is dead, why do people still insist on being on that platform? It's lost its relevance, and all the best people in Infosec have moved here to or another app.

I feel like most of those still on Twitter are more worried about appearances and keeping their follower numbers than keeping and growing a great community.

@chiefgyk3d had a couple of meetings today though and in general here in the UK the numbers are down hugely in 2024 across all the platforms including youtube, twitch, tik tok. Everything is harder, and prices are up and rewards are down. The big tinternet bubble of great numbers and easy money seems to have gone very quickly

This summer I am hoping to sit down after and spin up my RTMP restreamer probably using AWS so I can get around to finding someplace to setup an Owncast account, not sure if I want to run my own server as that's a lot of work.

I plan to simulcast to Owncast, Twitch, Youtube, and Tiktok at the same time. And then merge all the chats on the same screen on my Linux box so I can see all of the chat on one screen.

@chiefgyk3d you only need to look on youtube for that answer. The search only finds promoted content these days, finding a livestream is next to impossible. The reason I said makertube is that is is well funded, supports livestream and well just works. Also the chat is easy to integrate with others (like owncast)
Instead of youtube I'd offer rumble as an alternative. You currently get around 100 times the audience on twitch to youtube based on my friends observations

@Mrfunkedude @errhead @wjmaggos I see the potential, but there is a vast amount of people out there who want the money.... I'm sure I've debated this before, and plenty of people who can't see past youtube or other "legacy" platforms....
Heck I know lots who still think X/Twitter is good and Facebook is the bomb for social media

I'm going through Battlestar Galactica for the third time. I thought it was a good time to do so because one of the major themes of the show was that the robots that the Capricans created went to war with the humans and almost but not quite wiped them out. Almost every episode was about the conflict between humans and AIs. It's a fantastic show, the acting and the writing as far beyond most TV series. I'll let you know if I figure anything out from watching the series again.

Converting 2 video TS files to MP4s and my computer fan kicked up its speed to high gear and sounds like a helicopter trying to take off the ground

I'm going to have to put in ear plugs for safety😂

After this task I need to set my program to only convert one at a time

I run my conversion tasks on a recycled HP Elite desktop, Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4590S CPU @ 3.00GHz, 8gb ram. I bought a pallet of them from Gov Deals for $50 when the county changed out its terminals

Garage is full of them

@paul yeah not the best those, decent way back when but these days they aren't....
But it is what you have. If time isn't an issue wouldn't it be better to have one just to convert videos and such, seeing as you have a pallet spare. Or if not, send me the files, I'll convert them and just pay me a pittance to cover the electricity as I have plenty of cpu and gpu power spare...

@kikobar tried on my instance - only followed a couple and yes it adds a considerable amount of traffic straight away....
No shock but threads is a brute force activitypub implementation already

@kikobar it's not elegant it just takes everything literally - something activitypub and mastodon is already guilty of. But threads has a massive number of users already so you can imagine the data being sent

I’m seeing a lot of people badmouthing Facebook/Meta and saying we shouldn’t federate with Threads.

Mastodon.social is owned by Mastodon gGmbH and run by the author of Mastodon. Mastodon.social federates with Threads. If Facebook/Meta were toxic, do you think they would? Of course, not.

Facebook/Meta has Mastodon’s author’s (& the original Mastodon server’s) seal of approval. So you should all shush because clearly you’re mistaken.

@aral Harsh - I don't think people should federate with threads. Meta has over and over again abused its market position to make money. The only difference I would say is that people should do a per person block of threads.net
Yes Meta is toxic. Yes Meta is bad. The sheer amount of lawsuits make that clear. If people don't federate then threads will make its own way in the world. Meta don't need federation it is just a way to make more money and abuse their power

@aral of course they don't care it's called choice. That is why I advocate a per person block and is also why they federate. The tools are there so use them. When a platform has several ways to achieve the same thing and you can also choose an instance that does or does not block these choices are powerful.

This is why I advocate a per person block. The choices are there, it is up to people to be educated about the choice of instance. This is a core feature - join an instance that aligns with what YOU want and go from there. It is a whole different way of thinking...
There is no right or wrong way here. But saying that a platform is OK because of a choice made by someone is very counter-productive when the whole ecosystem made choices to help this

Meta has big problems right now. Attacked from all sides, frankly for being rubbish. Apple has the same with a DoJ investigation. Google in hot water. I am hearing from severla people though that nearly all the big tech companies are looking at getting round these issues by going paid for. I'm afraid, as I see it, the days of free and ad subsidised internet is drawing to a close unless you go niche for everything
