#Emmer (MN), the #House maj whip, was elected as the #GOP pick on a 5th ballot in an internal race that drew 9 #Republicans. It’s not clear, however, that he has enough support to be elected on the House floor. To prevail, Emmer would need a majority of the full chamber.
Emmer, who has been in #Congress since 2015, previously chaired the #National Republican Congressional Cmte — the House campaign arm — for 4 yrs.
The #House is expected to vote Tues afternoon on whether to make Rep #JimJordan its next speaker. Jordan, a #RightWing conservative agitator, who spews #ConspiracyTheories & #propaganda, is allied w/ Trump. He was chosen by fellow #HouseRepublicans on Fri to lead the House but must win a majority in the full chamber to take the gavel.
A total of 20 #Republicans voted against #JimJordan on the first vote for #speaker, the exact same number who opposed #McCarthy on his first of 15 ballots. But it’s a very different group of 20 lawmakers, & it remains to be seen what Jordan can do to win them over.
The Louisiana #Republican, who serves as the House majority leader, announced at a conference meeting Thurs evening that he was pulling out of the battle to become #speaker.
“Nobody’s going to use me as an excuse to hold back our ability to get the #House opened again,” #Scalise said.
Asked whether he’d endorsed #JimJordan for #speaker, Scalise said he had “cut no deals w/ anybody.”
“I am sure there will be a lot of people that look at [running], but it’s got to be people that aren’t doing it for themselves & their own personal interests,” he said.
(good luck finding that in your conference)
#HouseRepublicans aren’t talking in the halls outside the room in the basement of the Capitol where they’re meeting, for the most part. But they are clashing on #X, aka #Twitter.
After Rep Steve #Scalise withdrew, Rep Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) suggested 4 alternatives, including #GymJordan.
Surrounded by a gaggle of reporters, #KevinMcCarthy has no defense for #HouseRepublicans failure to function at the most basic level. He literally just repeated over & over “but the border” & hypothetical allegories about “the border”
The prospect of a #GovernmentShutdown escalated significantly Tues as #HouseRepublicans’ intraparty tensions again came to a head in a dramatic floor vote amid negotiations on a nascent plan to keep the government open.
#HouseRepublicans’ inability to find agreement on even a #stopgap#funding bill that is destined to fail in the #Senate again puts into focus the challenge before #KevinMcCarthy as he tries to unite his party & avoid a #GovernmentShutdown. Though #Republicans largely agree on the need to significantly curb federal spending, divisions mostly over process have given any 5 lawmakers enormous #power in the razor-thin majority.
