Does anyone have a raw image (DD, sector image) of an "Iomega Tools" Zip disk? I'm curious how they implemented the dual Mac/PC format.
Beware: don't put it in a PC or Mac with the Iomega Tools software installed. If it sees a Tools disk, it'll delete the other partition and 'reclaim' it as free space. Guess how I ruined mine!
Imaging on Linux with "dd" should be safe.
An unmodified disk will report as being read-only.
@philpem Well found one Tools disk but it had already been converted to a PC one at some point, guess I'll keep looking to see if I have another. Was just showing as a single partition of the full disk size of FAT16.
My over 13 year old Iomega MiniMax 2TB HDD finally gave out, but I suspected it was just the power supply, not the actual disk inside.
Thankfully, a ~€20 SATA to USB adapter with a power supply brought it back to life, after I crudely extracted it from the Iomega enclosure.
📷 I found a couple of #Iomega zip disks I used to store scanned pictures in 2003-4, but the player is long gone. Would *love to see the pictures (hundreds probably), but a Zip Drive (used) is at least $120 delivered. Can't. FML.
@DemocracySpot If you have tech nerd friends, you might just ask around and see if someone has one in a closet you can borrow long enough to transfer the files. I think I had mine until just a couple years ago. There's got to be someone out there who's slightly more of a hoarder than I am.
Thank you. Hope my "tech nerd friends" in the #Fediverse read this, and someone who has a ZIP drive lying around will make me a loan—for #Art's sake. x
