Definitely a bit of disassembly required but transformed from non-functional to Works! :)

This year’s weight-loss journey. About 10lb in 10 weeks. I’m at least 40lbs overweight. But frankly I’ll take anything I can get.

You can totally spot the Mexico trip in the data though.

@schwa Wish my gain chart looked like that in reverse! Great progress. A pound a week is challenging. I did well for a while and then plateaued. Sank a few pounds from there and am now stuck, apparently. :-/

GeekAndDad,
@GeekAndDad@mastodon.social avatar

@schwa I also have a focus part of my chart that is insanely great…and then there’s the rest of it :)

So it goes!

It seems like day after day far right causes are advanced in every sector of our society. Some days it saps my hope for the future. Critical issues like voting rights, reproductive rights, freedom of speech, adherence to the rule of law, support for democracy here and around the globe all are under threat from Republicans here at home.

In all of these cases (& many more) seemingly the only way to fight back is to vote. The problem is the right has no plans to abide by the results. It’s scary.

GeekAndDad,
@GeekAndDad@mastodon.social avatar

@gedeonm Can definitely volunteer or donate to get out the vote efforts and for candidates (remote phone banking, post card writing, etc)

Tesla has texted or called me at least 10 times in the last month to offer incentives if I lease a new car with them after my Model Y ends at the start of May. They are quite litterally desperate.

If I chose to re-up with them I could get quite a deal. I’ve told their reps multiple times I won’t support Tesla as along as Elon Musk is the CEO of the company. Gotta wonder how long Tesla shareholders will put up with him in charge. https://mastodon.online/@electrek/112201815082910986

@gedeonm Almost worth buying shares of stock to vote against this :) (probably too late though).

I told ChatGPT to make a graphviz file from the intra-target dependencies of my (overly complex) Package.swift

It seems to do a good job.

Do i trust it without validation/ Hell no.

At my latest competition I booked a 29.5s time for solving a Rubik's Cube. The judge at my station said "Wow", not because it was an amazing time, but because they never expected a random old dude to score it. Defying expectations, FTW. https://www.worldcubeassociation.org/persons/2023JALK02

@jonschwenn @danielpunkass “3x3 cube Blindfolded”?!!!

GeekAndDad,
@GeekAndDad@mastodon.social avatar

@danielpunkass @jonschwenn Ah, so you get to look at the cube first and then put on the blindfold and solve it. I was trying to imagine tactile faces instead of colors or something like that. Impressive either way!
