In another place, another dimension, another thread... I touched upon the topic of the dreaded 'genres' with the good gentleman @sknob
Wondering what others may feel about the subject?
For myself I find the deeper I think about them the 'worse they get'... this morning's thought was that they seemed like a way of supposedly describing music without actually describing it at all... to paraphrase my friend's child who can't yet phrase "I don't like"...
I've thought about video game genres a lot; I'm always trying to determine what makes something a "shooter" or a "racer". It beguiles me when our names for things don't always correctly describe the gameplay. When does a "shoot em up" become a "beat em up"?
If you’re based in #Canberra and interested in portrayals of #science in different #genres and times, the NFSA’s “Science. Art. Film.” nights are back for 2024!! 🤩🤩 The series is hosted by Dr Anna-Sophie Jürgens, who brings so much enthusiasm and knowledge to these events. And the guest panellists are always incredible, as are the #movies chosen 🎥🍿 It’s also FREE! The first one is on Feb 28th and screening Spielberg’s #Jaws 🦈🛥️
#CfP for the GSA (#TheGSA) Panel 2024: "Politics of Form. Ambiguity and Dynamism in #Literary#Genres", which will take place on September 26-29, 2024 in Atlanta.
🤣 I went hunting for a big "map of music genres" and landed on https://everynoise.com -- which, awesome. I know I've seen that site before, but I had forgotten about it.
I type in a band, to see what genre it thinks they are. I went with The Flavor Crystals, a local #Minneapolis band. Everynoise classifies them as Psych-Gaze -- sure, that sounds reasonable.
I click through to psych-gaze to see what bands it puts on their suggested genre playlist... yep, a quick scan reveals a lot of bands I'd mostly agree with.
But then Everynoise has these filters along the top for mainstream, deep, deeper, deepest ... which, I'm sure in some genres would maybe mean something, but given the starting point I'm working with, just makes me laugh.
