Just moved accounts from https://kolektiva.social/@4sphere. If I'm not following you now, I didn't move properly and would like to get back in touch.

Interests include #math and (social affordances of) technology. Also #NaturalLanguageProcessing

I like not being an asshole. If, for whatever reason, I don't manage that, please point it out to me and I'll do my best to fix it!

For many reasons, this week has been especially unpleasant for me; I'd like to recover some of the feeling of living in a universe that's capable of ✨Beauty✨ (the capital/emojis aren't necessary, but they help).

If you have a moment, please respond with your favorite X that gives you what you judge to be an analogous feeling, and an explanation of what's cool about it.

Suggestions that have worked for me before:

beautiful theorems, proofs, or visualizations/intuitions;
neuro-spicy special interests;
scientific discoveries (all fields: fundamental physics to animal behavior);
clever puzzle solutions;
a historical event that's happy for more than just bigots;
a difficult to translate word or phrase and some of the best ways it can be used;
an unusual grammatical feature of some language you know (of) or culture you're a part of that just makes sense.

Things you just think are neat and what you like about them.

Thank you

4sphere,

I guess I can give one to start with. I've noticed that some communities have themes for certain days.

There's the Internet mandatory #caturday
But I've also seen

#MardiPatisserie
#FensterFreitag
#nakeddiefriday

I like the posts themselves, but I also like how they play with language: consonance and rhyme feel like an important part of the genre, as does evoking the subject and the proper weekday.

I have no idea what these are called -- maybe @becauselangpod would know? Anyway, they are a fun bit of linguistic and cultural play, and it always brightens my day a little when I find a new one.

4sphere,

@becauselangpod

Thanks to the people who responded plus a little searching through this bot's posts ( https://mastodon.social/@trendytoots ) I have extended the list. Please feel free to respond with any more you know and can comfortably share, maybe with a description of what it's for, and a suggestion for what to call this kind of practice (or maybe it has an official name?). I'd really love to see examples from a broader variety of languages!

Note: if I'm bothering the people who use these hashtags, please let me know! I can remove the "#" or the whole hashtag from the list

Protest? https://www.youtube.com/live/PPKU_w_4qOI?si=xIJwwCbEISc8ojo6

Jewish protesters calling for a ceasefire. Signs in the building read "Not in our name", but I can't see if homeland security arrested the last of those. Still a good presence outside, though.

Edit: I can't find the stream anymore, and the link is just a recording that ends way before the point where I stepped out. I don't suppose anyone knows how to find it again?

So, I spend a lot of time reading weird books and occasionally I post bits of what I find. Lately I've been thinking about having some kind of site for Zach Reads Books, e.g. reviews, jokes, maybe readings? What's the format for this today? Youtube?

4sphere,

@ZachWeinersmith

I like the blog idea that's already been mentioned.

I like having the option for audio, with visual aids.

Podcast with extensive notes might be nice

Peertube might be interesting if you want video?

I'm happy to report that the third edition of my textbook Evolution, coauthored with @LeeDugatkin, is now available from W. W. Norton and Co.

The new edition features expanded coverage of anthropogenic evolution as well as a strengthened focus on data literacy and data reasoning.

If you're an instructor in this field or training to become one, drop me a DM or email, and I can get you an evaluation copy.

More about the book: https://wwnorton.com/books/9781324033714

4sphere,

This looks great! When my book-fund gets funded, I'm going to have to grab this one!

Happy Enshittification Day! 💥

July 1, 2023: Reddit cuts off API access, Twitter requires login, Youtube may ban ad-blockers, Meta & Google block news in Canada...

A half-year since Cory Doctorow's seminal thesis on , how corporate platforms die (https://pluralistic.net/2023/01/21/potemkin-ai/#hey-guys), and every corporate site seems hell bend on its own destruction.

Celebrate by going to [instance address]/about, find the donations link, and make your contribution to open social media!

Calendar updated! I assume celebrations will consist of ripping out coax cables and exchanging public keys?

OH: "So basically our choices are Plan A or... not Plan A. Any questions?"

4sphere,

@gvwilson

Can we do both?

There is a dialect of English spoken in fields like business and project management that uses terms like "action item," "pivot," "user stories," and favoring three letter acronyms. Is there a name for this dialect? Are there any sociolinguistic studies of how it's used? Histories of how it developed?
