Someone please explain the SEC/Ripple legal situation. So, a judge gave a mixed ruling, with both sides winning and losing on specific issues. But now it's going to a... jury trial??? Are SEC rules so unclear that a random group of people with no real subject matter knowledge have to now decide if Ripple is a security? Seriously, WTH? 🤔

Does anyone know what “flavor” of #ABNF / #EBNF this is written in? The table heading says “EBNF,” while the paragraph above references “ABNF,” but it appears to use a format that’s different from what’s defined in RFC 5234 or ISO/IEC 14977:1996.

https://www.unicode.org/reports/tr35/#unicode-locale-identifier

I could make assumptions about some of these characters, but I’d rather be as explicit as possible.

#Unicode #CLDR #LDML #TR35

ramsey,
@ramsey@phpc.social avatar

I don’t have an official answer, but it appears they might be using the EBNF syntax defined by the W3C in Section 6 of XML 1.0 here: https://www.w3.org/TR/xml/#sec-notation

I’m drawing this conclusion based on a table found here: http://www.cs.man.ac.uk/~pjj/bnf/ebnf.html

Unicode TR35 uses the same choice, optional, and repetition characters shown in the row for “EBNF for XML.” However, the “rule” notation in Unicode uses = instead of ::=.

Solar Winds, the enterprise technology company made famous after suffering a nation state directed cyber attack in 2020, has been served notice by the SEC that further action is coming. Not only did they receive their own Wells Notice in October, but now two individuals, their CFO and CISO, have as well.

This is the first time a CISO has received a Wells Notice.

What should corporate directors know and do about this? To shed some light on the practical implications for business leaders we will ask for insights from two of our OODA network experts, Bob Flores and Junaid Islam.

More friendly environment w/dry vaporizers (bag, whip, or portable/maybe extract) so there's no smoke (under 200C, convection-based) (and note the lack of cotton-candy scented steam clouds that people hate about flavored ecigs/liquid vape pens). Also edibles and the like... but that's just time-delay dosed food.

I would say that drinking is a longer/more gradual experience so has more reason for a dedicated space. Though I guess the passable options that I mentioned could draw the experience out, but I've never done that so I'm not sure what that's like compared to one-and-done/hanging-out-when-high.

(though as others have said, it is a thing)

Dry vaporizers (with temperature below 200C, convection-based) don't have smoke so are a lot less offensive with smell, if not odorless particularly with access to fresh air.

Also people smelling of alcohol, particularly if they are drunk or drinking liquor, is definitely a thing. Also barfing. I wouldn't doubt bars having bad smells sometimes.

    insomniac_lemon avatar

    I agree on smoke.

For vapor, note that many dangers that you have heard of are related to ecigs (liquid-based vape pens). The ones that are flavored+have nicotine and added adulterants (glycol/glycerol at least), and that use a conductive heating coil that may expose the user to heavy metals especially if they get too hot (though probably more of an issue for heavy daily use). Plus with the higher water content, breathing in the steam cloud may be a lung infection risk.

For a dry (herb) vaporizer set at a temperature under 200C (and convection-based), you don't have those problems (2nd paragraph). I am not saying anyone should be near random people with this, but in a dedicated location it should be fine (especially with fresh/filtered air or an open space). You're breathing significantly worse stuff being exposed to the ambient car exhaust to/from said location (also: gasoline vapor at gas stations, or even something as unassuming as candles because those are burning).

lloram239, (edited ) to linux in Why everyone is switching to NixOS ?

NixOS is the only[1] Linux distribution that feels like it is build around Free Software. Meaning upstream Git repositories can be treated as first-class citizen and installed directly without convoluted binary packaging system (that still exists in the background, but only as cache to speed up build times). Nix also makes it very easy to upgrade, downgrade, side grade, patch, override dependencies or otherwise change packages, or even just keep multiple versions of the same software around. Something many other distributions still struggle with or make completely impossible with the distributions own tools. Even the act of installing software in Nix becomes somewhat unnecessary, as you can just run software straight from the Git repository.

And best of all, it's all based on a very simple and transparent packaging system, if you ever used GNU stow, kind of like that, it's all held together with a bunch of symlinks and some environment variables. No contains, no ostree, none of those ugly workarounds, just plain old Unix stuff that you can find and grep through as much as you like.

Simply put, NixOS puts the joy back in Linux, while other distributions like Ubuntu try to actively trash their reputation with a proprietary App store and others like Debian just stagnate around and are still stuck with the same old packing system that was state of the art 25 years ago and hasn't improve much at all since than. NixOS just provides a dramatically cleaner and simpler approach that also happens to be vastly more powerful.

Another cool thing, if you don't wanna switch distributions just yet and reinstall the full NixOS, you can just use the Nix package manager itself on whatever distribution you are already using.

As for downsides: Nix does not play nicely with packages, scripts and programs made for other distributions, like at all. /usr/bin/env and /bin/sh are about the only files it has in common with other distributions, the whole standard Linux file tree is completely empty otherwise. There is buildFHSUserEnv to work around that, but that requires a bit more knowledge and effort from the user.

[1] There is also GNU Guix, which is basically a reimplementation of Nix with Guile/Scheme
