Funny, I posted this obscure music industry news paragraph from 1921 that I had come across in my research about New York klezmers and my friend Paul Gifford (expert on cimbaloms and Hungarian music among other things) sent me this photo of an earlier incarnation of this same band. He got the photo from the great-grandson of the cimbalom player Bela Nyary (1872-1923), who emigrated to the US from Hungary and worked on the vaudeville circuit. #FolkMusic#MusicHistory#klezmer#HungarianMusic
It’s usually sung as far too much of a dirge, if I could I’d have shared English Rebellion’s cheery rendition to The Rose Tree (with bits of other tunes like The Sloe mixed in) but it doesn’t seem to be online anywhere
Anniversary of the 1932 Kinder Scout mass trespass on Sunday 23 April so here's Commoners Choir with From Below. If you want more related folk songs then there's Manchester Rambler by Ewan MacColl, and the rearranged version by John Tams, and Trespassers by the Young'uns (on their album Tiny Notes on Bandcamp). And there's a short, song filled, documentary about the Kinder Scout trespass by the Young'uns with Boff Whalley on youtube. If you can't find links for any of these let me know and I'll post them.
For every footprint on the land,
For all the banners and the banned,
Should we keep to the landlord’s plans? Hell no!
‘Cos real change comes from below.
Sunday evening with Chris Foster’s arrangement of “The World Turned Upside Down“, from the album “All Things in Common”. One of my favourite performances of one of my favourite Leon Rosselson songs. Channeling Gerrard Winstanley and The Diggers. #nowPlaying#folkmusic#traditionalmusic#guitar
Heard that Péter Éri, longtime member of Muzsikás Folk Ensemble, passed away (1953-2023). For anyone interested in #Hungarian#FolkMusic and the #Táncház scene this group has been one of the most important forces for decades which influenced countless younger ensembles to learn and play folk music from #Transylvania and other regions. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lc5d-6hv9Xo
🎵 Well, I've made an album.🎶 It may not be much, but 'tis mine own. It has been a great journey: I wrote my first song, bought and learned a new instrument, collaborated on a song with a friend, made a set of bells. All fun stuff. Now I just hope for someone to play a track or two. 🎸 #FolkMusic#FolkSongs#folkie#guitar#mandolin
Monday morning. Clocking-in and spinning up some Fairport Convention for this frosty November start.
Funny how not too far from Jefferson Airplane this first record seems.
Today in Labor History September 4, 1970: Socialist Salvador Allende was elected President of Chile. As president, he tried to nationalize major industries, expand education and improve conditions for the working class. On September 11, 1973 (the other 9/11), he was ousted in a coup by Augusto Pinochet, leading to a dictatorship that lasted until 1990. Thousands of workers, socialists, union members and activists were killed, including folk singer Victor Jara, who continued to sing, as his torturers mashed his fingers and demanded that he play his guitar. The coup and dictatorship were supported by the CIA, and by President Nixon, and by the Secretary of State, Henry Kissinger, who later won the Nobel Peace Prize.
Cillian Murphy choosing Lisa O'Neill's Old Note on 6 & I'm crying in my car.
She is just astonishing. 😭❤️
She's playing #Belfast Empire in December and I couldn't get my ticket fast enough.
Last time I saw her I cried the whole way through so tissues at the ready! #LisaONeill#Irish#IrishMusic#FolkMusic#Banjo#Music
Lankum is an Irish folk group interpreting traditional songs through a dark postmodern lens. Not for the faint of heart, this relentlessly bleak album rarely lets in the light. If a doom metal band suddenly began interpreting Steeleye Span on a steady diet of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, it might come out sounding like Lankum’s foreboding, cinematic take on traditional folk. Find it on Bandcamp.
There’s an old joke in Scotland that the best Christmas songs are Songs of the Stone – about the recovery, on Christmas Day 1950, of Scotland’s Stone of Destiny from Westminster Abbey.
Let me share with you the story and some of these songs 🧵
As I've not really played it since getting my Serafini, I'm considering selling my Hohner Erika in G/C.
It's a Mike Rowbotham special, which he set up for me in 2017, and added a third (lower) voice and an extra four bass/chord buttons to give 12. If I let it go I'll be looking for £1,000. Delivery possible within a reasonable distance of Bedford, UK, or postage within the UK at buyers cost. More details in the next post.
This recording is going along swimmingly! Just back from a break to walk the dog. I'm getting the hang of the basics of Reaper on Linux.
Once I get going, the workflow is soooo much nicer than audacity or ,dare I say, my trusty old 4-track. Certainly wouldn't have the flexibility to double mic everything and balance condenser with dynamic everywhere!
Time to start paying attention to all those free VST posts in my timeline I guess!
