Yesterday Justin Trudeau revealed that agents of the Indian government murdered a Canadian citizen on Canadian soil. When Canadian Sikhs went to post about it on Facebook, the platform removed their posts as a violation of Indian law.

@parismarx that's because Facebook is just a #fascism enabling #corporation, with the purpose of monetizing suffering by preventing authentic communication and enabling #capitalism
#FuckFacebook
#FuckOffCapitalists
The only #threads worth having are the ones in the form of a long #anti-capitalist rant. :)

@parismarx Misleading headline. Further down, the article says that after review the pages were restored. I am not a fan either of Facebook (cancelled my account years ago) or the current gov't in India; but misleading headlines are . . . misleading.

@parismarx @Alon Twitter somehow figured out — a decade ago — how to withhold content only in a single country.

(Of course; that was to let Nazis be Nazis except in Germany but… the solution was correct)

BibbleCo,

@parismarx wait til the UK gov starts exercising the new powers it's just got to control all social media and messaging systems (including email)! (In case you hadn't heard, E2E encryption's illegal in the UK now, because children.)

@parismarx Are we going to get Musk and Zuckerberg in the Octagon or what?

Let’s make it WWF style and throw some weapons in the ring as well.

freeagent,
@freeagent@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@parismarx It’s crazy that Facebook was censoring Canadian users posting from Canada because the government of India didn’t like their content. I’m glad this made the news and Facebook reversed their poor decision. It would be nice if Facebook just did the right thing up front and it didn’t take media attention to force the issue.

@parismarx Sanctions against Modi and Bharatiya Janshakti Party. Religio-fascists to the extreme

surendrajat,
@surendrajat@fosstodon.org avatar

@nilsskirnir @parismarx lol even opposition has same stance on this issue. So essentially you're asking for sanction against a country which the west is hard at work in keeping close. It's tough.

nilsskirnir, (edited )
@nilsskirnir@kolektiva.social avatar

@surendrajat @parismarx Yeah I know, but we sanctioned others for much less. In fact we’ve bombed and engineered coups in places for much, much less. But US has never been shy about sucking up to autocrats. Realpolitiks have no morals

surendrajat,
@surendrajat@fosstodon.org avatar

@nilsskirnir @parismarx Not India. It has and will get away with bigger things than this. And it's quite interesting because the same US n allies who started this whole extrajudicial killings of the terrorists in the first place sanction others when it comes back home after repeated requests of extraditions.

nilsskirnir,
@nilsskirnir@kolektiva.social avatar

@surendrajat @parismarx I agree. US has been biggest global aggressor in past 40 years. India will get the same treatment as China, which is use it as a market and cheap labor source until India gets too wealthy and becomes a threat. Unless, of course, India follows the Japanese path and becomes another member of US empire and de facto colony.

surendrajat,
@surendrajat@fosstodon.org avatar

@nilsskirnir @parismarx Yeah that's more or less what US empire expects from India. But I think US/west lost its chances by making all the wrong moves long ago, and Indians realize it very well. Heck, the MEA calls out west's blunders on every platform he gets a chance and tells why Russia is a friend. I think India's going to be a cautiously optimistic partner at best for a long term.

If you can't hide the truth of an assassination in an effort to make more money then it means capitalism would die on the vine. Surely, the people of Planet Earth understand and will graciously accept that, right?

grey_beard,

@parismarx In Canada the company you mentioned is now called “faceblock”.
Apparently faceblock can’t afford to pay news content creators a fair share of their pittance earnings. Even links to other news sites are blocked from being posted.
What a shameful act. 😪 😪 😪
Oh well.

@parismarx It is outrageous. When fires were ravaging my city (Kelowna), Facebook would not publish posts stating which neighbourhoods were on evacuation alert and order. It was absolutely dangerous.

Meanwhile on Twitter it's all about how he "wasn't a Canadian citizen"...like that somehow excuses foreign intelligence agencies from wacking people on our fucking soil.

Jesus, I fucking despise these tech billionaire MFers.

Rocko_McDagger,

@parismarx You know what the worst part is? This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to horrible stuff done by the Indian government.

@parismarx Can anyone clarify who was assassinated? Was he involved in the assassination of Indira Gandhi? That wouldn't change the fact that India violated international law.

jonahbk,

@parismarx technofascism is going strong. Tech billionaires now are doing their own foreign policy, look at Musk disabling Starlink for Ukraine and Zuck enforcing Indian laws over Canadians' internet posts on an American website .
