Climate specialist with ACCAP/IARC at UAF, highlighting Alaska climate, environment & Indigenous cultures. Opinions are my own. I've been fascinated by #Arctic & #boreal #weather, #climate and #cultures for more than 50 years. I've worked as a weather & climate professional in private, public & academic spheres. I've been fortunate to live most of my life in Lower Tanana #Dene country near Fairbanks, #Alaska. Also, I have a big interest in Alaska Indigenous languages.

Fairbanks Airport up to 50F (10.0C) late Friday afternoon. Mildest day since September 30th and the first time it's reached 50F in March since 2019. #akwx #weather #Alaska #Spring2024 @CarrieinFbx @anisian @tania @mivox @leahwrenn @debmcqueen @Climatologist49

@leahwrenn @CarrieinFbx @anisian @tania @mivox @debmcqueen @Climatologist49 I was behind a person at the PO in shorts and flip-flops. Given the state of most parking lots, flip-flops seemed like a singularly bad idea, but then what do I know.

Updated Winter (December through February) change of the average temperature over the past 50 years in and around the Arctic, data from ERA5 courtesy of ECMWF/Copernicus. The huge increase in average temperature east & southeast of Svalbard is due to sea ice loss. The cooling over central and eastern Siberia isn't large but covers a significant area. #Arctic #ClimateChange #Climate #Winter

Bering Sea ice extent is now at or very close to the seasonal maximum in NSIDC data. The pack ice edge is not far northeast of St. Paul Island in Pribilof Islands. However, the cold north wind pattern is ending and sustained south to southeast winds and much milder temperatures will spread over the central Bering Sea early this week, pushing the ice edge back north. #akwx #Arctic #SeaIce

Ketchikan and Petersburg Saturday both reported a high temperature 56F (13.3C) and both are new records for March 16. Previous Ketchikan record of 55F (12.8C) set in 1966, previous Petersburg record 52F (11.1C) in 1988. Alaska high temp for Saturday will likely be 63F at Klawock. #akwx #Climate

Even if pi day is a fake holiday derived by mathematicians to sell more math, it's still a good day to promote the integration of the humble PA Dutch shoofly pie. But remember, if you don't favor wet bottom, we can't be friends.😉

Dallas Seavey is the first team out of White Mountain in Iditarod 52. It will be a cold run to the finish line on Front Street in Nome, with northeast winds and blowing snow across the Tokpok Hills to Safety. But, as the saying goes, it's been much worse. All but four teams are now to the coast. #Iditarod2024 #Iditarod #akwx #Spring2024 #Nome

6:00AM: 44F, cloudy.

We're bracing for that "plume of moisture" that's coming. Our special weather statement extends into NEXT Tuesday.

A week of rain, heavy at times.

Bring it!

@SilverSalmonAK back in the day, before the phrase “atmospheric rivers” was coined, the jargon term was “moisture plumes”.

icymi I’d like to establish a new church, The 10,000 Year Church of Love and Space. Book-based religions have real staying power, so it makes sense to create one with the goal of maintaining a 10,000 year old technologically advanced civilization so that we can learn to explore space and actually eventually see what’s out there. Obviously to last this long we will have to reorient around healing and sustaining the miracle of our life-giving planet Earth, so that’s the central theme of our church

AlaskaWx,
@AlaskaWx@alaskan.social avatar

@seachanger When I was part of UU back in the day we had a standing group to explore/discuss these kind of ideas.

AlaskaWx,
@AlaskaWx@alaskan.social avatar

@esnyder @seachanger Depends on the specific UU congregation. My sense is US West Coast/Alaska don’t have much of that at all, especially compared to e.g. New England.

@ai6yr Nearly all of these are at community airports and so are in valleys, though valleys are at moderately high elevations in the Yukon and northern BC. The highest elevation site plotted here are Dease Lake, BC at 2680 ft MSL, Whitehorse, YT at 2300 ft MSL and Anaktuvuk Pass, AK at 2100 ft MSL. All the near coastal sites are within a couple hundred feet of sea level.

Dene beadwork is world renowned for good reason.

natl’êdz "beads"
natl’êdz nihkón’n "shiny beads"
natl’êdz nih’ées I’m sewing with beads
ch’ink’ón’ "dentalium necklace"

PS: if you're like me, this pix, showing beautiful beadwork by Maggie Roach (Upper Tanana Dene) brings on powerful sensory memory: just looking at this triggers the vivid smell of smoked moose hide.

Our home weather station is getting old and decrepit. What's a good one that works well in Fairbanks and preferably has a temperature range that goes below -40?

AlaskaWx,
@AlaskaWx@alaskan.social avatar

@leepetersen Almost none of the consumer grade weather stations report temperatures lower than -40F, but @anisian might know if there is one. An important consideration is whether you want indoor display of info, online display, or both. If you can afford, a temperature unit that is fan-aspirated will be more accurate.
