I don’t think #helix will replace #vim they have different models and vim is religion . Also #helix luck a lot of #vscode out of box ide features like import fix or linter auto fixes and suggestions etc. but I like editor . I am happy to learn how to add missed features !
@louis It's kinda wild, but I've never used #VSCode! I got onto the #Vim -> #Neovim -> #Spacemacs -> #DoomEmacs -> Vanilla #Emacs train many moons ago. The only thing I thought I'd miss would be VSCode's pairing/collaboration system, but TBH I've never been asked to use it by someone else. I do however use Emacs/Neovim with upterm every now and then (CRDT.el is cool and all, but it's way easier to share an SSH command with someone who's not also an Emacs user). It's not as vital as people make it out to be, although I'm sure I'm preaching to the choir on that point ':D
One thing that always bothers me in #spacemacs is creating a new empty file. "SPC b n n" to create an empty buffer, then "SPC f s" to save it should actually be a direct shortcut like "SPC f n" by default. There are too many confirmations in between, too. (Open the file in the current window? Of course!) A workaround without creating this binding is to select whitespace (for example by going into visual mode) and then saving this as a new file "v SPC f c" is almost good enough.
I've been studying #Emacs for a while now. My conclusion, so far (keeping in mind that I've been using #Vim / #Neovim for over 10 years), is that a strong reason to switch from one to the other would be an affinity for wanting to study elisp/lisp, including modern lisp languages like #clojure
I say this because Emacs is pure elisp, and it is, in fact, an incredibly powerful language... absurdly so, actually.

was created as an alternative to make Vim better by improving its usability and making it more extensible.
At most, what you'll find in terms of Emacs distributions are options like umacs (the version that Linus Torvalds uses, which is more streamlined) or something like #spacemacs (the opposite of Emacs/umacs, which comes with everything included), that is, a super Emacs package. ++
I've recently switched from #Spacemacs to #DoomEmacs, and it feels like an upgrade. I really like Spacemacs's usability and discoverability, and feared that I would miss it if I moved to something else. But Doom Emacs subscribes to the same UX so that wasn't a problem at all. Plus, I can use a great splash image in the home buffer. 😎
People are always complaining about #emacs startup time, especially on macOS.

Just spent a day wrestling the notes into submission, and not looking forward to taming my ~7000 line configuration.
Every year or so, I try using #obsidian for #notetaking and such, but after a day, I always come back to #orgmode . There are just way too many extras you get being in #emacs#evil and org mode.
@sergio_101@kentborg I actually have no idea what vanilla emacs feels like.. Started with Emacs when my Vim installation broke on Windows, and installed #spacemacs right away. Migrated to #doomemacs as Spacemacs was quite slow. Guess I'd be quite lost in vanilla Emacs.
Hello #mastodon from #emacs. I must admit I was a bit displeased with seeing all the #eurovision posts on #tootsi so I went to check how mastodon looks from inside the emacs. So far I like it. I have a constant urge to C-x C-s while writing this toot.
Since I'm in Emacs I'm also quite pleased how last Emacs user group Slovenia meetup unfolded. It was not very crowded (if I'm being modest) and so I took the liberty to read the article on making elisp repl more comfortable. I've added the config to my #spacemacs as well.
Hopefully I'll find some time to get better in #elisp in the upcomming months.
Each time I want to improve my #emacs / #orgmode setup, I'm hitting such a complexity wall that I always start rethinking that choice… Org mode is the best thing that happened to my notes and todos capture, but emacs is the most complex software I've run in my life… And loosing so much time for small things (and often not succeeding) is making it less and less worth it for me… And that makes me sad :/
