Joplin and joplin-server, its my current Evernote exit plan. Joplin uses both Markdown and html for storing notes. Its.. not bad. Is it ready for the average user? Not likely. As a stand alone not storage, it seems pretty solid if you can handle markdown. On multiple devices? It need some work.

Syncing, that's how you get your dats in multiple places. It supports a few back end methods to sync: their paid service, WebDAV, filesystem, some cloud services (likely variant of filesystem), and joplin-server.

Having paid for Evernote for decades (yeah, feels like decades) I want to see if I can make use of both my at home infrastructure and something i can manage myself. I started with WebDAV over Nextcloud. Ooof, that was slow and caused my android app to crash.

Next I looked a filesystem sync. This relied on syncing a folder on both my phone and my PC and any other device. I use Resilio Sync at home (you can use Syncthing) to mirror folder on my PC with one on my phone. This worked much better but it didn't finish after 2 days. Apparently my phone's power saving kept killing it part way. (Ok, I do have a LARGE pile of notes.. i used to be listed in the top 3 of having notes on Evernote back in early to mid 2000s.)

Finally I got joplin-server (beta) setup in docker. The notes on setting it up were spotty, but I got it done with a reverse proxy and a letsencrypt cert. Much faster, but I noticed it did take a lot of time to finally sync and settle down on my laptop. Only my PC (where I started) was done syncing first. MY phone is still a WIP.

Be curious if you use Joplin and how many notes you have. I see 20k notes + resources + other under sync status.

How did I know I was in the top 3 for notes on Evernote? I used to follow their podcast and they mentioned 3 users had over X (I forget the actual number) notes. I looked down at my note count and realized I was one of them O_O

I just discovered that the .md text editor Joplin has Vim mode. I didn't think I could possibly fall more in love with the project.

Given all that is going on with #Evernote laying off its US and Chile staff and moving all work to Europe (see https://www.techmeme.com/230709/p7#a230709p7 ), I'm SO glad that I moved my notes over to #Obsidian back in March!

If it helps anyone, here are my notes about what I did to migrate from Evernote to Obsidian: https://www.danyork.com/2023/03/after-almost-15-years-saying-goodbye-to-evernote-and-moving-to-obsidian.html

lmamakos,

@danyork I did my migration from #Evernote to #joplin back when they started turning stupid and signing up all their customer to QA and beta test the feature-incomplete reimplementation. They eliminated one of my must-have features which was fully local data for offline access on all platforms. I live in the land of crappy mobile network coverage and this is important.

Subsequently I then migrated all my notes from Joplin the #obsidianmd . I found the UI and third-party ecosystem in #obsidian real attractive, and then I jumped when I tried it. Yeah, the application isn't open-source, the the valuable part of this picture is MY DATA which is still Markdown files. The data sovereignty issue is key here, and both Joplin and Obsidian embrace this. Kudos to both, and frankly the choice of one over the other turned into a matter of taste for me.

(just getting started with my research. any tips & links appreaciated!)

Once again, I'm thinking about moving away from #Evernote. I wrote a couple of blog posts about that, on Saturday (https://blog.andrewhuey.com/2023/07/dithering-on-evernote-again/) and Sunday (https://blog.andrewhuey.com/2023/07/evernote-alternative-experimentation/). I'm looking at #OneNote, #Obsidian, and #Joplin, mostly.

Assuming Evernote is really dead and assuming I need a note taking app with a browser access that is useable on Macs, Ipads and Android phones, what shall I use?

I like the idea of obsidian, but the lack of online access is prohibitive. I mainly create my notes as pure text files, sometimes with attached images, almost never PDFs. Image annotation is a plus, PDF annotation I can live without. Good search function is crucial. Tags a plus. Evernote notes Import a must.

raineer,

@vicgrinberg if the online access is truly key, I wonder if perhaps Nextcloud on top of obsidian folders would be your best choice?

