Daily Beast's new article on Elon endorsing the Pizzagate conspiracy theory gave me another #skibidi pose for #skibidiElon and if they give me many more I'm absolutely going to end up animating these things
I think one of the causes behind the meteoric rise of the skibidi toilet's popularity is thanks to one simple fact--at least yet, the videos aren't SELLING anything. No in-video ads, no sponsored products shilled as fake "reviews", no "buy this [whatever] in my Tiktok shop!" it's proof that weirdness can still connect with people, that the Hollywood takeover of grassroots-made online content is still not quite complete. It gives an extremely oldbie content creator like me some hope...
Is the #skibidi toilet the sign that the Redemption Arc/Era of #YouTubePoop / weird internet videos is upon us?
Skibidi is a return to a pre #YouTube age where you actually had to work to find popular, homemade content, it was shared among real people, not carefully crafted by #algorithms designed to find the most #viral way to sell things. Internet videos made by regular people that are just allowed to be #weird, something that #corporateMedia (including the many, many, many #capitalist brands who have purchased their own "#influencers") would never allow to grace its airwaves (remember tv antennas? Lol).
As a very oldbie #contentCreator who WOULD like to at least make my many many hours of creating videos and livestreams break even financially, but who has too many pesky ethics to ever sell out and shill products I don't care about (pretending we lived in a world where capitalism-unfriendly content like mine could ever get paid sponsorships), I still miss the times when commercial-sanitized content intended foremost to sell things was not just rare but nonexistent, when people made videos just because it was fun. There was no "online famous even to the masses" - - if you were "famous" at all, it was only among fans of niche humor and Topics like yourself.
I'm not saying today's standards for viral content shouldn't be allowed to exist... If you enjoy that kind of content, great. I just miss when it didn't completely dominate every mainstream platform (aka ones that more than ten people use, unlike mastodon 😏) and there was still room for weirdness to flourish. And maybe the popularity of joyful nonsense like Skibidi means that type of content isn't completely dead....
At least until Skibidi toilet plushies go up for sale.
