potus,

I just imposed a series of tariffs on goods made in China:

25% on steel and aluminum,
50% on semiconductors,
100% on EVs,
And 50% on solar panels.

China is determined to dominate these industries.

I'm determined to ensure America leads the world in them.

@potus Cool, I'll never get an affordable EV this way!

@virtualbri @potus incredibly short-sighted. If the cars pass all the safety requirements I don't see why they couldn't compete here. It's going back to when they tried to stop early Japanese imports.

@troy @potus Yep. We'll be bailing out the auto industry for what, the 3rd time, any moment now?

@virtualbri @troy @potus
Joe Biden ran as a union president and he would hardly be that if he didn't try to protect over a million union jobs that China is trying to take away from us.

Of course China's EVs are cheaper since they can use slave labor and have no significant effective environmental regulations.

@GreenFire @troy @potus If the administration was really interested in that, they'd be preventing all the factories in Mexico, including BYD and Tesla, who are building there.

And in the mean time, the US car industry after making EVs most of us can't afford is wondering why sales are dipping, and instead of making those cars, is pulling back. They'll be blaming US regulations and Union workers next.

I don't know that tariffs ever actually work, except to burn the consumer.

@virtualbri @potus I don't think we want what China was gonna dominate the US with, wouldn't be worth the cost of losing domestic automakers making EVs, hopefully this way they can figure out how to make them affordable themselves. Really hard to compete with Chinese government basically subsidizing the major cost of the vehicles.

@monorailtimes

I agree that the subsidies are terrible.

It's just they're subsidizing Chinese companies working with European auto manufacturers and we're fine with that, they're subsidizing parts makers for US manufacturers and we're fine with that, all because that helps the profits of those car companies.

But then for this instance because it's not helping the profits of those same companies we're against it. It's not about the workers, not about the environment, just who profits.

@monorailtimes I just want to see a strategy that actually helps consumers and workers in the long run, and tariffs never seem like they are.

@potus Do the tariffs go to workers? If not, you've injured the American worker and enriched Billionaires while hurting International relations.

(Yes, I know that Threads won't show whoever runs the potus account this reply.)
