Mink farms are complexes of caged mink, escaped mink, wild mink, peridomestic cats and feral cats. Presumably the virus could be developing in the caged mink and then spread to those outside. The virus also could be developing in rodents / deer and then from there to the free mink, peridomestic and feral cats and from there to the caged mink.
