"...researchers modeled the health consequences for residents in a two-day, citywide blackout during a heat wave, with electricity gradually restored over the next three days.
The results were shocking: in Phoenix, about 800,000 people — roughly half the population — would need emergency medical treatment for heat stroke and other illnesses. The flood of people seeking care would overwhelm the city’s hospitals. More than 13,000 people would die." #heatwave#disasters#climateemergency#ac#power#heatstroke
"First, as air is caught by the opening of a wind catcher, it is funneled down to the dwelling below, depositing any sand or debris at the foot of the tower. Then the air flows throughout the interior of the building, sometimes over subterranean pools of water for further cooling. Eventually, warmed air will rise and leave the building through another tower or opening, aided by the pressure within the building." #persian#AC#windcatcher#bâdgir

News / Pretendo Network: You can now StreetPass your 3DS friends from anywhere in the world!
Have you had trouble finding anyone to #StreetPass for Happy Home Showcase in New Leaf?
If you have, the team at @pretendo have just made it easier! With the latest version of Nimbus (which allows you to connect to the network), you're now able to StreetPass people online from anywhere in the world!
However, it's not that simple. Due to the buggy implementation of StreetPass for some games, you'll only be able to StreetPass people you've friended on your console (well that's 0 for me). It makes use of a feature called StreetPass Relay which was used at Nintendo Zones which allowed you to upload your data and download others.
I think I'll just stick to real StreetPasses for now though (I got 3 in the last year). Anyone reading from the South West or West Midlands?
@sebsauvage @sossalemaire
dmesg | grep -i "error|warn|fail"
Pas mal d'erreur ACPI (le bug tracker des kernels 5.15 en parle beaucoup). Mais tout fonctionne...

Just want to end this post with a thank you to everyone supporting this account. This post is currently being scheduled a few weeks in advance (today's the 25th of April), but right now, I may possibly be preparing for GCSE exams since they start this week for me on Thursday. Seriously, thank you.
News / StreetPass: Modders have gotten StreetPass to go online!
If you're a #Nintendo3DS owner, you might be pleased to hear that modders have made an online version of #StreetPass called NetPass, which allows you to StreetPass users on your 3DS.
It's great if you're struggling to find people, although I have thankfully had some StreetPasses with 3 people in the last year, 2 of which gave me Animal Crossing New Leaf data!
Last week I participated @W3.org (@w3c) #W3CAC (W3C Advisory Committee¹), #W3CAB (W3C Advisory Board²@ab), and #W3CBoard (Board of the W3C Corporation³) meetings in Hiroshima, Japan.
The AC (Advisory Committee) meeting was two days, followed by two days of AB and Board meetings which started with a half-day joint session (including the #w3CTAG), then separate meetings to focus on their own tasks & discussions.
The W3C Process⁴ describes the twice a year AC (Advisory Committee) Meetings⁵. In addition to members of the AC (one primary and one alternate per W3C Member Organization), the meetings are open to the AB (Advisory Board), the W3C Board, the W3C TAG (W3C Technical Architecture Group⁶@tag), Working Group⁷ chairs, Chapter⁸ staff, and this time also a W3C Invited Expert designated observer⁹.
The AC currently meets in the Spring on its own and a shorter meeting in the Fall as part of the annual #W3CTPAC (W3C Technical Plenary and Advisory Committee¹⁰ meetings). The existence, dates, and location of the event are public¹¹, however the agenda, minutes, and registrants are generally Member-confidential. Since those individual links have their own access controls, I collected them on a publicly-viewable wiki page for easier discovery & navigation (if you work for a W3C Member Organization¹²):
Most of the W3C meeting materials and discussions were also W3C Member-confidential, however many of the presentations are publicly viewable, and a few more may be shared publicly after the fact.
Myself and others at #W3C who believe in pushing for more openness and transparency in standards work, even (or especially) governance of said work, will be doing our best to work with others at W3C to continue shifting our work accordingly.
Aside: I started the #OpenAB project when I was first elected to the AB (Advisory Board) in 2013, documenting it on the publicly viewable W3C Wiki, and updated it with the help of others since: https://www.w3.org/wiki/AB#Open_AB
Like most conferences, I got as much out of side conversations at breaks (AKA hallway track¹³) and meals as I did from scheduled talks and panels.
For now, here are the events, slides, and videos which are publicly viewable that provide an interesting glimpse into some of the topics discussed:
🖼 slides: https://w3c.github.io/adapt/presentations/ac2024/ Warning: the proposed use of .well-known therein is IMO a bad mistake. Unnecessary reinvention (most handled by existing rel values¹⁴), more complex to author (requires sidefiles¹⁵), harder to publish (requires site admin root access), likely to become inaccurate (Ruby’s postulate¹⁶), and fragile (site admins frequently break .well-known for individual pages). A full critique likely requires its own blog post.
News / Weekly Event Outlook: Events in the Animal Crossing World taking place on 2024 Week 16
Sorry that I missed posting last week, I think I was a bit unorganized 😥. Pretty empty week unfortunately so just listen to a bunch of villager birthdays 😂.
Here's what's happening in the Animal Crossing world this week!
News / Nintendo Network Shutdown: Online services for the Wii U and 3DS has shut down
The time is up for online services for the #WiiU and #3DS consoles.
It is now April 9th at 1am BST, which means online services for both consoles are no longer available. This means you will be no longer able to splat anymore squids, challenge anyone to a Mario Kart race or even try to show off your bowling skills on official Nintendo servers on the #NintendoWiiU or #Nintendo3DS consoles.
To continue playing online services on both consoles, you will need to mod your consoles. Guides to do that are available on https://wiiu.hacks.guide and https://3ds.hacks.guide. After that, install @pretendo and follow the brilliant guides for installation for Wii U or 3DS. They cover everything you need to know about modding your console and getting Pretendo set up (I've helped add some commits to the Pretendo guide to make it easier to get started).
News / Events: April Fools Day is happening on Monday
Ready to get pranked?
Whether you're running into Blanka on the final days of Tortimer Island online or you're visiting Tortimer at the plaza, April Fools Day is happening on Monday!
Might go and experience it myself for the first time as well as exploring the last days on the island.
News / Nintendo Network Shutdown: Contribute SpotPass data now!
If you're familiar with the #WiiU and #3DS, you may know that SpotPass is one of the key components of the online services (particularly back when both consoles were still actively supported).
SpotPass will cease to exist once Nintendo Network shuts down and revival services such as @pretendo will need SpotPass data for some online services to function properly. Right now, data for SpotPass can be insufficient in places and in order to make sure it still works properly, they need your dumps.
If you have a unmodded/modded Wii U console or a modded 2DS/3DS console, please visit https://spotpassarchive.github.io/ to learn how to dump your data now. It's quick and easy to do and it won't take long. I did it personally myself last night
News / Sales: Animal Crossing New Horizons is discounted to £33.29 in Europe!
Just to let you all know, Nintendo has another sale going on in Europe. If you'd like to pick up New Horizons for the first time, it'll be discounted to £33.29 until April 7th!
I could be wrong but it looks like one of the first times that the Happy Home Paradise DLC is being discounted too, being reduced to £15.74.
