This really showcases how weak the #Lemmy infrastructure is.
If a rogue moderator or admin decides to nuke an entire community of thousands of people’s works & a long history, and scrub the existence of that group so well the name of it is even lost, there are fragments of that group mirrored across hundreds of other nodes. The community & history should be rebuilt in less than 1 hour on a new host (perhaps the host with the 2nd most amount of content).
Info is still unfolding but the data is apparently not lost. A mod deleted a community and the admins can still see the posts & reactions. But of course the whole public lost visibility on it. The admins are researching how to restore visibility to the public and apparently there are federation issues. Users can enter their profile and see their own posts to that group. They can also still see replies to them in their inbox. But the community gets renamed to deleted@$instance so it’s a mess.
If you play Minecraft: Java Edition, are still on a Mojang account and haven't migrated to a Microsoft account yet, you have less than a week left to migrate. Your profile will be deleted if you don't.
Lemmy.world is temporarily disabling open signups and moving to an application-required signup process, due to ongoing issues with malicious bot accounts.
We know this is a major step to take, but we believe that it’s the right one for both us and our community right now.
@vsp I got a shipping number through Etsy which the mail service doesn’t recognize so not sure how to proceed with them. I got a “confirmation” from Etsy saying it was delivered to my correct address three days ago.
I know it’s not your problem; hoping @cheeseblintzes can help though…
@ccunning@vsp Ive seen your message on Etsy just now, I would assume that because the order has been delivered, it may no longer show up in the mail system?
It should be in a business size envelope (so the normal envelopes) thats a shade of brown with a sticker on the back. Look for that and let me know.
So, after a couple of days (weeks?) I decide to create a couple of #lemmy communities for #Dandadan and #SPYxFAMILY in #lemmyworld because there were none. Was thinking about creating one for #chainsawman but chickened out lol seems like a lot of work
Also, as a small side note, it's best that this happened at 100,000 users, rather than 10,000,000.
And that the miscreant who did it... is only redirecting the site to untoward websites and sharing insensitive messages, rather than malicious malware or Bitcoin scams. :blobcatfearful:
