An unexpected encounter with the otherwise elusive emperor dragonfly (Anax imperator) that has been zooming around our garden for a few weeks 🐲🪰

It was trapped in the glass roof above our carport, but I was able to rescue it & release it back into the garden.

Time enough for a quick portrait though 🙂

One of my favorites! A recently emerged female Halloween Pennant dragonfly (Celithemis eponina) in the backyard this morning. #dragonflies #Odonata #Illinois #nature #macro #photography #wildlifephotography #photographylovers

Some dragonflies from this morning's hot walk through the local arboretum, my best guesses are:

Twelve-spotted Skimmer, Flame Skimmer and Western Pondhawk (Female). Thank you for the ID @LateOnsetGirl

#Insects #dragonflies

A Flame Skimmer is perched on a flower stalk, the dragonfly has a red body and head, the wings are mostly read with yellow spots.
An all green dragonfly is perched on a berry bush flower.

Here's a photo of what I believe to be a type of dragonfly called Ruddy Darter (Blutrote Heidelibelle). Really beautiful!

Still very few dragonflies in the garden this summer, but another regular friend turned up today: a female black-tailed skimmer (Orthetrum cancellatum).

There's an emperor dragonfly out there too, leading me a merry chase as it flits around hunting.

I will catch it at some point!

Some dragonfly. Could be a four-spotted chaser (Libellula quadrimaculata).

Libellen im Doppelpack. Über dem Wasser lässt sich wohl gut Lauern.

This might seem silly...

But every time I catch a side view of dragonflies - when they're nearly vertical like this - I can't help thinking they must really be fairies.

Like the whole dragonfly thing is just a magical disguise. And these little moments are when the illusion shimmers & I get a glimpse of their true nature.

Bc there's just something so eerily human about them. It kind of freaks me out a bit. In a 'beautiful but slightly unnerving' kind of way.

(I read way too much fantasy fiction lol)

Profile view of a dragonfly grasping a horsetail reed. The body orientation is not quite vertical. On a compass the abdomen would be pointing southwest, or on a wall clock would point halfway between the seven and eight. But it is upright enough that it still gives the illusion of a tiny Tinkerbell-like fairy. Further detail: The dragonfly is a female Widow Skimmer. It has a golden and brown body. The wings are a very dark brown from the base to the halfway point, then turn clear with a small smudge of dark brown at the very tip. There is a faint coppery sheen across the wings as they catch the sunlight.

A Sapphire Flutterer (Rhyothemis triangularis) spotted at Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve, Singapore, on 4 June 2023. Good to see this uncommon dragonfly, with the unmistakable, dramatic blue patches on its wings.

Small wildlife seen on a hike near a stream. The main trail mostly ran along the chaparral-covered hillside just outside the riparian zone, but a few branches went down through the trees to the stream.

The lizard was well-camouflaged as it skittered around the tree trunk, in contrast to the two #dragonflies (a vivid blue dancer and a flame skimmer -- you can probably guess which is which!) There were quite a few small blue dancers (like half this length!) flying around the trail uphill from the stream bed. This one was resting on a wooden beam placed across the stream as a bridge. Finally, a checkered white #butterfly in front of the invasive mustard plants that were all over the lower parts of the chaparral.

A very narrow, very bright blue dragonfly on a wooden board near the edge, seen from above and to the side, its long translucent wings folded back. Its eyes are two blue spheres attached to either side of its head, making the whole body look sort of like a T-pin.
A bright red dragonfly perched on a twig, its long translucent wings out and slightly downward. In the background are blurry green leaves. Its eyes take up most of its head, and it is facing toward the camera.
A white butterfly with a two dark spots on each wing, one circular and one square, perched on a one of several tiny clusters of bright yellow flowers. The tangle of green stems behind them is so thick you can't see anything through it.

My first odonata of the year, a teneral blue-tailed damselfly (I think), I momentarily looked away as I heard toads, and when I turned round a Carrion Crow had picked it up, probably for its chicks! #dragonflies #UrbanBiodiversity #Hull #EastPark

Crow walking away, the abdomen of the damselfly sticking out from its bill!
