So you've joined Mark Zuckerberg's new app that uploads your entire phone. That's cool. Have fun.
You may have heard of Mastodon. We are something different. A little more complicated and a lot more egalitarian. No billionaires sucking up your financial and health info here. Just good honest friendly human engagement.
If you grow tired of vacuous celebrity posters, and algorithm selected content, give https://spreadmastodon.org/ a try.
@mastodonmigration are you sure you want to describe mastodon as complicated in the same sentence where you use a six syllable word to describe its merits?
@mastodonmigration Given Spread Mastodon just takes everyone to m.s, is that a great resource for newbies? If it actually spread load across multiple servers it'd be worth endorsing but AFAIK it's in the "Might come soon" bucket?
@wild1145 Certainly it is not a perfect solution, and it would be better to spread new users out across multiple instances. Spread Mastodon is an effort to simplify the process for new users that are turned off by the complexity of instance selection, so it is appropriate for this purpose. Also support initiatives to encourage new users on mastodon.social to set up accounts on other instances like this post: https://mastodon.online/@mastodonmigration/110647058090180531
@mastodonmigration I don't disagree it's better in some ways, but given one of the biggest hurdles I've anecdotally read from people that joined this instance and then left was the lack of post and account portability.
I'd be concerned more people will go to m.s, get told they're evil for doing so, and then get told to go fuck themselves because to move it looses all of their historic interactions.
I hope spread mastodon will add more instances soon, but until it's there it's hard to support
@wild1145 Certainly understand and sympathize with your opinion. Was trying to condense the invitation to a single post and this seemed the best way to do it, but encourage people to explain the entire #Fediverse value proposition to #Threads users too. And it's not just #Mastodon either. Lots of cool alternatives like #Calckey#Plemora and #Pixelfed. Problem is not wanting to overwhelm people who are already leery of complexity with too much information.
@mastodonmigration@wild1145 Im with Ryan on this. Signing posting only to M.S is the same thing the Mastodon app does anyway and its become quite a place for spam and adult content. Not exactly what I had in mind for Mastodon users.and I decided to start my own anyway which far more Mastodon in itself in terms of user experience than M.S/.O
@Whiskeyomega@wild1145 No disagreement with you and Ryan on this generally. Huge advocate for migration to smaller and medium size instances, as well as individual instances like yours. For this type of purpose it seems like M.S. can be thought of as a "newbie island" where people show up to get a first taste of Mastodon before branching out. Of course, many don't branch out, and that is unfortunate, but the hope is that they do once they become familiar with their options.
@mastodonmigration@wild1145 Or the other thing that happens is people think they're joining Mastodon as a whole thing when they're joining M.S see how rough if it is and never go on again . Most people dont know what migration is on Mastodon id say.
@Whiskeyomega@wild1145 Yup. It is certainly a problem. Not sure how to address it in a short succinct way when approaching new user prospects. Suggestions are welcome.
@mastodonmigration@wild1145 give the users that come in via spread mastodon the choice of servers. I get there are what I call Wasteland servers but there are the good few that are well looked after who would not only welcome new users but also help new users with a better experience on the first place. My #Cupofteasocial or Ryan's Mastodonapp.uk or Universedon or vmst.io or publicsqaure.global or raphus.social. We all share the same mentality in giving our users the best possible experience for our users
@mastodonmigration I'm curious-- what's the latest on (easy) account portability, including followers and posts? Do you know if or when it's coming? That would lessen any negative effects of directing all newcomers to m.s . Onboarding could be "join at m.s, then explore the fediverse and migrate to an instance you like."
