One of my talks for #GPN22 got accepted!

I'll talk about how "My files are a mess!", and how it will stay this way unless we achieve a collective enlightenment.

Now I finally have an excuse to do the research on the topic XD

@dcz "It has been this way since the days of DOS" Actually, this goes way more back. AFAIR to the 50s.

Local file organization and multi-classification concepts were my PhD topic: https://karl-voit.at/tagstore/en/papers.shtml

Further ideas lead to my concept with : https://karl-voit.at/managing-digital-photographs/

I just saw an amazing video by who told the story behind his -based and the journey so far.

If he'd spoken to me a while back, I could have spared him lots of dead ends. 😜

He also evaluated and he found https://en.eagle.cool/

His preferences are different to mine. I'd never go with sidecar files, one interface only nor with a database.

I love my concept as it is: https://karl-voit.at/managing-digital-photographs/

My method using 🏷️ is so much more than just a fine solution for . You'll see that it actually addresses many aspects of working with local files in general:

Did you know that #Windows (with #NTFS) has native file #tagging built-in?

I describe how it's working and why you will not use it on https://karl-voit.at/2019/11/26/Tagging-Files-With-Windows-10/

It's a fun story to read about how #Microsoft fu**ed up this great idea with their weird implementation.

I'm working on a file manager!

And I thought I could document the development process here.

I've wanted to explore the idea of a non-hierarchical file manager for a long time and this is the result, Hyperplane.

The idea is that you organize files by tags (or categories or whatever name I end up with) instead of folders while still being able to access them from a traditional file manager.

You can test it now if you want, details in the README:

@worldsendless @kramo Here you are, I've submitted a brief feedback on the #Hyperplane concept as far as I understood it without trying the Flatpak on https://github.com/kra-mo/hyperplane/issues/2

@murpunktat invited me for a #talk at their #Worklab2023 about #PIM and #filemanagement:

Watch the 43min video if you're interested in un-learning some patterns we're using for decades although we should use different concepts instead.

Funny behavioral contrast I've noticed:

On my Windows 11 laptop, my Downloads folder goes back to the day I first turned it on.

On my Mac, I constantly and obsessively empty Downloads.

Exact same size of hard drive on both computers. Different cultural contexts, I guess. 🤷‍♂️
