@whknott the great general had fought for a thousand years, defending the Ton-su confederacy. Finally the fragile peace looked stable enough for the thoughts of one of natures greatest soldiers to turn to retirement, and a long delayed marriage. A few gently pulled strings had the General’s betrothed, recently promoted to Lieutenant (for the fourth time, /not/ exactly one of natures greatest soldiers) reassigned to the homeworld, where he too could cash out and reunite with the General.

Their castle in the sky was perfect, along with the planet they received for their upcoming marriage. His hair was perfect. Her dress was perfect. His military medals were faked for his royal status (he didn't earn them). Her lineage was impeccable and included records of DNA enhancements. Together they made a flawless couple. It would have been a glorious union had she liked him even a little, but she didn't. That's why she had her little grey, horned monster sneak up on them and rip his spine out.

@whknott On the 30th occlusion of the Great Moon of planet Pek, Prince Cal-en, ruler of the floating kingdom of Granai, in keeping with centuries-old tradition, arrived at Pek as part of its celebration of a Granai prince choosing a mate.
But this was no ordinary mate, in the past always chosen from among many princesses of Granai. This was a daughter of Pek, her father a well-known starship builder. Reactions were swift.

Why would the heir to a thousand systems wed the heir to one?
Living so close to the event horizon gives us unique opportunities. Everyone on Syggax grows up understanding spacetime intuitively. Elementary school children perform relativity experiments. Inventors tinker with it and make discoveries in their workshops. Entire industries use its effects.
