Agile Open Northwest was loads of fun. Met some great people. Saw some familiar faces. And, finally met some folks I’ve followed for a while in person(h/t @qcoding).

Evening coding sessions were also interesting to participate in.

Good feedback on the session I did on The 5 Ps and the one Becca and I did together as The Irreverent Agilists: No Spikes in the Mosh Pit.

Happy new year!

How do you feel about pair coding? Many love it, but some don't, and it's a skill that can be learnt and perfected.

Joe Krebs from Agile.FM asked me about XP techniques like pair programing, refactoring and continuous integration. We also talked about professionalism in software development and how quality, coding, design and knowledge sharing are all intertwined to make agile teams successful.

Hung out with a mob today.

Most fun I’ve had doing development in as long as I can remember. 3 minute flips, 10 minute break every 45 minutes (every 15 flips), 60 minute lunch. Day flew by.

If I could find a gig where this was the norm, would reconsider my “no development for corporate” rule.

Was actually able to help and add value despite having no clue about any of it. (More on that later.)

Any other mobs I can hop into? Let me know.

I am planning my workshop and coaching schedule for 2024. I am always open for conference, workshop, speaking, and coaching engagements - and I'm currently booking for the first 2 quarters in 2024. If you are interested in exploring having a Software Teaming () or other training, or some coaching for your teams next year please let me know and we can start talking about the possiblities

🚂 On my way to the #NIXOS Zero Hydra Failures meet-up in #Zürich. I will share some of my experience from the last years on how money flows into the upstream ecosystem from different types of actors with different interests. I hope we can get some thoughts and ideas how this money can be used and investments encouraged without throwing the community off balance.

I will run an event microreport below 👇

Now participants are presenting #SummerofNix experience from this year. This year was #mobprogramming exclusive, a super interesting experiment. Seems it was transformative for those who participated. I'd love to share more about it.

Very nice that collaborative and sustainable projects like this can exist besides the usual programmer grinding mills. Thanks again to @EC_NGI.

Invitation (not a pitch):

I find myself with time at the moment. Would like to see what’s happening in the real world (beyond conferences and streaming).

Can I come hang out with you (and possibly your teams)?

We can talk about what that looks like re silent observer all the way to “Throw him on a keyboard, but not under the bus!”

Watched this video by Jessica Kerr about symathesy and software teams as camarata and literally had tears welling up in my eyes. Yes, it’s partly a matter of being rather raw right now, but above all it was this recognition of “oh my god, these are my people… I miss them so much.” Mind you, I’ve never met Jessica. But I just adore this beautiful, inspiring, geeky presentation of what it means to be a great team. That must have been a wonderful #mobprogramming conference. https://youtu.be/W9I4loWogqw

Messaging apps like Slack are designed in a way to keep us hanging on every message, which means any deep thinking process is continuously disrupted. We’re kept constantly in a state of task switching or trying to repair our working memory. These apps also reinforce a work culture that demands immediate response at the expense of .

How can we kill without killing needed collaboration?

It strikes me that one answer to that question is #mobprogramming. It’s a bit counterintuitive but an important aspect of mob programming is that most of the time everyone on the team is concentrating on the same thing.

I haven’t tried this but I’ve done pair programming and it had similar value in that code reviews were no longer configured as required interruptions in the day that force you to stop your work and get into a different complex headspace. Much more time spent in flow.

We mob nearly all the time at work and https://mob.sh/ makes that really easy when working remote. Unlike sharing a single computer, everyone gets to use their own IDE, keybindings, etc.

Only stumbling block I've personally had so far is that JetBrains' line number color choices are not accessible by default. I keep reading 8's as 0's and vice versa. Wish the defaults were a bit more friendly.

I'm really happy to announce the #SummerofNix 2023, organized together with the #NixOS and #NLNet foundations.

We have significantly reworked the collaboration format and will focus exclusively on #mobprogramming this year. In addition, we will be working on a monorepo “ngipkgs” for all #NGI Nix packages.

Thank you, @EU_Commission and NGI program, for the support and the belief in Nix as a tool to manage the complexity of #opensource.

Don't hesitate to apply!