#Obsidian and #Joplin both work great for me, but I admit the online access is a wrinkle.

It’s all markdown so I’d probably work through some cloud-based text editor when I need the online access - and then the native tools when I’m at my PC.

FYI for the few remaining people who pay for Evernote: it’s time to love to Bear or Notion or OneNote (which is excellent and free) or even Apple Notes. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=36609641

#Joplin is open source, can import #Evernote notebooks and has clients for every platform. They even offer a reasonably priced cloud option. Check it out at https://joplinapp.org/

A few days using , and I think I'm going to keep it. It's super polished, and I always wanted a personal , which is essentially what it is.

For me the main advantage over is how good linking between notes works.

The biggest disappointment is that there's no built in

I've been wanting to see what the hype is all about, but I just can't get over how the only proper sync is the one that uses their own infra. I would love it if I could point it at my own infrastructure for that.

Sure, I could use sync clients, but those don't integrate well with the mobile app.

Guess I'm sticking with .

Dear folks: Do you have a favorite application for working with a folderful of files?

I am currently using Obsidian, which isn't necessarily my favorite, but at least it's familiar.

avmakt,

@jmac I'm very happy with #Joplin (https://joplinapp.org/). It's #OpenSource, cross platform, and does a great job.

For me, the biggest downside is that I have to launch any external editor from within Joplin to get it properly synced.

While there's also a good cli app, actually getting it synced up with the desktop app has proven troublesome, so I've resigned to the good old 'find' whenever I find myself on the far side of an SSH connection and need to grab a file.

For the users - If the following was said, would it make you think twice?

Offline mode - Nothing is planned. Priority is collaboration and integration with other tools etc. Some very limited offline capability may be possible in the future.

Calixthe,

@ednico It has an amazing interface, but I think those of us used to #ObsidianMD or #LogSeq or #Joplin are too used to off-line first. I will still keep learning and using it though, just not as primary or only place to hold my data.

I need recommendations for a self-hosted note taking service with a client-server model, so I don't have to sync my notes manually. Markdown support is preferred.

artfulsodger,
@artfulsodger@fosstodon.org avatar

@dusnm, #Joplin can do this with the self-hostable (for personal use), proprietary backend server and open-source clients. I have been using it without any issues for a while now.

RockyC,
@RockyC@fosstodon.org avatar

@dusnm I’m going to second the #Joplin nomination, though I don’t yet self-host. I just love the app because it’s fully cross-platform: Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS apps all exist.

irfan, to random

I've been seeing people raving about the note-taking app, #Obsidian, almost like a cult, and it got me curious. Then after some light digging and seeing why people liked it, most of it is really just what you'd normally find with #Markdown editors... some of which I think looks better and is more intuitive to use.

#Notable is my go-to for years now, and is available on Linux, macOS and Windows. Another popular one I normally see (but have never tried) is #Joplin which is open source and available on all platforms including mobile.

What I take away from this is... Markdown editors are awesome, and makes it super easy to get your ideas/thoughts out in a really organised way. I've primarily used them for all sorts of notes, work documents, tutorials, manuals, etc. and there's no going back from that.

JoergSorge, to random

@joplinapp Sometimes, I wish to have the ability to go back to an previus edited note with one click, for example with an back button or an shortcut. Is this possible? Is there already a feature request or a plugin?

    @joplinapp Congrats! I moved to #Joplin after using another service for years and haven't looked back. I love that I have total control over my data by syncing to my personal #Nextcloud server.

    Had to cancel my Standard Notes subscription today. Just another yearly cost I don't need.

    I am looking at Notion as another alternative, or maybe Joplin, but I don't really care much for their interfaces.

    Yet everyone seems to love Notion, do I just need to get over the learning curve?

    StephenJudge,

    @danarel I've used as the closest replacement for and liked it but their synchronization and encryption was unreliable. Plenty incidents if notes not synching and decryption failing made me nervous about using it.
